  2. Just wanted to pop in with some Facebook statistics. So far your truck is the most popular thing that's ever been posted on the page. So far almost 6,600 people have seen it and it's only been up for a day. Since I put it up, 72 people have liked the page (normally about 5 new people like the page each week) Looks like the Internet seriously loves your truck!
  3. Damn, you do good work, and quick too! I've been waffling around for almost 5 years on my truck and I haven't gotten 10% as far as this. I like how you've gone away from the truck's stock form and added a well done personal touch to it. Congratulations on a very much deserved MJOTM.
  4. There's no reason to seek out the AX4. It's just an AX5 missing 5th gear.
  5. Mopar "All Weather" Slush mats. There's a tan set on eBay last I checked. Very nice mats. Edit: Yup. That's about what I paid for my NOS mats, but I'd say they're worth it.
  6. Yes, that sounds like a linkage issue. The plastic bushing on the transmission end of the cable can fall apart over time, check that first.
  7. If it's just the fog light connectors giving you trouble, they're just 2-pin Weatherpack connectors, readily available stuff. Much easier to replace those connectors than replacing the whole harness. A few bucks and 4 crimps/solder joints and you're home free. https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-85391-Weather-Terminal-Assembly/dp/B000CO7GGA/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1488409994&sr=1-1-fkmr1&keywords=weatherpack+2+pin+assembly
  8. Trust me, as the owner of two, the factory cupholder only counts as maybe a quarter of a cupholder... it sucks. Especially on the 89, because when I shift I sometimes knock the bottle/can out of it (happens less often on the 91 too unless I'm careful). I haven't tried the one that mounts on the passenger's side of the console. Maybe it's better? I would do what Don has done here, but both trucks have a shifter in that spot now. Don, is that an OEM carpet? It looks a lot different than mine.
  9. An 86 auto would have one of them there Chrysler Torqueflites in it.
  10. Mine went in fine. Check for petrified bulb grease in the bulb sockets.
  11. Man, that bumper looks good. Might be just what I need for my '89. How big is the gap between the bumper and the corners of the bed?
  12. The Jensen tweeters are what go behind the grilles in the lower dash. They have special brackets to point them roughly at the driver and passenger's chest - not the best location for the tweeter, the 97+ Infinity system locates them in a much better position. The Jensen tweeters are just wired in parallel with the door speaker. They're 8 ohm impedance, so if wired in parallel with a 4 ohm door speaker, you will barely notice them. I'll probably be replacing the tweeter in there with a modern one, since I have 4-ohm door speakers and my amp is 2-ohm stable. Any XJ with "Accusound by Jensen" on the door speaker grilles will have these, and it was a pretty common option. Never available in MJs. For the record, you can stuff a 3-1/2" speaker in the same place the Jensen speakers go, but they'll be pointing at your knees. I wouldn't recommend it. Before I had door speakers, I had 3-1/2" speakers in the dash and 4x6 speakers in the factory location and it sounded terrible. My ears are really sensitive, and the treble was just too much. The tweeters I asked about were part of the Infinity sound system on the 97+ Cherokees. It was optional on any trim package, but more often to be found in the higher trims. The tiny amount of research I've done suggests that these have more going on than just being parallel with the door speakers. Pretty sure there is a separate crossover in the door. I'm fairly sure any 97+ XJ is pre-wired for the entire system, just missing the speakers and crossovers.
  13. Applying it on the rods under the hood? Yes - all of the moving parts under there. Also keep in mind that I don't drive my trucks much, so two oil changes ends up being about every 8 months or so if it seems like an awful lot of hood hinge greasing.
  14. White lithium grease (or similar) every second oil change. I can open my hood with one finger :D
  15. Dang, thanks though  I have a set of the Jensens, so that's probably what I'll go with.
  16. I've been considering adding some tweeters to my truck, and one thing I came across was the tweeters for the 97+ Infinity sound system that were mounted in the mirror panel on the doors, like so: Does anyone know if these fit the earlier model doors and door panels? I plan on adding power mirrors at some point and IMO this would be a good use of the space. Are the tweeters they come with any good?
  17. "ran when parked (15 years ago)" "RARE" "NO TIRE KICKERS OR JOYRIDERS" "RUNS GREAT, JUST NEEDS ROD BEARINGS" 85% of Craigslist is useless crap. If you keep looking though you can wade through to the good stuff. I've made quite a few nice scores from CL ads, but you have to sort through the junk first.
  18. The FSMs are worth their weight in gold. Absolutely essential, if only for wiring diagrams and nothing else. All of the other stuff is just icing on the cake. Good job diagnosing things instead of throwing parts at it!
  19. If the D/S floor is significantly more rusty than the P/S floor I would anticipate the fusebox to be a goner as well, whether the electronics are flaking out yet or not. Those two problems frequently go together - telltale sign of clutch fluid leakage. My 89's driver side floor is about 60% gone, the passenger side isn't bad by MJ standards, the fusebox was completely trashed, and there's a clear trail of rust leading directly from the clutch MC. I'd be extremely leery of any non-project manual MJ for that reason.
  20. 84-86, 87-90, 91-96 are the year splits. The difference between 84-86 and 87-90 is the speedometer cable connection. The 87-90 cable uses a plastic end with a hinged clip. You just need to swap the senders to make the gauges work properly, the tach will work out of the box. Any cluster from 87-90 will work. The speedo end needs to look like this:
  21. Yes, the spring has to be there. That's why you're overheating. Sent from my LG-D850 using Tapatalk
  22. I'd assume that they're all the same tank in different boxes, though. I can't imagine there's more than one place in China making gas tanks for an obscure truck that's been out of production for 25 years.
  23. I took a look at the idea of rocker seat bases a while ago since I was flirting with the idea of doing exactly that. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like you could cut enough height from the MJ seat pedestals to make up for the added height of the rocker mechanism, even if you cut the rear legs down completely. The MJ seat pedestals are about the height of the XJ pedestals with rocker seats, and the non-rocker XJ pedestals are much taller. There's probably enough height in the front, but the rear legs of the MJ seat pedestals are very short due to the slope of the MJ's floor. You might get the seat far enough down that it would be bearable, but it will still be taller than stock. I decided not to pursue it any further since I like the stock driving position and didn't want to sit any higher. I'll be going to a junkyard that to my knowledge has a few of the 80s XJs with rocker seats. If I can remember I'll get some measurements.
  24. I keep flipping back and forth between cloth and leather on the '91. This is not helping. :D This truck has come so far.
  25. I'm assuming you've tried pulling harder? Mine are pretty stiff. I'd try taking the levers off to see if there was anything sticking the recline mechanism in place. I don't think you can get to the guts of the recline mechanism without taking the cover and foam off, but it's worth a shot.
