That is wrong, 1986s were available with either the V belt or the serpentine belt setup. I have 2 1986 Comanches with the 2.5L sitting here and they both have the V belt setup on them. I hope this info helps.

WRONG!!! The Mobil 1 oil filters are made by Champion Labs, not Purolator. You may want to read these oil filter studies http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html http://www.corolland.com/oil-filters.html

In 1986 the 2.5L could have either a serpentine belt or V belts. All models with A/C had a serpentine belt, but it could also have a serpentine belt if it didn't have A/C. My 1986 Comanche with the 2.5L has the V belt setup. I think you're onto something though, I don't remember seeing any 1987 and up 2.5Ls with the V belt setup. I think they probably did go to a serpentine belt in 1987.

Your engine has been swapped out then with a 2.5L from 1984-1986 because the 1984-1986 2.5L uses the smaller PH3387A oil filter. In 1987 they changed to the larger Wix 51626 or Napa FIL 1626 oil filter. My 1986 Comanche with the 2.5L uses the smaller oil filter which would be be a Wix 51040. I am currently running a Bosch 3331 oil filter on it though. I hope this info helps.

My Jeep Comanche Question Thread
1986Comanche replied to 1tonMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The 4.0L I-6 is 242 Cubic Inches, not 282. The manual transmission would be a Peugeot BA-10/5, not an AX-15. The AX-15 wasn't used until mid 1989. I hope this info helps. -
Preferred Oil for our "older" engines???
1986Comanche replied to ComancheKid45's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Breaking in an engine is a thing of the past. Break in on new vehicles is almost non-existent. -

I don't have doubts. I know. There are two new 2010 vehicles sitting in my driveway right now. -

New engines are not broken in on regular oil. There is not much break in on these new engines today and they have synthetic oil in them since day one. -

Well, if all you have holding your engine oil in is sludge you have an engine that wasn't maintained very well. Your seals were already shot. -

Synthetic oil does not cause leaks. If you do not have any leaks now, you will not have any leaks with synthetic oil. Break in is not a problem either. Brand new vehicles come with synthetic oil from the factory. -
Preferred Oil for our "older" engines???
1986Comanche replied to ComancheKid45's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The whole thing about not running Synthetic oil in an older engine is nothing but a myth. I have switched many vehicles over to synthetic oil and have never had a problem. If it was me I would run Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic oil and a Mobil 1 oil filter. Royal purple is not 100% synthetic. Mobil 1 is 100% fully synthetic. -
If it's a Comanche Chief then it's not a 1986. The Comanche Chief didn't exist in 1986. The Comanche Chief didn't come along until 1987. I hope this info helps.

The ZDDP that is in diesel engine oil damages catalytic converters. That is why they quit putting it in engine oil for gas engines. -
All 1984-1986 Jeep Cherokees with the 2.8L V6 or the 2.5L I-4 with an automatic had the Chrysler A904 3 speed transmission. The AW4 wasn't used until 1987. The AW4 was never used behind the 2.8L V6. I hope this info helps.

Yeah, it's possible that it was built in 1983 to be a 1984 model. You can tell what year it really is from the VIN. Just look at the 10th character of the VIN. E = 1984, F = 1985, G = 1986. I hope this info helps.
-
It can't be a 1983 because the Jeep Cherokee XJ didn't come out until 1984. I hope this info helps.

Eagle, PM me the VIN, I will run an AutoCheck vehicle history report on it for you. Thanks

Your actual VIN is: 1J7FT66LXKL406839. The first digit is a 1 not an I. Also you have 889 at the end when it is actually 839. I hope this info helps. -

What gears do I have?
1986Comanche replied to ComancheBSJ90's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My 1986 Jeep Comanche factory workshop manual shows two gear ratios available for the 2.8L V6 with an automatic. 3.54 or 4.10. I would bet that it has one of these two. Probably has 3.54s.
