Did you do Cruiser54's mod to that valve cover while you had it off?

And before somebody links this: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/axle_weights.shtml There isn't a weight on there that's correct. Except maybe the Rockwell weights, if you read the note, as the given weights are with no brakes. Well, maybe some of the other weights are correct without brakes, but they are not noted as such. I guess a D35 might be 127lbs? Nothing else on there matches anything else I've found online. Either way, it's all terribly suspect info at best.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever weighed a complete D30 and/or D35 axle assembly out of a MJ? Or a D44 for that matter. Just trying to figure out some comparison data for potential upgrades. Actually, if you have a known weight for any front or rear axle assembly I'm open to hear it.

AMC20 rear disk conversion
DirtyComanche replied to gogmorgo's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The AMC 20 is fairly short in the pinion snout, IIRC, so yeah, might work out. I doubt it would use a 1350 yoke in a MJ, but hey, it's AMC... If so a 1310 to 1350 conversion ujoint can be easily had. -
I'd buy a 1500 GM truck with the 4.8/5.3 engine. They're cheap, solid, easy to work on, good fuel economy, minimal major issues with components. Just avoid the earlier Flexfuel/E85 compatible ones. IMHO they make the Tundra look like an overpriced pile...

AMC20 rear disk conversion
DirtyComanche replied to gogmorgo's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you're willing to make brackets I'm sure you could use the Isuzu calipers/Explorer rotor setup I used on my D44. Otherwise I would investigate the more common options as the bearing retainer pattern is probably close enough to use the backing plates from one of those axles. -

86 Diesel MJ to VW TDI conversion

Awesome you got this thing going! It really seems like a great swap and I look forward to reading more updates as the inevitable little things all get worked out. -
Death wobble is getting old
DirtyComanche replied to creep_in_the_jeep's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You need a prybar and a jack to do some troubleshooting. Chances are it is one of the following components being loose/worn: ball joints, wheel bearings, control arms (bushings), tie rod/drag link ends, track bar (you already did), track bar bracket, steering box, shocks, or mounting brackets for any of the above or ovalled/elongated holes in any of the above. Or you have a tire that's out of round or out of balance. -
Unending CPS issue after Ax15 swap...
DirtyComanche replied to Bonkers's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I find it hard to believe a flywheel would be far enough out of spec to cause a lack of signal... But hey, it's aftermarket parts, so setting new lows in quality control is an everyday occurrence. Clarify if there truly is no output from the CPS via cranking with a multimeter pinned into it, then go from there. There probably is SOME output, even if the flywheel is out of spec, but if it is too weak then you can be reasonably certain it isn't another part of the wiring. -
I can't hate that, it's clean and cool. I wouldn't personally, but I don't think many people would do a lot of the things I do...

What. Ever. Seriously Don. I know you hate the Renix. But guess what? There's more Renix era XJs still running around than OBD-I HO XJs. You know why I know this? Because I need an external slave AX-15 like a sailor needs his rum, and all I can find is Renix XJs, or 97+ XJs for too much money. The Renix, as stupid, illogical, and inferior as it is, does work, and generally just continues to work. It cranks long, it revs high for 5 seconds when it does start, the idle fluctuates between 300 and 1200rpm for no apparent reason, stoich isn't a fuel ratio that's going to happen, and you're probably going to have a mystery driveability issue at some point BUT still be able to limp it to work/home/the liquor store despite it. Swap the MAP to a GM one, or just buy a spare GM built Renix spec one, get a spare CPS and automatic TPS off Rockauto, drive it, don't look back. I was DDing mine until the slave exploded. Engine problems aren't something I had. Any decent auto parts store has the major sensors in stock (CPS, MAP, automatic TPS). If anything you're more likely to be screwed by the early brake/hub parts as they seem to be much less available now.

I was going to go for a long drive in the woods today. Unfortunately it got cut rather short. 80km in or so, the clutch slave blew up. Full on waterfall of brake fluid coming out of the bellhousing and no pedal at all. Then one of the rear shocks broke the eye off coming out. Which isn't terribly surprising because they were the absolute cheapest Monroe shocks that you could buy and they've seen a lot of washboard. So now to decide if I'm going to throw another internal slave in the clutch, or convert it. One of my YJ friends went through 4 or 5 internal slaves before he gave up and converted, I assumed he was the issue, but there was no reason for mine to fail that soon. At the very least I won't buy anther Luk internal slave.

There's a few, to say the least, especially relative to the number of towns and population. I just switched employers; these guys have 60 or so helicopters, and they're pretty much exclusively used north of 60 during the summer months. And there is a bunch of other operators up here besides them. With current environmental rules everyone is trying to be low impact on the tundra, so running track drills and dragging camps in the summer is out of the question, meaning there's a heavy reliance on rotary aircraft to move things. Plus there's lots of bush planes for longer hauls. The logistics of operating here are rather tricky, fuel is few and far between, and the weather is more than willing to fall apart without warning.

There's like 10km of road here in total. I bet in winter they only plow half of it. Speed limit is like 40km/h at most, and that's on the long stretch to the airport. Everyone here has the worst tires imaginable. It just doesn't matter. I should get a picture of the tires on the ZJ we're borrowing... Also, near as I can tell maybe half the vehicles have plates and insurance. It appears the RCMP do not enforce such rules here.

No ice roads here for some reason, we were asking about that. I guess it's possible to make it, but the government doesn't build ice roads? NWT has lots of them.

So would I. Ummm ... where the heck is Nunavut? Above the tree line in the arctic. Nunavut used to be part of the North West Territory before the split it in half for whatever political reasons. So it's tundra and rock all around here. Everything that comes here did so at a great expense, so nothing ever leaves, if it dies it's just abandoned in place or scavenged for parts.
-
I'd buy it if it was for sale and I could get it home...
-
This is Baker Lake, Nunavut. Population is roughly 2000 I believe. No road access, most people just own quads, but there's a few trucks and obviously some heavy equipment. I'm not sure how long this SporTruck has been here, but it's been a while. There's some other cool old stuff around, unfortunately the internet sucks here so I won't be uploading many photos.
-
I'm in Nunavut. Pretty certain it didn't do anything here. I'm okay with it.

Just tell them no and quit if there isn't any way around it. I work random hours/days and honestly am at the point where I've fairly much decided it has ruined my life. Rotating days and days/nights would be basically the same but with a little more notice, but absolutely wouldn't be worth it without substantially more pay than with the same job on a set schedule.

Going nuts with a wrench buster
DirtyComanche replied to jeeppapa's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Impact. Or a good breaker bar (3/4" drive or larger) with the proper 36mm socket. Smaller stuff gives too much and takes the shock out of cranking on it. Or a slugging wrench and sledgehammer. -
The Cherokee has a renix 4.0l inline 6 It might be worth throwing bearings at/refreshing if you want more power than the 4cyl. Then you could throw the whole Cherokee driveline into the MJ.

:waving: Post up some pics, make a build thread, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Also there is a pile of info on here if you can figure out how to make the search work. Honestly, google searching the site works better than using the built in search, but sometimes neither gets the job done. What engine is in the Cherokee?
