Unfortunately, Toyota is worse than Jeep these days for cranking out garbage and calling it 'off-road' That FJ thing is about the closest thing I've seen to reaching the lofty bars of uselessness set by Hummer with GMummer(H2,3,4,etc.) I hate to dissagre with u but jeep is also cranking out garbage , like the liberty , compass and that wj or whatever it is. and as far as the new FJ goes yes i don't like them either but i now have some respect for it , during a weekend of camping and wheeling i met this guy who had a new 07 FJ lifted /winch/bumper/33 etc... and he literaly drove this thing like he stole it . he managed to bust out a couple windows, rolled it , jumped it ramed things with it ripped off the factory skid plates . he had a bad a$$ gps/nav unit mounted to dash with wood screws and the interior was destroyed. the best part was it was less than a year old (paid for in cash) with like 29,000 on the ticker .o ya and the guy was one of the biggest Tweaker i have ever met in my life. iv got a couple pictures of it after it threw a rod sitting in the camp grounds , il try to get them today.

where can I get woody trim from?
86FUBAR replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
i can't stand all that fake wood stick on crap because its a fake wood sticker that looks like CRAP . but if u did some REAL wood panels all the way down that wood and IIRC u said u work at a store that wood carry that kind of stuf -
i do a fair amount of brazing at work , some times because of what I'm working on is better suited for it or just to wast time . but regardles i try to braze as often as i can ( and stick weld ) because it is becoming a bit of a lost art , i know it is still used in some industrial applications but many people don't want to wast the time learning something that may take longer than if they just used a mig even if it produced the same results and some times better. iv even used coat hangers and bailing wire as welding rod and had good success with it (nothing structural mind u)and about 6 months ago i got a chance to do some alumaweld and it worked better than i expected , i can't tell u how it works exactly but it works . idont think i would recomend it for realy thin aluminum though i have yet to master the skill.

u try puting a jack under the engine on the oil pan (use a block o wood between) to take some of the weight off the input shaft and then make sure ur puling strait and it should fall out .

Isnt it ilegall to cover the rear liscence plate

why don't u just finger out the spring rate u need and then incorperate a 1" threaded rod in to the spring bucket for adjustment like they do in A$$CAR i mean NASCAR . :huh???:

Bad Vibrations between 35-45 MPH
86FUBAR replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
have u tried to put the truck on jack stands and replicate the vibes ,that might help eliminate the problem . also just because the gears run quiet doesent mean they couldnt be messed up try taking it to shop ( preferably a different shop than the one that did the anitial install) and have them double check the pattern on the gears. also when u did the gears did u replace the bearings in the rearend (all of them)? -
get it profesionaly aligned then see how it feels, sounds like ur caster might be messed up?

Yeah, that's weird. I just looked in my parts manual and it does not list a cable for the 86. But I've found many errors over the years in the parts manual, and I'm positive the two left and right cables after the split for the 86-89 models (p/n 52003188) will work for your 86. Is yours an export model? So was there an issue with the 86 model year caus my parts guy couldnt find anything fer mine so i told him to look for 88-90 lwb cables and he told me that the cables were no longer available , is this true?

congradulations on the schooln ya i went to NTI and it was bada$$ but we could only work on our truck if we had already taken the class for what we were workin on like if u needed to do brakes u could only do them if u were in breaks class or already taken the class, but there were ways around that  . outa courosity whats that school cost caus at the time NTI cost i think 26.xxx.xx or something and compaired to my brothers 3 years at the local JC and 4 at UC stanislaus it was a drop in the bucket (for my parents of course  ) .

This sounds like itl be a great project truck and a nice change from the typical build thread so keep us informed . also remember that it might be mundane but the  is in the detail

Well i hate to be the one to tell ya but ur taking all the fun out of it . some of my favorite party stories happened wile i was under age , caus once u turn 21 the young rebelious feeling of "I'm breaking the law "prity much goes out the window , unles of course ur tryn to be an alter boy. not saying that breaking the law is a good thing but remember , everything in moderation. :brows:

Well when the truck was at 4"and i added the ACOS and the zj pitman arm the track bar angle was all mesed up so i machined a steel slug that was 1 1/4 thick and welded it to the stock track bar mount (frame side) to even things out but when i lifted it to 9" and put the OTK steering on i was going to ream the stock pitman arm and put it back on and that would have put the steering /track bar angle perfict but i ruined the stock arm by trying to ream it manualy . i supose i could have cut the spacer that i welded on off but that would have really screwed with the angle but o well . the track bar on it is temporary anyhow , I'm going to build a new one and make the axel mount kinda like the one that rustys sells but only better. so on urs at 6" u might need to do the same with the track bar. as far as relocating it on urs i don't think u can do that or should for that mater . ya the lift is a nice thing to have acces to whats even better is i can use the whole shop whenever i want day or night and nobody cares. when i put all of the new lift stuf on it (soa , longarms , tires etc ..) i did it during christmas break (we get a week off) so i was in there every day 10 hours plus , wrenching and it was great. and as fer the winch it is the 9.5ti and it cost me 1065.00 back when i had money befor the kid and car payment but the best dam money spent by far.

6" Lift...what else should i expect to change
86FUBAR replied to offroader461's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When i lifted mine up to 9in and swaped the 35 for the 44 the added length of the 44 made the d-shaft length perfict ,of course i wish i knew that the new crosmember had a 1in drop built in to it befor i set the the pinion angle . so what I'm saying is maby try finding a lwb 4x4 d-shaft that had the 35 rear and or droping the crosmember an inch, and if u want measure u d-shaft from center cap to center cap and il measure mine to see if there is any difference (and IIRC ur truck has the factory 44).
