Clutch Slave FUBAR or not?
pizzaman09 replied to Gojira94's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I was exclusively replacing the throw out bearing that kept sucking in air through the bleeder. I was lucky enough to do it on a two post lift but we didn't have a lift height transmission jack so we had the truck about 30 inches off the ground. The clutch didn't need to be changed, it had been replaced shortly before I purchased the truck by the Jeep dealership that owned my truck for years. Unfortunately, I suspect the new internal slave they put in must have been low quality. I didn't care if the internal slave was the simpler cheaper swap, I wanted mine fixed in a way that I would not have to worry about. The Novak kit and an all metal external slave from Oriley has worked flawlessly. Though I will say my clutch pedal weight about doubled after doing the conversion, I think I need a different master cylinder. I wish you the best on your repair, it's certainly a lot simpler and less expensive to maintain the internal slave cylinder. -
Oil dipstick strangeness
pizzaman09 replied to hgeranium's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm just here to appreciate your artistic capability and how perfectly your drawing describes the issue of reading a 4.0L dip stick. -
I never thought to check, the truck is astoundingly stock and original for the miles it has on it, I'd be surprised if anyone messed with it.

Clutch Slave FUBAR or not?
pizzaman09 replied to Gojira94's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I understand and am really impressed if you can swap out an internal slave in 1.5 hours. When I did mine it took me 4.5 hours to get the pilot bearing realigned when putting it back together. -
Clutch Slave FUBAR or not?
pizzaman09 replied to Gojira94's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I personally recommend converting it to external slave of your willing/able to spend the money. I was very frustrated with my internal slave AX-15 and just went and did the Novac conversion. It was a great upgrade and I haven't had any clutch issues since doing so. -

Have you been having issues with your clutch actution? I'm guessing there was a reason you wanted to bleed it. -
I'll be the person that has issues with that tire size rubbing on an all stock setup. I have BFG 235 75 R15s on my truck on the factor wheels and I get rubbing at the lower control arm at full lock turning left. I don't have the issue at full lock right and didn't have that issue with 235 75 R15 light truck tires that didn't have blocky tread on the edges.

Ideas Wanted: Softer Release of Parking Brake
pizzaman09 replied to NickyV's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It sounds like you want a small hydraulic damper to attach to the handle to reduce the release velocity. I agree they do release with some fury, I always use my foot to guide it up. That said I've never been tempted to do what you are suggesting to use the parking brake on a hill start. My parking brake barely has enough grab in reverse to hold the back from a puppy breathing on it. I'm guessing the rear drums on my truck are not functioning properly. -
I feel like I've been in this conversation many times. I was at a guitar store in Pittsburgh and in the middle of a very rainy day one of the employees ran out of the store practically begging to buy my Comanche. He had had one as his first vehicle and had been looking for another.

Though it is sad, I was happy to see how Penn State played. I am glad to see someone told the offensive coordinator that we need to do more than just run up the middle.

Awesome job everyone!

Penn State football fan here! I've only been to one game in person, but there is nothing like the atmosphere of so many fans in one spot.

Engine bay cleaning methods?
pizzaman09 replied to hgeranium's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
For areas that are more muddy/dusty, my preferred chemical is Whitewall Tire Cleaner. Then I just use a damp rag and a drum of elbow grease. It's meticulous and slow but works well without destroying anything. -
I can appreciate liking to listen to tapes. I have a 70s vintage Pioneer tape deck in my Sprite that I listen to tapes in when I drive. I'm thinking about upgrading it to a 90s tape deck as the Pioneer has eaten too many tapes for my liking and the radio only has manual tuning that can't quite make it down to 88.5 which is a favorite local station of mine. Go for it, part of the charm of driving older vehicles is getting the experience of being in the time period.

I had a lady in a minty TJ smile and wave today appreciating the MJ.

Woohoo! I'm always a fan of more Comanche content and I appreciate that Colt usually build manual shift vehicles, a rarity in the office road sphere.

Are you interested in playing some other media type like CDs as well? Are you planning on keeping it single DIN?

I primarily drive older cool vehicles. My Comanche gets considerably more attention than the others. The attention is mostly from random strangers but there is the occasional Jeep owner that's into it. I once had a CJ just stop in traffic to stare at my MJ, and another time had a guy hang out of the back window of a newer Cherokee to give me a thumbs up and yell how awesome it was on a 70 mph highway. Its gets a ton of attention at the hardware and farm stores.

Restoring 10 hole eliminator wheels
pizzaman09 replied to hgeranium's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm not exactly sure, the place that did mine was a car detailing business. But the person who ran it started to specialize in rims. I had basically googled rim refinishing and found the place. -

The person that did mine was super excited to do them, he really enjoyed doing the crazy 80s wheels. -

pizzaman09 replied to hgeranium's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had the 10 hole Eliminator wheels on my truck refinished locally. Mine are the ones with the rivets around the perimeter. The refinisher hand sanded them then painted them the original color, turned out real nice. He didn't want to use a machine to do the sanding due to the rivets. -
I have Rancho RS5000 shocks on the front of mine. They are just more stiff than I desired.

I might as well just ask here: Overspray
pizzaman09 replied to Spinnakerblue89's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Goof off is good stuff, it's a mix of Xylene and Acetone. The issue is it melts most plastics so use with caution. It allowed me to take yellow road line paint off of the side of a car once. You might also try a Mr. clean magic eraser. Those have just a tiny bit of abrasive in them and do a great job cleaning up random junk.
