242 has a Full Time 4wd setting that is great for winter driving with patches of ice/snow on the road.

Was in Georgia for the CJ parts swap meet, and swung by the Birmingham Pull-a-Part before heading home to MO. Online search said they had one 1991 XJ. When I walked up, a glance told me the inside was completely gutted. Walked around the driver side and saw this. Went back for a wheel barrow, loaded it up and brought it home without even opening the tool bag. NP242

I should clarify, that I swapped to the later steel valve covers, and used the blue gaskets that came with those. I don't know if they were used from the factory or I just got lucky, but I see them from time to time. (this is why I have 3 cast aluminum covers laying around) I haven't used a blue gasket on the original cast aluminum valve cover or even know if one is made. I can get pics later.

I have 3 of these valve covers laying around also, if needed. The blue rubber coated Fel-Pro gaskets can be had in the junkyard for cheap. I've bought used valve covers and they didn't charge for the gasket... I've also had a yard let me have the gasket for free. I have had three running/driving 4.0s with these used valve cover gaskets and no leaks.

Sentinel Headlights Install
schardein replied to Blaine.D's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
It's definitely good info. I personally have never heard of a delay relay going bad. But I have heard someone say the one they added didn't work. Now I suspect it was this missing fuse. -

I did this to my MJ as soon as I got it, and don't remember having to add the fuse. -
LED dash lights that dim?
schardein replied to schardein's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No, it's plugged into the 4wd shifter console of my XJ and I'm not home right now. Can get one when I get home. -
95 Calibrated 115 MPH cluster / extended Idle
schardein replied to Strokermjcomanche's topic in The Pub
Also, my favorite feature of these police clusters- they are the only "blue" faced clusters for the 91 and up 4.0HO with electronic speedos that have a trip odometer. My original cluster: -

Also, notice the second pic of the extended idle panel, the plastic is gray instead of the more common white. I've seen a couple switch panels made of gray plastic like that, but do not know it's significance, if any. -
95 Calibrated 115 MPH cluster / extended Idle
schardein replied to Strokermjcomanche's topic in The Pub
I've pulled two of those clusters. One was from an XJ that had a column shifter like an MJ, so it was plug and play in my MJ. I didn't bother adding the extended idle switch, I have no need for it. As for plug and play, my understanding is there is a pin on the computer that gets either a ground or positive feed from the switch and that engages the high idle function. That pin is likely missing a wire and has a plug, so it will just be a matter of pulling the wire & pin from another XJ/MJ computer harness and adding it to yours. Then feeding the other terminal of the switch the proper ground or positive connection. I found a second cluster and the XJ it was in was a console shift. So I'm saving it in case I convert to column shift when I do my 4x4 conversion. Right now I am leaning towards keeping the console shifter. Neither of the XJs showed any signs of being a former police vehicle, other than the cluster. The one with the console shift did have seats with a smooth vinyl face, which I found unusual. I also noticed it made sliding in and out of the XJ much easier than fabric and thought that would be a benefit to police car where the driver might be getting in and out often. I posted about it and got several replies of people who had XJs with smooth vinyl faced seats. So I concluded it wasn't that rare. Every police cluster I have seen or seen pictures of had gauges, not idiot lights, but no tach. When I installed the police cluster, I matched the mileage on the speedo exactly to what was on my original MJ cluster, down to the tenth. -
So I found an LED dash light in the junkyard. It replaces the standard #194 bulb. It has a blue base, and sure enough is a blue LED. What surprised me, is that it dims with the dash light dimmer on the headlight switch. A big reason I hadn't converted to LED was I didn't want to lose the ability to dim the dash lights. I found some on ebay that look the same as my junkyard find, but when asked, they said they don't dim. Has anyone replaced the dash lights with LED and they are still dimmable? Source please? Thanks!

If it was the headlights alone, I would look at the connector that is located on the driver side header panel, below the air cleaner box. Every XJ/MJ I have looked at had bad corrosion at this connector which is for all the lights on the front end. But coupled with a random engine shut off, go with what Ohm and Eagle said.

As Jeremy said, it's worth it to get the SEM. Amazon carries it if you don't have another source. My local O'Reilly's with a professional paint section carries SEM color coat. A can goes a long way as it covers well. But two cans is probably a good idea if you are trying to do the whole interior and don't have a close, local source for another can. The closet thing to soft vinyl I have used it on is a dash pad on a square body Chevy. It worked very well. SEM has other products that complement the Color Coat. One is Vinyl Prep, it's purpose is to promote adhesion in vinyl. And Sand Free Adhesion Promoter, a similar product for other plastics. I used the Sand Free with good results on plastic door panels and interior pieces on a square body Chevy. I recommend you search the internet and read up on these products. Also, be prepared to spend some money, these fall in the category of professional refinishing products and aren't cheap. And don't forget before and after pictures!

Engine driven air compressor questions
schardein replied to ShortBox88's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The earlier system has a several adjustment bolts to loosen, then turn the adjustment bolt, which is below the pump with its head pointed sort of down and towards the inner fender. The newer system, loosen the idler pulley nut and turn the adjustment bolt, which is on the top sort of facing the water neck, easier to access and you can see it as you put the wrench or ratchet on it. Then tighten down the pulley nut. It's more user friendly. Almost like a mechanic designed it. Then later versions have the self adjusting tensioner... which maybe a WJ has? I don't know. The newer intake & p/s pump bracket swaps I did came from 1999-2001 XJs. First two pics are earlier style, last pic is the later style, the adjustment bolt is in the upper left corner, facing the corner of the pic. -
SEM color coat 15063 is a very good match to the maroon/burgundy interior. It's a great product that's made for and sticks well to the interior plastics.

Cutting the hole for the manual crank would not be difficult. Use your original panels as a template. Transfer your non-power door handle/manual locks panel to the new door panels. One thing to watch out for, if the doors panels have the Jensen Accusound speaker covers that stick out from the door, they will interfere with the manual window cranks. Ask me how I know. pic from google search for example. EDIT: the place to cut the panel for manual window cranks may even be marked on the back of the panel.

Engine driven air compressor questions
schardein replied to ShortBox88's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I can tell you that switching to the "horseshoe" style intake also requires using the corresponding power steering pump bracket. And, that bracket has a more user friendly belt adjustment than the earlier style. I have done this swap on three 1991 4.0HOs. The p/s pump brackets bolted up with no issues. So based off that, I think if you use the driver side accessories, the manifold would be required also. That's all I got, not familiar with the WJ setup. -

Woo boy. Take a day off and come back to this. I agree with "if you can't say something nice, remain silent". That is why I didn't respond to the visitor's post. But, I also believe in sharing knowledge and experience. When I was younger, I had a personal experience with "reporters". Sorry to anyone here in that line of work, but I don't trust them, period. Much later in life, I received professional training on how to deal with them. That was an eye opener. Now when watching interviews, it's easy to spot those that have had training. I enjoy Jeeps, and more often than not, enjoy talking to Jeep owners. I don't talk to reporters.

I missed the last one, but set up my ebay account to get emails and took advantage of this one. For my tow rig: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tru-Cool-Max-40-000-GVW-Transmission-Oil-Cooler-Low-Pressure-Drop-OC-4739-1/322508601056?epid=1617801934&hash=item4b1702b6e0:g:prgAAOSw9NdXrgLa
