1987 Comanche rebuilt 2.5 lifter noise
Jtrux replied to novanut1964's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I recently installed a GM crate engine in my brother's truck. Rather than risk any premature failures due to poor lubrication, I went ahead and bought Amsoil Z-rod oil which is designed to be run in these older, non-roller engines. Oil is cheap, engines are not. -
Well, I screwed up. I honestly figured that just getting the rockers replaced and having those areas repainted would make me a happy man...and I was right, however, I failed to realize that having perfectly-painted, factor- colored rockers would look just silly alongside the heavily-worn, original paint. I went to go pay the bill and pick up the truck today and was just blown away the new paint looked and flat out disgusted with the rest of it. Just in case anyone cares, I never had aspirations of making this truck a show queen and really had no issue with the look of it, other than the rusted areas, but after seeing that shiny paint, I just told him to paint the rest of it. It will look way nicer than I originally intended but screw it, you only live once. I'll update again once it's completed and finally show some pics.

Here's the work in progress. The floor was rotten well up into the transmission tunnel so he had to hammer out some small panels to cover those areas up. Looks pretty good to me especially considering that it will be covered up with carpet. I can't wait to get this back and start driving it.

4.56 for sure.

I had a 302 I had envisioned installing in my MJ at one time. It should fit really well honestly. Front distributor makes firewall clearance a little easier than a Chevy and the short deck height makes hood clearance easy as well. Curious to see how it goes for you.

Where do I find these little doohickeys? Radiator grommets that's threaded in the inside. It's for a 2.5L also. And where's the best place to buy a new steering shaft?

To each their own.

Yea, the quote doubled when I wanted to go to a different color. Still not opposed to it but it is something to consider for sure.

Thanks. I should have mentioned that it's for a bench seat but I'm sure the answer is still the same.

Are there any aftermarket companies making foam kits for these or is that a custom job? I literally don't know the first thing about interiors.

Soooo, I am terrible at body work. I gave it the ol' college try and failed. In my defense, I work on it for an hour at a time and don't have a very good area to work in, so it makes doing detailed body work a little difficult. Coupled with the fact that I'm just not good at it. Anyways, I have reached out for some quotes on finishing it. Here's my current conundrum: do I get the whole thing painted after the rockers and floors are replaced or do I just have the guy shoot the areas that are seen and match it the best he can? I'm leaning towards getting the whole thing painted and if I do, the second question is do I keep with the original red or go with an all new color? More than likely I will wait until the last possible minute to make that decision. The first major thing to do once I get the truck back is get everything working. AC, heat, radio, etc. I'm daydreaming about an engine swap, as well. I have a 4.0/AX15 I could throw together and I also have a factory Dodge V8 AX15 bellhousing so a modern hemi swap is a possibility but I'm really leaning towards that little Cummins swap. From a practicality stand point, the 4.0 makes the most sense followed by the Cummins. Hemi is cool, but I don't know if I really want to deal with all of that. Let's get the truck sent off to the body shop first and then go from there.

Any key chains?

Just curious but how do you plan on having it terminate at the fender?
-
I really need to finish this.

You're doing a fine job, sir.

How's the fitment?

Has anyone been sucessful cutting out a rocker and replacing their MJ one? I have been fighting some affermarket rocker panels (fitment is terrible) so I'm eying my parts XJ's rockers but before I spend hours trying to carefully remove them, I wanted to investigate a bit. Thanks

I've been working a lot lately so this project has been slow going and will not be done for a while but at least I'm working on it. A few weeks back I started with drilling out all the spot welds. I picked up a set of Blair spot weld cutters and they worked really well. In a lot of instances, too well. I ended up punching all the way through in a few spots but it's to be expected, at least until I got the hang of it since this cutter was much more aggressive than others I've had. Tonight I was able to finish the last few spot welds, remove the door (necessary in order to gain more access to the outer rocker) and remove the outer rocker. Tomorrow if I have time I will fit the new rocker. Once I am able to get the rocker fitted, I will fill in those holes near the B pillar that I punched out unnecessarily since I had originally intended on removing much more of the rocker but found it to be too much of a PITA and the benefit wouldn't have been worth it since the metal wasn't rusted. Also, I'm going to clean up the inner rocker a bit and coat it with something. Not sure what. Probably won't go too overboard since it really isn't that bad to begin with. The floor will be a whole different animal. Looks like it's gonna be a giant pain in the a$$ but before I weld the new outer rocker in place I will get the floor fitted just in case it needs to be removed for any reason. After this side is done, I'll throw some primer on it and go to the other side. There isn't really much body work to be done besides this so as soon as both rockers and floors are done, I'll finish pulling the drivetrain and swapping in the new one (2.5 to 4.0).

I like my Power Probe. You can energize circuits and stuff like that. On a different note, did you remove the tank and clean it out. Based on that pic you first shared of your old pump, you might have lots of crap in that tank. My tank, sending unit and pump were all toast when I bought mine so it all got replaced. If that is in good shape, I would start with the basics like testing the relay (YouTube or Google) and working my way back. Sent from my LGLS992 using Tapatalk

battery and alternator and winch
Jtrux replied to ruralandalone's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You might be overthinking it a little. Get a manual hand throttle and stick it on the shifter and ramp the RPMs up a little during heavy winching or just do it manually with your foot if you're able to stay in the cab ( not always the case). Sent from my LGLS992 using Tapatalk- 16 replies

Do the stock bumper guards actually do anything?
Jtrux replied to RAH66's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
They are pretty useful actually. I've had them on other vehicles and used them to move a vehicle off of a congested road one time. I'd leave them. Sent from my LGLS992 using Tapatalk
