What Minuit knows about stock Jeep radios
Minuit replied to Minuit's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
It won't, and it also won't come with the right bracket to mount it in your truck. That isn't really a Jeep radio, it's out of a Mitsubishi vehicle. Here is an eBay search that covers the Chrysler years by part number. This one won't catch them all, but will catch most. Any of these will be a direct fit for an 88 or newer MJ. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=(56002467%2C56009004%2C56007214%2C56009001%2C56007519)+-avs+-ventvisor+-ventshade&_osacat=6000&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=(56002467%2C56009004%2C56007214%2C56009001%2C56007519)+-avs+-ventvisor+-ventshade&_sacat=6000 -
Like 97.5% of aftermarket things the Crown antennas are spotty at best. My first one extended once and got stuck. I held my nose and accepted a free replacement which works at this very moment. Noisy little bastard though. Hopefully it'll hang on long enough for me to find an OEM one. It does provide good radio reception though.

56003151 is the part number.

What Minuit knows about stock Jeep radios

New arrival - they're getting few and far between, these days. Plenty of radios pass through my hands but usually they're rather quickly directed into the hands of someone else. Plus, you'd get awfully bored if I posted 7 pictures in a row of Chrysler AM-FMs. Here's something a little different for you: The family resemblance with mid '90s Mitsubishi tape decks is extremely clear. It also doesn't take the standard Jeep/AMC radio brackets. I don't know anything else, not even a part number, so I made up a story for it: I assume that this at some point was offered in the Jeep accessory catalog, perhaps in case you ordered a new Jeep without a radio and changed your mind later on. I haven't done anything stupid recently, so I decided to stick a tape into it. It sounded fine for about 30 seconds, and then I assume the belt broke and it ate ZZ Top's Recycler. You win this round, radio. Judging by the wear to the tape door, this thing's seen a fair bit of use. -
Limit switches inside the antenna.

To be honest, I'm really not sure. I'd have to study it some more to figure out what's actually going on. If I had to guess I'd say the relay is reversing the polarity.

Me! Me! I did it! I swapped all of the stock wiring in, even down to the fuse terminal on the fusebox My FM reception is considerably better than it was with the original fixed antenna. I don't know how the aftermarket ones work, this is how the stock one is though. The factory power antenna wiring is as simple as it gets. 6 wires and a relay. You only need to worry about three - "105" "P1" and "99" 99 goes to ground. 105 goes to battery positive. P1 goes to the radio - on the stock radios, this is hot when the radio is on. The other wires are part of the OEM antenna assembly, no idea about the aftermarket ones. I don't know if the relay is available new. It's mounted under the dash on the right side. Any XJ with the "Accusound by Jensen" package ought to have it hanging out in there. Another way to tell is the nut on the fender - it kind of looks like a castle nut: Other than that, it mounts under the inner fender with this bracket: The mounting points for the antenna bracket inside the fender should be there already.

Driveway Ornament To Daily Driver: 7 Years!

Here's a thought that just popped into my mind. Now that I have brand new carpet, I suddenly care a lot about keeping it clean. Why the HELL do the factory slush mats have a cut-out right next to the brake pedal? That's where your left foot goes! That little oversight completely defeats the purpose of them, and ruins them in my opinion. You can kinda see what I'm talking about in this very old pic: Seriously, what the hell were they thinking? As a "detail" guy this stuff pisses me off... did nobody think about someone resting their muddy foot next to the brake pedal and messing up the carpet? Are you just supposed to sit in the truck like it's a chair? Naturally, once I realized this they got replaced with a pair of junkyard factory XJ floor mats at $1.35 per. Sorry aftermarket, I'm not spending $70 for reproduction floor mats that are gonna get dirty the first time I drive the truck. The downside is that I had to spend almost an hour each in the shower brushing them out and spraying them with undiluted degreaser to get them anywhere near acceptable. They aren't perfect... ...but they protect the carpet. I also put my amp back in. Remember how short the input harness was? That severely limited where I could put the amp. I made it longer. A lot longer. In fact, I may have overcompensated a bit. So I could put the amp here: Please don't try to steal it armed with this new information, thanks. Yes, it's wearing the wiper intermittent box like a hat. As an added bonus, I don't have to take the cluster out to make adjustments. That got old. "But Minuit," you may ask, "It's 12:23 AM. Why are you posting pictures of floor mats in your stupid blog about your stupid truck?" I don't know either. -

The tape on those seals is some serious stuff -

Thanks! Those things go by a few names. Rocker seal, door to rocker seal, lower door weatherstrip are a few of the ones I've seen. They help a little with sealing up the door gap. I noticed a worthwhile difference in road noise when I installed them. The part number I ordered was 55134856. You'll need two and they aren't side specific. I think I bought the last pair for sale on eBay though. It took me a WHILE to find them! You can also find them on older, high trim XJs. The early versions are riveted to the lower seam, mine are held on with 3M double sided adhesive. Here is a link to more info. -
GOOD TO KNOW! I was going to take the tailhousing out this weekend. Was dreading that...

Driveway Ornament To Daily Driver: 7 Years!

madog7200 came over and we played around with radios for most of Saturday, so that got me motivated to work on stuff on my long weekend. First on the list was getting the radio antenna connected. You wouldn't think these two connectors would plug into eachother.... But they do! Kinda embarrassed I didn't try that out for so long... The power antenna rocks. FM stations from Nashville (50 miles from where I'm at) come in crystal clear! I can ALMOST hear Cookeville (120 miles away from Columbia) stations. I can even pick up a bunch of AM stations, although the radio still won't seek on them. Aux input still works great without messing with the AM reception even with the antenna plugged in, because the 56002467 is the best radio. I still haven't worked up the courage to take a Dremel to my new dash to sort out the bezel situation. This crusty one with the hole cut out of it will have to do for just a little bit longer. I've been thinking about dropping the rear an inch or so, so I put a bunch of crap in the bed until I got the stance I wanted... That's about an inch lower than current in the rear. About 250 pounds of stuff, if I were going to guess. I'd rather lower the rear than lift the front. I like the front stance it has now, and I really don't want to screw with my front geometry. I screwed up the alignment a couple of weeks ago when I installed a new tie rod end and RuffStuff's The Cure, so I 3/4 assed an alignment... with math! And strings tied to jack stands! This video explains the procedure: Here's what I got: String alignments on this suspension aren't as intuitive as they would be on an IFS vehicle, because the toe adjustments are connected to each other. Still, just takes some trial and error if you're doing it by tape measure. As you see I got it to 1/8"(toe in) on the left and 1/16 on the right. After straightening the steering wheel with this new setting, it drives great. Not a permanent solution, but much better than it was. I also washed and waxed the truck, and shined up the tires. Man, this paint sure isn't what it used to be. The clearcoat is failing in spots all over now. I suppose 26 years is a good run for Chrysler paint, huh? -
Cracking up...along with my inner fenders!
Minuit replied to coolwind57's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah, my inner fenders fell off in chunks any time I touched anything down there. I got a set off a '96 that are nice and pliable. Made the truck a little quieter too. I think you can still get 'em new, actually. -
Feeling a little festive? Color LED button illumination is now available for orders in any combination of blue, red, green, amber, or white. Available on all Chrysler radios. Extra charge of $15. Red/Green: Blue: White: All radios will have full illumination coverage like the white picture shows. I do not find the brightness to be annoying, but it can be clearly read even in daylight. LED illumination is covered under the new 6 month warranty.

The current prototype is not call compatible. This will 100% change in the future. I will not sell a Bluetooth radio until I fix that little niggle. I consider hands-free calling mandatory for this kind of thing. Currently I replace any buttons that show wear. This is a problem because it means I have to break down nice radios for parts. I'm looking into having stencils made that will allow me to refinish the buttons. I do not at the moment have any plans to expand into the 97+ radios. They are totally different (I'd have to learn all of the variations of those... there are at least 15-20 different ones), and the market for those is unbelievably flooded by at least two other companies that offer similar services at a similar but slightly higher price point. There is absolutely no incentive for me to do so. I'm quite surprised they haven't started offering 84-96 radios yet. Plus, I don't have any vehicles that take those radios and I have no personal interest in them. I only do this because I genuinely like these things.

Yup, those brackets in the pics are the bolt-in option.
-
Here's what the MJ bucket brackets look like. In the DIY index there's a thread about converting bench brackets to work with buckets.
-
The bench brackets only have one slider per side and are missing where the back stud would go. You'll need to either modify those brackets or get some MJ bucket brackets to bolt the seats up.
-
To get the seat off the slider, take the cushion off (4 bolts on bottom of the seat, and then unhook the upholstery) and then take off the 4 nuts under where the cushion would've been.

Hm, this is very interesting. Both of my trucks have D35s that whine at those speeds, although I imagine that's because the bearings are all sloppy. I think I'll try this and report back.
