  1. Should make the grave diggers happy. Won't have to dig as big a hole.
  2. Thinking the bed of a MJ would have more room for a delivery than the back seat of a car,XJ. Although that's probably where a good many conceptions took place at.
  3. Having a steel mill in town, there' a thriving business in scrap metal. The JY and scrap yards won't take a vehicle without a title. No title they charge you $5 to run a VIN search. Cut it up into several pieces and it's no longer a vehicle. It's scrap so no title needed. Think the fastest I've ever chopped one up was 15 minutes. A couple years back you could find junked, wrecked abandoned cars scattered all over the prairie and in the mountains. They're all pretty well cleaned up now. There's half dozen regular advertisers in the local paper wanting your scrap metal.
  4. OK. I got the dern thing. Was thinking about having a moderator delete the whole thing because I'm embarrassed. The previous owner had crossed 2 wires and I never caught it until an hour ago. But then leave it. It's a good lesson on never assume anything and especially DON'T OVERLOOK THE OBVIOUS! Apparently the ignition switch wasn't adjusted properly. He wired a push button into the starter circuit and got the IGN and SOL wires crossed. Anyway I got it straightened out, got the ign sw adjusted and it works OK now. I'd better sell it now or the GF will drive it and want it. It's a nice XJ and worth the trouble to get it going.
  5. Which socket? Not counting the Bat post, there are 3 wires from the relay. Ground, Ign and sol. I have checked all 3. good. I have bypassed them. Still no go.
  6. Sure glad he's not closer. I'd be tempted.
  7. and Cruiser54. About 2 weeks ago I picked up a 1986 XJ, 2.8, AX5, 4WD, 250K. $200. Drove it 30 miles to get it home with absolutely no problem so I figure it's worth $200, whatever. PO was so disgusted he would have gave it to me. Gratis just to get it out of his yard. Problem is the only way to start it is by removing the starter wire from the starter relay and touching it to the bat B+, or any hot spot. Inconvenient. Fires right off and runs great. PO had by passed the ign sw and installed a push button on the dash. It didn't work. I took 3 starter relays and checked all 3 in a '87 MJ. All 3 worked. Not one works in the '86. Checked the wiring from-to the relay. The ground id good. The wire going to the starter is good. The wire from the bat is good. Everything individually works. Does not work when all hooked together. Took a wire from bat+ direct to Sol. on relay. Nothing. Direct wire from bat neg to relay ground. Nothing. Any ideas? It's got nice rust dent free bod and clean interior and runs great so I kind a hate to part it. :dunno:
  8. Starter relay. The only time it should be drawing any current is when the key is in the 'start' position.
  9. Out of curiousity went out and looked. Found these. Also found two complete sets of four but without the Jeep logo.
  10. Other than a 8mm I don't have any ratcheting box ends. I do have a pipe wrench. Any way it's a moot point now. Got 'em both swapped and everything back together.
  11. Yep. I swapped both doors and front fenders and grill. Found some sticky veneer paneling at the home Depot I think will be a close match for the bed and tail gate. Got side tracked so it's not finished yet.
  12. Anybody got any tips on how to remove the left front shock without having to remove the brake master cylinder? I got it off and going after a new set now. Had to remove the BMC from the booster and was able to get a 3/8 deep well socket with a u joint on the nut enough to get it off. There's gotta be a easier way.
  13. Going thru the junk pile,,,er,,,spare parts bin and found these. Seems there was a discussion about mud flaps awhile back.
  14. Think he means the 2.8 V6
  15. Jim Oshel (aka jimoshel) '86 MJ Red, '86 MJ black, '87 mj White, '87 MJ white, '87 MJ grey, '88MJ Brown, '88 MJ White, '89 MJ grey. '89 MJ Blue, '90 MJ Grey. Pueblo Colorado And yes, they all run and are operable. Except for the '89 Blue one. The engine runs but the truck is inoperable. Did I mention, a dozen '84-97 XJ'S for donors.
  16. BINGO! But ya still don't have to like it.
  17. If the passenger wants to see where he's going, have him stick his head out the window. That's why they were designed to be rolled down. Could always get ambitious and remount the wipers above the windshield.
  18. HUH! Rust free? I've got a '87 manche in back that I will spot him 2 rust patches and still beat his rust bucket hands down for rust free.
  19. Pulling the pos plug, from the alt, should not kill the engine. The resulting spark will kill the alt. Try running a wire direct from the bat + to the alt output wire. Now pull the plug. See what happens.
  20. Also there is no knowing what mods any number of previous owners did to them. A 16 gal tank will only reach 3/4 of the way between the front of the bed and the rear wheel well. A 23.5 gal tank will occupy all the space between the front of the bed and rear wheel well. So far I have never seen a plate, tag or label giving a tank size. I have pulled over a dozen of them. Also the difference between short bed and long bed will effect tank size, placement. The long bed MJ will have a 16 gal tank standard. 23,5 gal optional. A short bed MJ will have a standard 18.5 gal tank.
  21. Check around some old farms and or farm and ranch supply stores as well as any well drilling, servicing outfits. The pressure tanks they use in wells comes in many different shapes and forms. I have one out back that I replaced on my well that I think would be perfect for the drum.
  22. I just swapped a '95 XJ track bar into a '87 MJ. The '87 was worn and sloppy. Perfect fit.
  23. That's what makes it fun, interesting?
  24. Get a big, black el cheapo cigar. They put out a darker smoke, easier to see.
