Just curious about if they do anything crazy for the holidays. This year was the first year I ever really started relying on them for parts, and I have a fair amount of stuff in the cart for one of the MJ's. Wondering if it would pay off to wait a week or two.

I have the normal 5% off like you can always find, but wanted to see if there is something worth holding out for.

Thanks,

Rob

I would say wait and see if they offer something better than usual. They might discount certain parts rather that a % off coupon. But if you need the MJ ASAP I would just use the discount you have.

But seeing as I am broke from my gear replacement, all I can do is look through their catalog thinking "I really wish I could afford those rear shocks"...

Usually cyber monday is when the internet gives good deals. But hey they could do friday too. Usually a discount and shipping is reduced or free.

I have found them to be high on shipping. If they would ever put on free shipping I'd be on that like stink on S$*&.

What gets me is they ship from multiple locations and charge you full price shipping from each one, this is why I don't purchase from them very often.

Now that I've moved to a city (Missoula MT, Bachelors program, GO GRIZ!) the parts store is down the street and I don't have much reason to buy parts mail order any more.

I'm curious too.  I also have a list of things I need from Summit Racing that I'm a little hesitant to pull the trigger on right this second.

You have a point Cheyenne I have noticed this also.

Was on Facebook today when Rockauto announced they would be closed for the holiday, so I asked if they do any sales... This was the response:

Instead of running specials or sales, RockAuto prefers to offer parts at our lowest available everyday prices. The prices shown in the catalog reflect the lowest prices that we are able to offer at that time.

So, if you have anything waiting. Go ahead and order it. As soon as my drums are back in stock, I'll be all over it.

I've been round with them on the shipping and tax.  Do you notice that they tax the shipping?  Well the law says that they can only tax the shipping if the shipping charge is exactly what they pay or less!  Their response is that sometimes it's more and sometimes it's less.  So I say, then you'd have to go through the nightmare of figuring out which which ones you can tax and which you can't, wouldn't you?  That's when they stopped responding.  Is there a class action suit there?

Speaking (or writing) as a CPA with knowledge of taxes, I can say that for some states (MD, for example) charge sales tax on "Shipping and Handling."  The reasons for this is beyond the scope of my reply.  If the charges are reported separately, i.e. "shipping" and "handling" then only "handling" is subject to sales tax.  Different states may/will treat the two services as one or not tax them at all.

Because of the recent Supreme Court ruling (Wayfair), most on-line retailers have to charge sales tax on all sales to customer in states that charge sales tax.  Given the complexity of sales tax rules (48 states charge sales tax, within states local sales tax rules apply, and different items can be taxed at different rates, etc.), Rockauto may take a simple rule of charging sales tax on all applicable sales and items.

Most states will not charge sales tax to a reseller of parts - auto repairs shops and other retailers.

I don't know where you live and what the sales tax rules in your state may be.  If you believe you are getting charged sales tax incorrectly, do you own research on your state's tax department website.  Do your own research, don't just tell RA that they're wrong.  Remember, they have high priced lawyers and accountants to help them.

If your research proves you are correct, then write (do not email) to RA and present your argument and evidence.  If that does not satisfy you, shop somewhere else.

Getting a refund? Fat chance.

I just hit the button on a large Rockauto purchase for my MJ D44 build (mostly replacement brake stuff).  I always shop around, check ebay, amazon, RA, and local prices.  I"ve found that RA always has a 5% off coupon available, and I've never known them to do other sales.  Also seems you can usually find single items cheaper somewhere else.  But when you have a large order with multiple parts, and all the parts come from the same shipping location, RA can be the  best deal.
