Wow thanks. Having a part number helps a lot. Summit and Crown has them for $17 The green nylon piece also has a crack in it. No chance that part is still available??
You stated that it sounds different. Cranks fast. Pull the oil fill plug on valve cover. Have someone crank engine. See if rocker arms are moving. Pull plugs check for compression.
Sounds like the clutch for the fan has gone bad. It is basically free spinning. When you are driving you have air flowing through the radiator. When sitting still the fan is not pulling air through the radiator to cool.
Is it possible the thermostat is stuck open? If the coolant is flowing to fast for the radiator to cool it can run hot. Especially during stop and go traffic.
I know that the fan on the 4.0 sits off to the passenger side. Not directly in the middle. I had a 1987 cherokee for parts. So I decided to drill out the spot welds and reweld new parts.
You might be able to use an electric fan and do away with the mechanical fan all together. I also put the auto trans from the 87 into the 86. I had to have the driveshaft shortened.
Other than that it was not that big of a job.
My 1986 came with a 4cyl. I had to knock where the firewall curves into the transmission tunnel, about where the temp sensor is located at the back of the head. In about an inch or two.
Also the support for holding the radiator needs to be swapped. I had a 1987 XJ that I used for parts and comparison.
I bought some clips off ebay last week. Have not tried them yet. Just gathering parts for my 1986 MJ restoration.

Did you ever figure out what was causing the chirping? FYI mine would do the same thing. Found the rubber in the harmonic balancer had gone bad. The HB had shifted and was barely touching the timing chain cover. (After changing idler pully, water pump.)
