Front hood support struts.. Anyone done this?

Recommended Posts

Good morning.

Did a couple of searches and am wondering if I have a virus or something because this isn't the only site that my searches

end up saying "NOTHING FOUND" try again..

SO, has anyone found a way to utilize another vehicle's hood support struts to get away from always using the support rod.

thanks E

you can piece the ebay kit together yourself (shocks and ball mounts) for like $40. same shocks and mounts.

Holy crap hornbrod your truck is clean. You ever drive it?

The $69 Redline kit is $116 after shipping and conversion to CAD $. I'll try to buy the parts locally, does anyone know the length of the strut rods compressed and extended? I will check Princess Auto next time I'm there, I can probably get it all under $50. Also is there a way to tell if the strut is too firm?

I guess long term I could just wait for some liftgate struts to show up at the junkyard.

   Yep. Most every day.

Not a big deal, but a local guy purchased the Ebay kit to save a couple of bucks, and when you pop the hood safety latch, the hood flies up and slams to the strut stops unless you hold the hood with your hand on the way up. The Redline struts go up by themselves about 3/4 of the way, then are damped to finish slowly.

I used my old 00 XJ's worn out hatch struts when I did mine. $5 for a set of ball mounts from an RV shop and some generic tech screws I had kicking about. The late model struts have the lower bracket as part of the Assembly.

Plan to do the same again with the MJ shortly.

Why do it? Why not? I had the struts and being my XJ sits on 35's and a roughly 5.5-6ish inch lift it makes things easier. And I liked the idea, YMMV.

I just tossed a bunch of those struts and mounts at work. I didnt even think about using them for that. Any idea what pressure the struts are rated for? I had 30 and 40lb ones.

Redline kit:

How is the clearance with the Cowl Hood? that's the only thing stopping me from this Mod but now that I see it on yours although it looks tight I may have to reconsider this mod...

If possible can you snap some more pics from the other side..

Thanks in advance...

The right wiper arm doesn't clear the cowl hood lip with either the old prop rod or the struts. I just keep the wiper arm off and in the cab all the time unless it rains then I stick it back on. I've grown used to it and it's worth it to be able to open the hood all the way. .

Make sure none of the search filters are highlighted on the left side of the search page,

if I search "Items I participated in" it stays highlighted and only searches those items until I click that filter again, eliminating it.

"filters"?? I just type in the little box in the upper right corner.. NO filters that I see.

I'm on several sites that ask for all sorts of parameters and get the same results.   NUTTIN.  Then, I just google it and get tons of hits from that very site.. don't' understand it.

Thanks guys for all the info. Looks like there are a lot of peeps that would do it. (THAT'S WHY I MADE IT IN THE DIY SECTION)

It SHOULD be in there.

The problem that I find down here is in the hot summer months, I think that they overheat and start leaking. And in the colder climates, (below zero) they pull up on the hatches and by spring their shot and don't hold)

I've never seen Cherokee struts down here in yards that are still worth pulling for those reasons.

Thanks again guys.

The search I use the most is to click "view new content"

on the page it opens you'll see "by content type" on the left.

If you had clicked one of those filters in the past, but never unclicked it,

it is still used to screen the results.

I know that has limited my results in the past.

When you open the search page just check to see if anything on the left side of the results page is highlighted.

That was the problem I was having.

That's what I thought by the picture but was hoping I was wrong... I leave my wiper on all the time and usually opening it to the first notch is plenty for me so no prop rods for me...

Thanks for the info..

A better way to search any site: Use the GOogles!

Just do a regular google search, but include the search term site:comancheclub.com (or whatever site you want to search... eg site:wikipedia.org).

This forum's built-in search function is alright, but it's not amazing. It doesn't do short words, and it often leaves me frustrated. Google, on the other hand, couldn't have gotten to where they are with a crappy search engine. Bear in mind when trying to search other sites/forums that some don't allow Google to index them, so this trick doesn't work with ALL websites, only most.
