  1. I prefer the bench too but i use a pillow to get some extra support... bad back you know but since my bench is falling apart as it ages, i may get some bucket seats after all...
  2. drop the starter, disassembly it and check the carbon brushes, replace if worn...
  3. don`t try to star it until you clean up everything, change the oil, prime the oil pump and recheck all fluids, including brakes, you don`t know how many people fire them up, take them for a ride and then realize ther have no brakes...
  4. He's talking torque converter, not trans to transfer case. Torque Converter Transfer Case i know
  5. the page covers pretty much everything, most swaps involve the input gears (21 vs 23 splines) and later on changes in wirign hanesses and TCU, nothing about TCs so i assume all swap you happy?
  6. info here http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?s=ee39d66e373e148ef73e3b3df29d1e2d&t=1053970
  7. somethign touching the drivshaft? happened to me after dropping the tranny to change the rear freeze plug, i accidently left a wire hanging and was grinding against the driveshaft..
  8. you can you gonna go deaf in no time, either that or get CO poisoning...
  9. Check the ballast resistor and see if there`s 12v when you put the in ON, remeber it will last only a few secs if you don`t engage the starter, listen for the fuel pump relay to kick in when you put the key in on, check the relay basicly you must trace back the fuel pump wire all the way back to the relay perhaps but for now find out why there`s no power with the key on worst case scenario: a fried ECU... did you check for spark yet?
  10. Hook 1 cable to the 12v post, another to green wire that goes to the starter just make sure you use a switch that won`t accidently trigger itself with vibrations or one you can accidently trigger while workign on the engine
  11. i wish i had your awesome welding skills...
  12. i know this tranny is not used in any MJ or XJ and so doesn`t belong here but i bet someone here can shed some light on this questions - i read in another forum that this tranny, like the AW4, is electronicly controlled, and that when the TCM is disconnected or not working, the tranny will manually shift with the lever (D, 2nd and 1st) but no overdrive since it`s on a separate tail unit, is this correct? update: apparently if the tcm is off, you have R, D and 2 but not first, no automatic upshift or downshift... - the 44RE and 46RE are identical to the 42RE except for the bellhousing which is specific for 4.0, but these have better internals that can be swapped to raise the 42RE torque rating (i saw this on a dodge forum) i`m interested in this tranny and its posibilities because i have noticed that ZJs and WJs are everywhere and many are sold as scrap with many salvajeable parts (trannies and TCs, front axles, even sold as a package) but XJs are less abundant and people hardly ever throws them away unless they are damaged beyond repair... as always looking for options for my jeep addiction...
  13. all about sensors http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Engine/Basic_Sensors_Diagnostics.htm
  14. coolant / air temp sensors are ok?
  15. there are a lot of good things left on that truck get a good price for the entire truck, or is it only for parts?
  16. how does the ECU know how much air is getting in? only throu the TPS? how about the MAP? how come cycling the ECU on and off several times eventually fixed the problem?
  17. stop and drop that tranny before it leaves you stranded...
  18. there must be holes for the shifter you can uncover, is an MJ? all Mjs XJs have the holes for the 4wd shifter
  19. i found this MJ Production numbers: 1985: 29,245 1986: 33,386 1987: 43,070 1988: 43,718 1989: 25,311 1990: 9,576 1991: 5,188 1992: 952 XJ Production numbers: 1984 - 93,326 1985 - 120,328 1986 - 107,225 1987 - 139,295 1988 - 187,136 1989 - 207,216 1990 - 151,230 1991 - 151,578 1992 - 137,826 1993 - 144,961 1994 - 123,391 1995 - 120,234 1996 - 286,463 1997 - 258,958 1998 - 182,845 1999 - 186,116 2000 - 165,590 2001 - 120,454. but nothing about trims or engines... btw, the XJ do outsell the MJ by... a lot
  20. thanks, that`s what i was looking for...
  21. do any one knows a good site that has info about the changes that the AW4 had during it`s production? being the most common tranny behind the 4.0 and that you can buy a dozen for the price of one, it doesn`t hurt to know, things like Uses a separate ECU but can work in manual mode with minimal modifications removable bellhousing Handles like 400 lbs of torque in stock form but can go up to 600 with upgrades AMC 2.5 mates to a AW4 with a special housing but has weaker internals (upgradeable with regular AW4 parts) older has 21 splines, new ones have 23 stuff like that
  22. Suzuki samurai is a good suv, i had one, but has one mayor defect: it`s not a jeep anyway my wehole point was to cut behind the front door, the pic was just an example that with skill and patience we can make something as close a s posible as an MJ, with many XJs dying around there`s plenty of material to work with..
  23. Do anyone know how much 2.5 vs 4.0 Mjs / Xjs were ever made? so far i have only seen 2 4bangers and like a million 4.0s
  24. what i meant is they could implement something better than basicly an alarm clock and a message tha would say "Change O2 sensor you dumb@#$%" instead of "Emission maintence"
  25. which one you think is the best when it comes to strenght? durability? less known problems?
