Can Spell Comanche

Can Spell Comanche (2/11)

  1. Thanks! The gold wheels it had on it before were very unique, but not to my taste so they've since gone to a better home with a faux wood panel Cherokee XJ owner. I found the remanufactured 6 spoke wheels on CARid. It was. I'll note that it was not honestly represented by the seller on BaT which was a bit of a disappointment as I flew out to pick up the Jeep and was then told of all the known issues with it, and found some of the others on the 1,200 mile drive home. Very happy with the Jeep, just not with the seller or that particular BaT experience. It's a clean Jeep and been worth the investment to get sorted out.
  2. Registry entry: https://comancheclub.com/topic/72938-1j7ft36l5kl607370/ I ride motorcycles as much as I can, so the Comanche has mostly been used as a truck for hauling stuff and as a bad weather driver. Some of the early changes I did were removing the overlanding equipment that came with the Jeep from the previous owner as I tried a few nights of rooftop tent camping and am not a convert. My more recent projects were installing a Softopper, Fey/Westin rear bumper, and @krustyballer16 receiver hitch. For the Krustyballer receiver hitch I filed down some of the few sharp edges left by the laser cutter, wiped it down with alcohol, and then painted with two coats of Rust-Oleum Farm & Implement Low Gloss Black as this is an easy paint for me to touch up as needed over time. @87MJTIM's thread on installing the receiver hitch with the Fey/Westin bumper gave me the confidence to know it would work with slight modification. One thing I did differently was that instead of entirely trimming the angle bracket of each bumper bracket, turning them into flat stock, I found that if I flipped the left and right brackets then I only needed to trim them to fit the frame rails. This would be stronger than trimming them entirely flat, but still I have no plans to tow with the bumper itself, that's what the hitch is for. With the Fey/Westin bumper brackets you need to use two of the washers they provided in the kit for each bracket bolt to the frame, which there are three of per bracket, for a total of twelve washers to deal with as spacers. I would have had an awful time with this if my helper had not come up with the idea of using aluminum tape to fold around a stack of two washers, and then use the excess tape to align it as you slide the bolt through, then pull the tape away. That worked great. For the bumper bracket bolts I used the ones Krustyballer provided as they're the appropriate length to fit through the stack of receiver hitch, bumper bracket, washers, and frame rail. Wanting to avoid splicing into wiring, I purchased an OEM rear bumper wiring sub harness from eBay and used that plug-and-play setup instead of the wiring that Fey/Westin provided. For the trailer wiring I bought the factory-style plug-and-play wiring harness from Howe It's Made. For a bed cover to keep the weather out, I wanted something that would be easily removable for loading motorcycles or other large items in the bed of the truck so I went with a Softopper. I may end up camping in the bed at some point as well.
  3. Nice find! Any details on the camper shell? It looks like a nice fit.
  4. Just seeing this thread, but looks like a great project! Years ago a neighbor drove me out to Racine, WI where I picked up my own "Kenosha Cadillac," a 1988 AMC Eagle Wagon for $300. It was a good winter driver, but the last automatic I hope to ever have owned lol. At that time the Eaglesnest forum was a great resource, but I think that went away many years ago leaving just the AMC Eagles Den forum and The AMC Forum. I've owned many AMCs over the years so mostly stuck to the AMC forum which had great info for my 60s and 70s vehicles, but was lacking for the late model AMCs. Nice to sign up for this forum now that I own a Comanche, and be surprised by seeing an Eagle Wagon build here! Keep up the good work.
  5. 1989 Jeep Comanche Pioneer Renix controlled 4.0L i6 / AX-15 / NP231 / Dana 30 / Dana 35 / SWB Build date: 5/89 Current Location: Chicagoland, Illinois, USA Status: Winter driver Notes: A prior owner converted it to 4x4. Cloth bench seat, floor shift. Current owner: @AMCyaLater
  6. Yes, it is 18" tall and it is the 58" one meant for a 6ft+ bed on this short bed. If you are mounting a roof top tent like it has on it, I would recommend going with something shorter if you don't mind losing the height within the bed because 18" puts the RTT above the cab height.
  7. It is an RCI Metalworks bed rack with C-clamps https://rcimetalworks.com/product/universal-bed-rack/ Here are some photos I have on hand of it, can take more when it's light out again tomorrow if you'd like.
  8. Had to go to two different hardware stores to find enough flange bolts, not much in the way of metric hardware at my local ACE or Home Depot. Next time will just order from McMaster-Carr. Ended up going with 10mm-1.50x30mm flange bolts. 8 to attach the bumper mount brackets to the frame, 4 and some matching flange nuts to attach the bumper to the brackets. Good enough for now. I can use the tailgate with ease. Will look into more useful bumper options later (2" hitch receiver). Next steps are to pull all the overlanding stuff off the bed from the previous owner... Thanks for the help!
  9. Thanks! I can make out the M10 X 1.5 from that so at least have that part confirmed. Can't make out the length, but I suppose if I were to buy ones on the longer side that wouldn't hurt anything.
  10. My 1989 MJ came with a custom swing out spare tire bumper that doesn't work for me as I regularly use the tailgate, so I am putting an original rear step bumper on it. I have the bumper, but not the hardware so unsure of the thread and bolt lengths to use. Some fasteners pinch the mounting bracket to the frame and the bumper to the bracket, others seem to thread into weldnuts that are in place inside the frame. Does anyone know the specs of the part # 34201991 ? That is the "discontinued" bolt that I am looking to match with something grade 8 from my local hardware store. I think it is M10 with a 1.5 pitch, but knowing that for sure and the length would save me some trips to the store. Hoping sometime might have quick access to look it up. It's part #14 in this diagram: Thanks in advance. This forum has already been a great resource of knowledge.
  11. Howdy folks. I have a 1989 MJ and my turn signals work just fine, reasonable speed and all, but the ticking sound associated with the turn signal is quiet in the cab and I would like to be able to hear it better rather than just seeing the indicator lights on the dash. Is there a louder flasher relay I could install?
  12. Looks like you've made great progress on it!
