  1. If I'm the "other guy", sorry I didn't respond. I have my time and money tied up right now so whoever can snag your shell has my blessing. I appreciate your willingness to pick this truck for others and it is a real shame to see such a vehicle at a junkyard. But you might as well pick it clean if you are able.
  2. Didn't Bo (shelbyluvv) just make a trip to Vegas for JY pickin'? Someone should perform a welfare check on him in case he is having thoughts of hurting himself or others.
  3. Don't forget about CA's strict emissions laws. It has to be equipped with mandatory smog equipment and pass the test to be registered for street use.
  4. You should also grab the bucket seats if they are not messed up. A lot of members want the seats and/or brackets. I would love to get that topper for my 88.

    CJ10 Sketch

That's a lot better than me. The only thing I can draw is a breath.
  6. See if this DIY from shelbyluvv helps. He goes into some detail regarding the key switch.viewtopic.php?f=9&t=20204

    Stupid prius

I would totally drive one of those. I will not drive a Smart Car. Last week's Top Gear challenge was between the Smart, the Fiat 500, and the Scion IQ. The "loser" had to drive the Trident for a whole day in his hometown and Rutledge Wood drew short straw. It was hilarious. :rotfl2:

Yes, it could be much worse! Image Not Found

  11. After removing the gauge cluster on the 87 to repair the plastic speedo boot, I went for a test drive to check my repair and the speedo worked fine. BUT nothing else worked. All other gauges were dead. After about a mile, every gauge kicked on and worked fine for the duration of my test drive. For future reference, is there some sort of re-set mode for gauges or is this a freak experience?
  12. I don't know about the kit but I learned a trick to put 1oz of brake fluid into the PS reservoir. It swells the gasket but doesn't eat it. For me , it worked like a charm.
  13. You're traveling 50 miles one way? Is the seller meeting you at the end of your driveway?
  14. I'll be in San Antonio this Wed. thru Sun.. My son graduates AF Basic Training on Friday and my brother just moved there a couple months ago. If I get a chance I'll check out this truck and find out why they think it's worth more than $1500.
  15. If the wood isn't damaged, just sand it down and re-stain it with a gun stock or walnut type stain topped off with a good linseed oil. You'd be surprised how nice it will look for very little cost.
  16. What's the build date on your '85 MJ? You might have the proto-type.
  17. Wow, that's a tough spot. I've never had to but I've read posts about drilling out the bolt or even welding a head back on. Hopefully someone with actual experience can help out on this one.
  18. I just checked one I have leaning up against my shed. The cable is actually a wire looped at the driver's side and hooked at the passenger side. It runs unhindered without going through any rings. You could probably tighten up the hooked end but the wire is most likely going to stretch again. I would run a new wire or cable since it's so simple and inexpensive.
  19. A buddy of mine had a garage floor poured a few years back and he included a "work pit" beneath the vehicle area. He made it to a depth he could perform work under the vehicles while standing and comfortably reach most components. If it's something you'd consider, I don't think it would add too much more planning and labor. He loves having his.
  20. A few days ago I pulled every fuse and cleaned each terminal as best I could. I also used a very narrow flat screwdriver to gently pry each side of every terminal toward the center to tighten up the spacing. This works if the terminals are in good shape. Two of mine broke off as soon as pressure was applied so you may find some brittle ones.
  21. Here's a post on the same question regarding D35 but the width should be the same. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=36372

    The words out

Since you don't even have to find MJs anymore as they now find you, I say the next step is to answer the phone, give directions to your place, check out truck from porch, instruct seller to park it amongst the other MJs, and swap $200-$300 for paperwork & keys. All whilst sipping your coffee and finishing your crosswords.
  23. There is a hold down clip along the frame rail about mid-point from the transmission to the firewall. Remove this clip (10mm socket) and you will get about 2-3 inches of slack in the cable, allowing you to pull the cluster enough to see and feel.
  24. Thanks for the help guys! I actually have an idea how to repair the broken plastic piece but if this doesn't work I will go with one of the aforementioned sources. Interestingly, the cable in the 87 is 70" and the 86's is 80". I know the 86 is LWB but how does that affect the distance to the tranny?
