Thought about it this morning: Fuel pump relay. The way to check that is to swap relays and see if that turns on the pump. The relays are in the engine compartment, passenger's side, on the shock tower.
-
First, check to see if it is getting fuel. Lots of write ups on how to do this. One simple way is try cranking the engine; turn it off; press the fuel rail pressure release valve.' WEAR GLASSES! HAVE A RAG TO COVER THE VALVE. GAS WILL SPRAY! This will tell you if fuel is getting to the rail. Next, test for spark. Pull one of the spark plugs. Hold it close to a ground. Have a partner crank the engine. See if it sparks. No Fuel: trace lines back to tank looking for blockage. Replace fuel filer? relatively inexpensive. Test wires to fuel pump. Before Cruiser says it, check out his tips for Renix engines. www.cruiser54.com

No reverse light Voltage
87MJTIM replied to Paul Bruchal's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
One wire s/b Blk/ Yel. This is the feed wire. With ign in run, it will show voltage. The 2nd wire is Brw/Wht. This feeds pwr to the lights. When you put the trans in rev, the switch closes the circuit. Turn ign to run, but don't start engine. Check that you have pwr coming in on the Blk/Yel. Put the trans in rev. see if you have pwr on the Brw/Wht. If not, then replace switch. -

I have a 1988 Pioneer LWB 4.0 5 speed 4x4. I don't know which trans I have. Ill look more at this switch after work today. Thanks for those links! A stock trans is BA10/5 I finally broke down and replaced my switch just before I swapped trans to an AX15. -

Do you have an AX4 or 5 (2.5) or a BA10 (4.0)? The BA has this for its switch http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=939441&cc=1181483&jnid=478&jpid=0 The AX has this switch http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=932883&cc=1181472&jnid=444&jpid=0 -
'87, but I'm biased.

I'd start with the trans switch first. Test it to see if it works. Don't know what trans you have, but the switch is my first guess. -
You guys beat me to it!

The connector looks like C103. It connects the engine and ECU. Here is the '88 electric manual to help guide you. http://comancheclub.com/topic/12083-electrical-manual/

Here is the driver's side When I installed Krusty's receiver hitch, I had to trim the angle piece off. You can see how they're hanging when I installed the hitch. -
Pulled these out of a '93 XJ

Either turn off "auto correct" or use a spell checker. It is hard to follow what you're saying.

Self employed CPA. I prepare tax returns for small businesses and individuals. As long as the govt keeps writing and re-writing the tax laws, I have job security. As Ben Franklin once said: There are only two certainties in life, death and taxes. (I'm not a mortician.)

TV weather just reported Frederick MD 32.5"...and still coming down.

Don't think I am taking it out today. Got about 22" and still coming down. We don't usually get this much snow here in the mid-Atlantic.

Another overheating nightmare
87MJTIM replied to VixJeep's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I thought that also. But, he said a compression test came in at 140 - 150. I would look at the reservoir bottle and cap. On mine, the cap has blown and would not hold pressure. It could screw down "tight" but leak at pressure. Purchase the Volvo cap from NAPA. Another clue is that the bottle fills up when hot. The anti-freeze is expanding from the engine to escape through any crack. It may be due to a crack in either one. Good luck. Let us know what you find.- 23 replies

Need years on Cherokee motor for swap
87MJTIM replied to pitbull4x4's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes, the XJ engines will swap over. However, you will be going to HO from Renix. You will need to rewire you MJ for the swap. Also, the cylinder head may be 0331. These are prone to cracking between cyl #3 and #4 (or 2 & 3). There are lots of write ups on this. -
3:1 - the first is the number of main leaves, the second is the "helper" spring. The second gives additional support for heavy loads. 3:2 - has an additional helper spring. I will find photo of my springs. 3:2 Springs Military wrap

Matching gears is good thing!
-
You will need to have the rear drive shaft from the XJ lengthened, or the DS from you MJ shortened. Most everything else should be a direct swap. There are lots of write ups on converting 2wd to 4wd. Just search on here for it.

Two suppliers of springs for our MJs are General Springs out of KC, MO and Hell Creek. I have GS on mine with the 3:2, military wrap. These lifted the rear by about 3" from the old sagging springs. I has to put 2" spacers up front. I kept mine SUA.
