  1. On the drive from southern California to Northwest Pennsylvania my Comanche averaged 21mpg. Average speed was high and including the high elevation drive through Colorado and then the following day with engine pinging in Kansas due to the low 85 octane Colorado fuel. 1988 4.0L, BA10/5 trans, 4x4 short bed. 205/75R15 tires, and 3.08 axle. It had a Banks header and a brand new catalytic converter.
  2. @Far McKon I'm not sure why on the double carpet. The previous owner said he had done it along with dynamat to make it quieter. It was a very quiet truck. It also had a new catalytic converter which may have also quieted things down a bit and was riding on Mastercraft white wall passenger car tires. Short of needing some door and window seals, it was a great quiet ride, much quieter than the 2013 Mini I used to daily.
  3. I absolutely love the graphics packages with the hockey stick SporTruck graphics being my favorite. There are a surprising number of awesome graphics that came on Comanches.
  4. Mine had dynamat and two layers of carpet, it was very quiet. It was also running on Mastercraft passenger car tires, made for a pleasant drive from southern California to Northwest Pennsylvania. When I find a replacement Comanche I plan to do a similar interior quieting setup.
  5. Prove if it's a fueling problem by trying to start it and keep it running on some starter fluid or a spray bottle of fuel into the intake.
  6. I'm looking for basicly the same truck. I'd be good with any seat arrangement, 5 speed, 4.0, 4x4 is a must. Good luck!
  7. Not particularly pertinent information to a Comanche, but I recently helped diagnose a very similar issue on a 87 Toyota MR2. After rebuilding the distributor and replacing the coil, the dying while driving after a short time persisted. The issue turned out to be the throttle position sensor was worn out at the closed position. Turning in the throttle plate stop screw 1/16th of a turn allowed the sensor to sit in a fresh position and fixed the problem!
  8. This is a topic that has conflicted me for a while. The 88 Comanche I had, had a very nice condition bench. I loved the versatility with things being easy to store behind it and the ability to put three people in it. However, I didn't find it the most comfortable, I have long legs for being 5' 11" and I always felt like I could have used an extra inch or two. Also the seat, though in great shape was kind of crowned and it always felt like I was tipping towards the drivers door. I am thinking it may have needed some new foam. I am intrigued to get a Comanche with buckets but could honestly deal with either. The bench wasn't that uncomfortable, I did drive it 3,500 miles home when I bought the MJ.
  9. I'm getting my second shot this week! Quite excited. First Pfizer shot left me with an achey arm for a day, was playing volleyball the following evening so it didn't hit me too hard. My twin brother made the mistake of getting it in his right arm and he said shifting into 5th gear on his drive to work the next day was a struggle.
  10. Not in Comanche but on another car I have I did a very custom engine head setup. I made a handy notebook were I labeled every wire and hose I disconnected on both ends with a number and made a corresponding entry as to what they were in the notebook. This also was done for bolts and hardware where I put them in numbered zip lock bags with a description written on them. That high level of organization made my life much easier when I installed the unique custom engine head a year later.
  11. My project is a bit different. My twin brother and I have been working on a rotary valve engine head for a 99 BMW 328is. To put it simply, we replaced the stock engine head with a custom built design that utilizes rotating valves to time the intake and exhaust instead of poppet valves. It runs alright. We are presently modifying the timing to reduce the aggressiveness as we over did it in the initial go around with timing that would be at home in a NASCAR engine.
  12. We get some great sunsets in NW Pennsylvania.
  13. Usually I'm listening to Depeche Mode or pop from the 60s to 2010. Lately though I've been on a jazz or ragtime kick, Glenn Miller, Scott Joplin...
  14. I am shopping for another Comanche, I should not have sold the one I had. I have a twin brother, we share our cars. This summer my daily was the 62 Austin Healey Sprite. My brother dailied the 99 BMW M3 coupe. The M3 is autocrossed anytime we can. Now that winter is closing in, the 99 Oldsmoblie Eighty Eight will come out and perform winter duty along with the M3.
  15. I have searched high and low, and wish I could find glass 7 inch rectangular housings with interchangeable bulbs, say an H4 style. I've done this upgrade with 7 inch round lights on my Austin Healey, with some excellent LED h4 bulbs and couldn't be happier. Way lower power draw and still very classy looking. It seems all the rectangular led upgrades look like some alien eyeball.
  16. Bad Obsession Motorsports is the best channel on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/c/BadObsessionMotorsport I also appreciate Regular Car Reviews due to just how Pennsylvanian it is, and the car reviews are just plain strange. https://www.youtube.com/user/RegularCars
  17. Thanks! I had one and completely regret selling it. I'll find the perfect one and am able to weight to find it. Looking for the dream 4.0L, 5 speed, 4x4, short bed, sport truck with AC, preferably in white with hockey stick graphics.
  18. I'm mostly commenting as this was a very interesting read from an off roader point if view. I've done a lot of autocross racing with various LSDs. I've run stock 25% lock up plate style LSDs in a BMW M5 and M3. I went with a Quaife torsen LSD in my Mini. Between the two different types on the race track, they both feel the same. The Mini originally had an open diff and the torsen diff made a world of difference. Being 2wd vehicles, the LSDs were worth their weight in gold in the snow. When I do pick up my next Comanche someday, I will likely be going the torsen style diff route for it.
  19. I did a similar drive, I purchased a 88 4.0L 5 speed 4x4 sport truck in Los Angeles and drove it to Western Pennsylvania over a hot early summer week. Truck had 176k miles on it at the beginning of the trip. I had no knowledge of MJs when I bought it, wasn't even planning to buy one, but I knew the 4.0 would be up for he trip if it ran at all. I only had one little issue on the 3000+ mile drive home. The crank case ventilation pumped the intake with oil in Kansas. $6 spend at the small town auto store had me on my way. I was super impressed. If I'd done the trip again, I'd have found some wheels that weren't bent and didn't wobble. Your truck sounds like it's needed more work, but once you get it sorted, point east and enjoy the drive!
  20. I saw your video, I like the truck! I agree about the headlights, a more stock looking light would be good. Your truck is very pretty, I particularly like the tire and wheel combo.
  21. I do think that white with sport truck graphics and a the black grill is the very best look for these trucks. Nice find!
  22. Aeromotive was used by my insurance company when I needed the harness rebuilt. I had a bit of a melt down going to the fuse block. According to the receipt I recieved from the shop that did the install work, they got charged a little over $1000 by Aeromotive. They did an excellent job and the harness looked fantastic. This was for the interior harness only on my 88 4.0L sport truck.
  23. Likely an expensive option, but when I had an electrical fire in mine, my insurance company ended up paying to have the harness repaired by Aeromotive. They did a phenomenal job, replacing every wire in the loom that needed to be replaced. They used all of the original connectors.
  24. Nicely done. I'm trying to figure out why one would do this. Are you planning to put something in the area the area resides?
  25. Thank you for the feedback! Having read significantly into how the renix system works, it is fundamentally a simple system to work on. I've tuned EFI systems and I've gone through the balancing act of synchronizing dual carbs, mostly it just takes patience and some research to perfect. Does anyone know when exactly the AX-15 transmission went into production? I'd really like to avoid a BA10/5 if possible. My 88 had the BA10, it actually was a joy to use but it wanted nothing to do with 2nd gear until it warmed up a little bit.
