My BA10 never left me stranded. My complaint about it (and first generation AX15) is the stupid internal slave cylinder. My 87 MJ was on its 5th slave cylinder. I said it was not going to see a 6th. I swapped it out last Aug/Sept after only 28 years and 282,000 miles. Not too bad, if I must say. I am not giving it a bad rap (except for the internal slave).

Look for a 94+ AX15. This will have the external slave cylinder. The 89 to 93 are internal slaves. You will also need a matching tcase with 23 spline input shafts. The tcase from the BA10 has 21 splines. Unless you rebuild the old, you will need a 23 spline. Any tcase behind an AX15 will have 23 splines. If you go external, you will need a new clutch master and slave cylinder. While you are in there, a new clutch and pressure plate should be installed. Be sure to get a kit that matches the trans, not the engine. Changing the pilot bushing/bearing should be done as well. The AX15 input shaft tip changed sizes. Depending on the year of your AX15, the tip may be diff from the old BA10. Here is my AX15 swap: http://comancheclub.com/topic/48136-my-ax15-swap/

How much chain deflection is too much?
87MJTIM replied to 87MJTIM's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I bit the bullet yesterday and ordered a complete set from Rockauto - chain and sprockets. The FSM said that if the chain deflection is more than 1/2" then it should be replaced. It looks like a 1/2" of movement. -
I am working on a 4.0 out of a 93 XJ. I will install it into my 84 CJ7. I am changing all gaskets and seals first. I just took off the timing chain cover and found the chain has a lot of play (maybe). Based on the pictures, should I replace the chain? I don't know the miles on the engine.

Is the vent line clogged? Maybe built up too much pressure and blew out the seal. Just my 2ยข

Don't ask those neigh-sayers for advice. Before tearing the engine apart, be sure to research all aspects of the tear down and the rebuild. Anticipate the parts you will/may need, then expect more needed. Build up the parts list and compare prices for suppliers. Don't forget to factor in shipping if you buy on-line vs. buying from a local supplier - ie. sales tax. I am swapping out a 4.2 carb from a CJ7 for a 4.0 FI. I have read numerous threads on different Jeep forums, and watched several Youtube videos for the swap to understand what I may encounter. I am sure I will have issues not discussed/covered in the threads/videos. I have the engine and am about to start cleaning it and putting new gaskets all over. Good luck. Don't let those others discourage you.

Top two AW4 bolts? Size/Pitch
87MJTIM replied to ParadiseMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You are correct - on the engine... but in the picture, the bolts are backwards. -
Top two AW4 bolts? Size/Pitch
87MJTIM replied to ParadiseMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The white box at the top of the picture has the upper and lower bolts reversed. -
The 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock are 7/16" - 14 x 3"

I know, I know...this is knit-picky, but.... The lines for the passenger tail light don't match the drivers' side. Should have three lines at the top of the lens and the reverse lens is omitted. But I like it!

Has anyone tried the D44 disc kits?
87MJTIM replied to Bonkers's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
This video shows a disk conversion on a D35, but he makes comparisons to the D44. (Watch how he installs the calipers. I caught it while watching) -
Heat coming through shift box
87MJTIM replied to Kalal92's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There is a lower boot cover that covers the trans tunnel (inside the console). Mine ripped years ago. I purchased a lower shift boot for a TJ model. If you search for MJ XJ, the part is no longer available. http://www.morris4x4center.com/gear-shifter-boot-interior-52078970ac.html -
Sounds like the fuel pump. Check the ballast resistor (driver's side fender). Bypass it by connecting the two wire together. If that doesn't solve it, then get the DVOM and test the wires.

Which CPS did you get? For the 89 Renix or for the 98 AX15? S/B for the 89 Renix

Many 86 MJ owners swap Chevy 3.4. I've read it is larger version of the V6 than the 2.8 that came in the 86s. This way you can gain 2 cylinders. The issues with a 4.0 swap is the firewall on the 86 may need to be "modified" to fit the longer engine block. There are lots of write ups on the swap on Comancheclub.

hi newby to jeep life with issues frame rust
87MJTIM replied to Dirtyrussian08's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here is a candidate for a swap: http://smd.craigslist.org/cto/5551855696.html down in southern MD. However, there are issues with putting a 4.0 into an '86. There are lots of write-ups about doing this swap on ComancheClub -
hi newby to jeep life with issues frame rust
87MJTIM replied to Dirtyrussian08's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That truck must have spent it life near OC, MD or the PO parked it in the water. You should search for another MJ to transplant the drive train in to. (Although, every MJ available is probably suffering the same issues.) You could make back some $ by parting it out. It looks like a factory bumper. Tail lights are needed by other MJs. Other parts: leaf springs, tail gate, fuel sending unit, etc. (Where in MD?) -
Mine was leaking. Water was getting under the carpeting and rusting the floor. The body shop found an open metal seam where the cowl top and fire wall panels connect. The factory spot welded the two together and used a seam-sealer. After 25+ years, the seam sealer deteriorated and was letting water in. My experience.

What's in the MJ and XJ - engine, trans, 2wd or 4wd?

Installed Headlight Harness, no Highbeams
87MJTIM replied to Whiz's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I put a harness on my CJ. While driving one night, I hit the high beams...the road went dark. Turned out one of the wires was poorly connected in the in the relay socket. Pulled out the wire. Made a better connection. Re-attached to the socket. I had high beams! -
Bignuke, you are correct. I thought he was looking at that truck. Except for the wiring, he should look at those issues. (Although, he should still look over the wiring.)
-
Ok. Back to the OP's original question. Things to look for: Rust under the carpeting, wheel wells and rocker panels. Look at the wiring to see if it has been hacked up. You said is an 87 with a 92 HO. Did the PO swap the 92 wiring harnesses in the engine bay and dash? Do all electrical items work? All the lights (rear, brake, turn, back up, interior, cargo bed), radio, wipers, heater, AC, horn. Is the spare tire carrier present and working?
-
True, but the title will list it as an 87 model, not 86.
