Try to find a R/T Durango if you're gonna get one at all. 3.92 gears, awd, tow package, f/r swaybars, 1" drop with sport susp., 17" wheels big wide tires, beefed up 5.9 (+10 hp an +15 tq), f/r discs., not to mention the interior and ext. extras. I recently towed my j10 on a full size car hauler. It performed great. nice acceleration, handling, and braking. Not near as nice as my dads 3/4 ton dodge, but it was only an 1/8th the price. I love the durango now. Momma and a 5.9L..... Would you actually give a crack addict a big bag of crack??? My wife had a VERY heavy foot. She is looking at the AWD models though. She has it in the ZJ and loves it.(plus its nice not to get the 'do I need the put the Jeep in part-time or full-time or low' calls.)

'Big Ton'/'Metric Tonne' Conversion
whowey replied to Maveric's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have an 88 Metric tonne. I throw a couple of empty D-35 housings in the back to keep the ride at least respectable. But, that being said I have over 2800 lbs in the MJ before. Its not real fun to start with the mighty 3.07 gears. Not real fun to stop either. I am the second owner, and I have 261k on the odometer, My MJ had its Pugeot replaced with another Pugeot at 140k.(PO did that, yet another reason to NEVER buy a truck from an engineer) -
Bringing this up, I think it would be a great idea to build a system that could tie in with the tow vehicle that could be set up to hit the brakes on the vehicle being pulled when the tow vehicle does. Essentially, make use of the trailering vehicles brakes. If you catch my drift here... They already make one.... My dad uses it behind his motor home to tow his Dakota. It has a large box that sit on the floor of the Dakota, and has an arm that goes to the brake pedal in the Dakota. His connects to the motorhome with a cable, but he said they are available in radio controlled versions. It plugs into the optional 12v power port in the dash. When you step on the brakes in the motor home, this device has an electric motor that pushes the brake pedal in the Dakota. Works like a charm. Takes about 10 minutes to get into and out of the truck and get the linkage hooked up and ready to go. I will call him and see if he has a digital with him to take a picture on it for me. It is very spendy though..... About $750 IIRC. I saw it at the showroom of the local Winnebago showroom when I was in seeing if they had any leads on old Diesel Lesharos.... :brows: Seems like it is called a brake toad, or something similar. And TADA! www.brakebuddy.com (A whole lot newer, and fancier than the one my dad uses but the exact same concept)

Finding right Axel at the JY
whowey replied to MJCanadian's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Actually, only the center section is aluminum. But its also coil sprung, and uses a track bar. This is a 2wd DD, and the guy wants to move up from 3.07 to 3.55 gearing. In this situation getting a D-35 is a good solution. -
Well, which was it???? A ZJ or a KJ? (One is certainly cooler than the other, and no the cool factor from the diesel motor doesn't offset the rainbow happiness of the ladies Jeep) I have towed an XJ about 70 miles flat behind my ZJ. My ZJ is a 95 5.2L with the factory towing package(HD tranny cooler,3.73 gearing,Yada,Yada,Yada) Will is start it? Yes Will it stop it? Yes Was it fun and something I want to do again? NO I towed another XJ about 40 miles on a tow dolly behind my ZJ. Start it? Yes Stop it? Yes, much better the dolly had surge brakes on it. Want to do it again? Not really, it still felt like you are 'on the edge' all the time. But a ZJ wheelbase is only 104" compared to an XJ's of 101". I don't even want to imagine fighting my long bed MJ(120"). Pete, while we are on the topic. How did using the Durango work? My wife wants to 'upsize' the family car, and my dad raves about his 4.7L Dakota. He says it feels so much better when towing than his old 5.2l Dakota.

God that was a good looking truck back then.

Finding right Axel at the JY
whowey replied to MJCanadian's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
MOST manuals behind the 4.0l will have a 3.07. MOST autos behind the 4.0l will have a 3.55 The original purchaser though order any of the available gear ratios. That being said, yes there was a tag that had the ratio on it on the cover. It will be attached to one of the cover bolts. I have yet to find one that is in decent shape. But the best way is to open the cover and count the teeth on the pinion and the ring gear. If you take the ring gear teeth and divide that by the pinion gear teeth you will get the gear ratio. ring gear teeth/pinion gear teeth = gear ratio. Or a 3.55 ring gear has 46 teeth, and the pinion gear has 13. -
Thanks Pete, now I feel old..... I remember when the red one was 2wd, and you were fudging around with those Ford axles.

If its a two wheel drive its not a bad use. I'm glad its not another Honduh, or another pile of Caprice(like we see here)

If the sender puts the wrong city, or worng zipcode in, it completely throws their system into a tizzy. Over the years I've dealt with many, many misshipments with UPS. Probably better than 90% were end-user mistakes.

Best help, the miltants can buy....
-
My sister's warn m8000 doesnt either. the bolts that go into the bumper provide your lateral strength, those bars would do very little, no real need for the lower bars. My M8000 has the bars, The bars provide additional lateral support for off-center pulls.
-
Ever seen one go up in flames????? They make one wicked smell....
-
After reading the 'article' on JeepForum, I wouldn't even condsider that winch with an ARB. If you look at the M8000, when you put it in the ARB the cable actually feeds out the bottom of the winch. That SmittyBuilt winch has no supports across the bottom of the winch. So you would be winching across the side with no supports on it.
-
A Warn M8000 will fit an XJ ARB. No reason to go cheap on a winch... That does look ALOT like how the Warn winches are setup though.
-
Do it to the 3800, and dress it like an SCCA MJ. That would be SWEET! haha, would it kill ya to know I thought of putting the 3" lift and 31's on the 89 today, and the 89's lift on the 3800 today? then I thought why do i need a mall-crawler. but then I also need a plow truck. I have a plow FOR a comanche that's complete and functional, but it can't go on the 3800 (stored winters from now on). the 89 is just too high for it too...so if the 89 was lower and the 3800 were higher....:D Buy an el-cheapo Cherokee. Plow is exactly the same for the Cherokee. Then you don't have to manage an MJ to plow.

If I could get that smell out of that thing, I would sooo steal it and replace mine with the enourmous butt hole. Welcome to asylum......

The problem with RockAuto is that you will probably end up getting a bumper delivered to your house. And when you call to get the mistake cleared up, they will ask if you are sure it isn't what you ordered. Then want you to return the bumper on your dollar, and then want you to pay to have your right parts shipped out to you.
-
I would SOOOOOO buy this one. Perfect color, long enough bed to be useful. Reminds me of an old Willy's p/u or what the Scrambler should have been.
-
Is it just me, or does that rear axle LOOK way too far back??? Not commenting on its performance, just the appearance.

Ahhh ... I've seen 2" x 20' snatch straps (the kind with the fabric loop) in Wal-Mart. Not the greatest -- I think theirs are rated 15,000 pounds and most are 20,000 -- but a lot better than nothing and a new 15,000 pound strap is probably better than a ten-year old 20,000 pound strap that been drug over so many rocks it's barely hanging on by a thread. It's amazing to me how little regard some Jeepers (and other wheelers) have for their own lives and the safety of the people they run with. I meant the truck straps, not recovery or snatch straps.
-
I'll have to google, but a guy was killed last year or 2005 by chains breaking and going through the back window of his truck. I believe it was in Michigan.
-
I haven't seen that style anywhere but on the west coast. I see the kind with the metal clip on them here and out east.
-
AutoZone and O'Reillys both carry straps, Petro used to, so check your local truck stop. TSC and Farm and Fleet both did. But the last time I went looking to pick an extra up, F&F only had ones with metal hooks. Farm and Fleet, and TSC both carry a HUGE selection of clevis. Remember to look at the tags they have the weight limits on them. Also get the screw-style rather than the snap-pin style.

X2 for me. Work, girls and cars diverted my interests. I've got a little boy now, and he starts Cubs in about a month.(Right after school begins.) X3 for me... X2 on the girls, work and cars thing. i work every monday (truck day) so i couldnt attend meetings. my brother is eagle though. I'm brotherhood in the OA Work at a grocery store???? I actually had the same reason. Mondays were truck day at the supermarket where I worked, and I could go to the meetings, but then I worked 10pm to 4am, and had to go to school at 7a. I made it to the second level of OA, I can't remember what it was called. We had to do some goofy super-primative camping/ slave labor project that was even worse than the one we had to do for OA the first time.
