Headlight options

Recommended Posts

I know that a lot of people dislike this style of headlights cause it's headed torwards the "brodozer" style but whatever. Would these work? Are they street legal? Anybody have any pics of their rigs wth them? Thanks

i know youre not asking for other peoples set up but ill tell you what ive had and how well it works...

FIRST, like everyone will say, upgrade your wiring harness to a putco or equivalent

http://www.amazon.com/Putco-230004HW-Premium-Automotive-Lighting/dp/B001P29X4G

then i got the Delta H4 housings. good cut off, good lenses.

and then ive got these bulbs...

Indiana, or where i am in Indiana, doesnt really care about "legal" lights. these probably arent legal in WA

theyre 130watt offroad motorcycle bulbs...

Have to ask first - what are you trying to accomplish?  Is it that you want to have some "special" or "cool" headlights so you can be seen when you drive down to the malt shop?

Or are you trying to get better vision on the road at night?

If you want better vision - then do the harness upgrade first.  Then do some research on lights with a better light pattern than the stock sealed beam.  There are lots of them, from brighter sealed beams like Silverstars to the latest LED headlights like the Truck Lite or GE Nighthawk LED headlights that Don has (http://comancheclub.com/topic/46238-ge-nighthawk-led-headlamp-eval/)

Thanks. And so far in the year I've been driving, WA seems pretty chill about car stuff. Haha but I guess I haven't been around for long enough to tell for sure

quick question, have you done the harness upgrade yet?

No, I haven't. What's better about it? Never even heard about it

it plugs right in and puts the power through relays instead of through your switch.

The only downside to the Putco harness is that it uses a non-standard relay, so if they go bad you can't just grab a new one from the auto parts store.  I Swapped out those relays out for some off the shelf units from NAPA and extended said wires to locate the relays along my fender behind the battery.

The advantage of the relay harness is the bulbs will see near to 14V at the bulb. Before I installed mine I checked my bulb voltage, and it was just a hair above 11 volts.  The wiring for the stock headlights travels a long distance through thing wire to the siwtch, the switch takes the full brunt of said circuit power, and then travels all the way back to the front of the truck.  The relay setup uses that circuit to simply trigger relays, and the power to the lights is supplied right off the battery through thicker wire, which means it sees full charge voltage.  That increase in voltage means more power is actually going through the element, and thus making them brighter.  Quite a bit brighter too.  It's probably one of the best upgrades you can do for both lighting, and taking stress off the headlight switch and circuit, which is known to short, melt, or burn out.

As far as housings, I have Rampage clear (euro style) headlights that have a glass lens and aluminum body and use H4 replacement bulbs.  I love my setup, has a good light spread and distance and much brighter.  These are the ones I have. http://www.quadratec.com/products/97009_501_07.htm

Another good option is E-code spec lights, which I think are the same or similar to the Delta lights listed above. They are designed to spread light laterally and have a nice cutoff to them (as do my rampage lights).

They must have changed that aspect of it, because when I bought mine it used some strange non-standard relay.  Either that, or they just didn't sell that style around me.  In any case, that's cool, less things to deal with.

The Putco uses a standard relay, just not the standard Bosche style 5 pin relay. They use a Honda style relay.

What's a Honda style automotive relay? Got any specs?

4 pins. It's also used on some American stuff. BW4136.

Yes, I know it's a cheap 4-pin low amp NC (Normally Closed) relay. The standard Bosch automotive relay is rated at 30 amps, was curious what these things were rated at. Probably 20A max..........

I pulled mine out of a random Honda at the JY. They are used for headlight relays and other loads similar to the Bosch units. Seems to work fine.

Pick your poison really, I found it odd the Putco uses the different relays ... But not a problem really.

When I did the other vehicle I used a generic eBay version that used Bosch style relays and had ceramic plugs.

Haven't noticed any difference between the two ... They both solve the Jeep lighting issue.

And really, given that legal wattage headlights should only draw ~6A on high beam ....

What's a "legal wattage"? The Manitoba Highway Traffic Act only specifies a minimum illumination distance (110m for high and 30m for low iirc) and that the low beams have to be aimed so they don't blind oncoming drivers. I assume it's similar in other jurisdictions.

i have same lights but i went octane lighting to get them 50 bucks for the set with blue leds, they work well good low and high beam spread change the bulbs out the cheap ones they come with suck . also go with the harness set up first like everyone has said , on mine i wired up the leds to there own harness and seperate fuseblock and switch on the dash so i could turn them on or off . oh and before i forget you'll have to trim the headlight bezel about 1/16 all the way around and you'll have to cut the headlight bucket wings off for them to fit good. overall i'm happy with them hope that helps .
