Update: Hood and razor grill obtained, as well as a couple of wagon wheels since a factory wheel had a rot hole all the way through Threw some old gen 1 32” BFG mt’s on there for now Also Loving the old blue on blue Almost got her running the other day, but lost spark. We think it’s the BID distributor, so currently either going to rebuild it or swap to another electronic ignition system

That’s actually a really cool look, a waggy frame would come out to about the same wheelbase. Luckily I have a lead on a section of frame for this truck.
-
To convert them I’m pretty sure you need a 2dr frame to swap them onto, you may be able to drill out a rivet so it will pivot but to get it to lock you need 2dr frames. But as someone with 4dr xj seats in their truck it isn’t that bad, if I ever need to fit something big in behind the seat i just slide them forward a bit and then back after it is in.

Things to grab off scrap MJs
jpnjake replied to Smokeyyank's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There is a bunch of these threads that have been made, my suggestion is look at all of them and try and compile a master list, there’s plenty of upgrade parts from other vehicles in the yard too. Here’s a bunch of the major things off my list. Look at rear axle/springs. interior pieces, taillights, tailgate, Interior switches, drip rails, back window, flares, column -
Awesome truck, with the aw4 and2.5l it should have 4.56 gears in the back from the factory cool option truck, stock is always a great way to go, especially in New England to keep these old 2wd truck off the salt.

Interior is looking great, especially that nice comfy bench seat Hope your enjoying it so far

mismatched BA10/5 trans cases?
jpnjake replied to grayluders's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
@grayluders Back in the day, my dad put a YJ BA transmission into his XJ. All the BA shifters are 2-piece, so you'd have to use a YJ lower shifter handle with the YJ shifter housing. If you put the XJ's (short) top shifter handle on a YJ's lower shifter handle you get nice high effort, short throw shifter. Eventually he wanted an even shorter top handle, for more effort and used the top half of a YJ transfer case shifter handle (even shorter than an XJ top handle) with the bottom half of the YJ BA shifter for a super short, stiff thow shifter. -
1989 MJ Turn Signal Sound Volume
jpnjake replied to AMCyaLater's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I installed a heavy duty one typically used for hazards onto my main flasher spot, it flashes about the same speed with a little louder more satisfying click, and works well with trailers -
Thanks, it’s really a rescue mission, this truck wouldn’t be saved by anyone else, but then again almost all our projects are like that Yours is sweet, these trucks carry a personality with them and once you see it it’s hard to just leave it
-
This is a rescued parts truck, was originally the parts truck for someone’s project due to get parted out after they were done. Short term the plan is to get it running and driving as a yard truck. Longer term is to fix the rust, needs a big floor patch and cab mount supports, and a frame patch or swap, and finding a step side as my dad is really into those. Whatever we do it’ll have an amc V8 with a manual. I want to do a muscle truck style build really bad. My dad wants either a 4x4rig or a muscle truck as well, but we are still thinking on everything.

1976 J-10 snow boss? 6cyl 3 speed man D44’s 4.10’s front and rear Dana 20 tcase medium metallic blue Swb September 1975 build date (almost exact same truck from a 1976 book)

99% of the time it’ll be a 4 pin or a 7 pin connector, a 7 pin requires a decent amount of extra wiring, including a brake controller, 12v supply and reverse. And I will suggest running the marker lights and possibly the turn signals on a relay with a new larger wire carrying the load, I’ve run into problems on trailers with too many lights for my stock wires that blow my fuses. This is mainly a problem on larger enclosed trailers.

Looking great so far, very nice to see you kept it instead of letting the insurance auction it to scrap -
Very nice, nothing beats custom tailgate letters

Engine replacement recommendations
jpnjake replied to Phil86MJX's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I honestly trust jy motors or marketplace used motors more, one of my buddies bought a “refurbished” 4.0 from some local company with a warranty, and he went through 4 new motors, all on their dime, everytime they had coolant intrusion, but he wasn’t allowed to disassemble and find the problem or his warranty was void, he ended up lending it out, and someone overheated it and voided his warranty. He rebuilt a motor himself and has had no problems since. -
What Minuit knows about stock Jeep radios
jpnjake replied to Minuit's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
Sure is, I’ve been collecting a stack of broken stock radios from the junkyard, I keep telling myself one day I’ll try and fix them -
Alloy wheels ok on Metric Ton?
jpnjake replied to EUREKA's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I may or may not have loaded 3000 lbs of bricks in The bed of my MJ with metric ton springs+ d44 earlier this year on alloy replica wheels (chrome TJ Ravine) Took it like a champ, even after we unloaded and did it again 20 minutes later Also lots of towing on them no problem, last trip was over 4000 lbs with both the bed and trailer weight -
Not quite as high but my 00’ XJ is at 282k on its second motor (spun 3 bearings and all 6 with piston slap, put in at 279k) very poor maintenance.
-
Beautiful truck, I’m really a sucker for an MJ earning its keep. Congrats on MJOTM
-
Get a cheap spark tester, and hook it between your coil and distributor, also pull your distributor cap and check the cap and rotor, I’ve seen trucks where the rotor disintegrated or broke in half while driving

The Alabama Turbo Diesel
jpnjake replied to ThreeComanches's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
99% sure it’s an original TD The questions we’re on the specific engine in it being the original one that came in it (most likely not) (my belief comes from when I looked it at, seemed all original TD to me)
