Is it just me, or are the pics angled to minimize the appearance of that driver side dent? I also dig that color.

Front Leaf Spring Conversion
schardein replied to FancyManche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Interesting thread. I had death wobble on a 79 K5 Blazer before, so it can happen on a front leaf spring/solid axle setup. -
Maybe I misunderstood what you are looking for. You want the one piece headlight surrounds and one piece grill (later) setup, not the 2 piece headlight surrounds and grill with separate upper and lower trims? When you say 3 piece grill, I thought of the early style grill with separate upper and lower trim, "3 piece" haha.

no hurry. I currently don't have these listed anywhere else.
-
I've got the two piece headlight surround for the LH (driver) side if you decide to get pieces from different sources.

I have a set of 4x4 emblems (plastic), $15 and a 4.0HO emblem (plastic), but it is more of a satin silver instead of chrome, $10 And a set of gold 4x4 emblems (metal) from a Limited XJ, $15 and a gold 4.0HO emblem (metal), $10 all plus shipping. Or make offer on any combo.

Those don't look like the standard terminals I'm used to seeing in the bulkhead connectors- however most my experience is with Jeep CJ and 91+ XJ/MJ stuff. But, if you look closely at the width of those terminals, some look like the more common 1/4" wide male terminals which are series 56 Packard (Delphi, Aptiv) terminals. They happen to work with standard hardware store 1/4" male/female disconnects. However, some appear to be wider- which will be Packard (Delphi, Aptiv) series 59 terminals. At 5/16" wide, they are made to carry more current, and are commonly used in a few spots in the bulkhead connector, in a few spots in the ignition switch, and in the headlight bulb connectors. Again, the connector in the front of the picture doesn't look exactly like a Packard 56 or 59 male connector, but it might work. The part number for a 10-12 gauge male series 59 is 08917322, 14-16 gauge is 08905807. Can you confirm the width of the terminal you are wanting to replace? Also, I'm curious how those terminals lock into the connector? How are they removed?

For the average shooter, a base rifle is a great place to start, as others have mentioned. I have some experience with the M16-M4-AR15. You give up very little in the way of range or accuracy with the shorter barrel, and end up with a shorter, lighter, easier to handle weapon, especially if you think you might have to use it inside a building. If accuracy matters to you, the two biggest things to look for are a floated barrel and a good trigger. I use a Geissele brand (pronounced Guys-Lee) trigger, which used to be (and may still be?) the go to trigger for competitive rifle shooters in bullseye competition. That's basically what I was getting at. The pulley on an XJ/MJ application has a different bolt pattern than the center mounted fan (and pulley) of a YJ application. I never noticed, but apparently the height is different as well-- although I'm sure the difference is made up in the pulley offset, since there is no difference in the other accessories.

Sure, I'm aware of that. And I grew up with the weekly trip to the laundromat. But do most of these small homes actually have them?

Thanks for sharing that experience. I also served a career in the military, and was routinely abusing alcohol before I was of legal drinking age. I noticed about 5 years ago that even a few drinks left me with a hangover the next day, similar to what I might have after a Friday night and a case of beer when I was younger. Because of that, I rarely drink anymore. I always have a few the second week of Nov, and occasionally when friends are over, but I can count the number of times I drink a year on one hand.

I'm not saying I couldn't do it, but I have a lot of stuff. Yes, some if it I could throw away and never miss, but a lot of its serves a purpose. A lot of it goes towards making me self sufficient, and I would lose that capability if I was to give it up for a smaller space. I also like it when my friends and relatives come to visit. I have room for a couple to have a place to sleep with some privacy and their own bathroom. Wouldn't have that with a smaller place. I like doing my laundry whenever I feel like it. Do these small places have washers/dryers?

For about six years I lived in a ~180 sq ft "apartment" (barracks room) with a roommate not of my choosing. At another point, I lived in the same arrangement, but shared the head (bathroom) with two others living in the next room (the two rooms were joined by the bathroom). For a time, I also lived in a slightly larger room but with 2 roommates. In all cases, all my "stuff" had to be locked in a wall locker at all times, so that dictated how much stuff I could own. Later, I rated my own "room" which was pretty nice. I had my complaints of those times, but they had positive aspects as well. Fast forward, now I live in a medium sized house, with a large shop, on 30 acres. I pay a price (time & money) in utilities and upkeep, but it's worth it to me. If someone wants to live in a small house, go for it. It's really about what's important to you and what your personal situation is, and everyone is different, and situations change as you go through life.

Intermittent wiper upgrade
schardein replied to Comanche1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you have a manual trans, relatively easy to find a tilt column out of a manual XJ with intermittent wiper. If you have column shift auto, good luck. Extremely rare to find that in an XJ, easier to find a used MJ column shift with intermittent wiper. Or, like others have said, swap out the regular switch in the column for an intermittent one which is not an easy or cheap. -
All good points. I've found brand new rotors (and alternators, starters, radiators, pinion yokes, pinion seals, fan belts, Hella headlights, Dewalt 20v cordless sawzall, etc) in the junkyard before. I didn't have a good cell signal to look up year interchange, so I passed, which turned out to be the right call. Just added the height info for reference. I've got an aftermarket full aluminum XJ/MJ radiator in the shop (from the JY) but it is missing the AT cooler fittings and the threads aren't the same as factory. Be perfect for someone with a manual trans though. The heater fan switch, I was really looking for an undamaged connector, as it's common to see them melted. I'm not looking for those anymore. I've heard the ZJ sway bars interchange. The parts manual does show them as different part numbers. I've got the XJ 28mm bars on my XJ and MJ and it does make a noticeable difference, from both the 26mm bar that was on my XJ and the 24mm that was on my MJ. My "Junkyard notes" on my phone is about 4 times as long, I just narrowed it down to the XJ/MJ stuff.

I have to admit, I came here hoping for a radar system from junkyard parts. By no means all inclusive, but here are some notes currently on my phone, reminders of parts to remember to look out for. Some are for personal projects, some others are looking for, some are generally sought after, some is reference info in case I find a part and need to ID it. The last time I changed one, which was a while back, I cut a new gasket from a piece of foam tray liner for a Craftsman tool box.

I haven't researched the numbers, but I know that a water pump for a YJ 4.0 application has a different drive flange for the center mounted cooling fan. As opposed to the XJ/MJ 4.0 with an offset cooling fan that uses a pulley only on the water pump. I've dealt with this swapping an XJ engine into a CJ requiring a center mounted fan. Had to switch water pumps. Other than the drive flange (that the fan/pulley bolts to), the pumps are the same. If memory serves, the larger diameter flange is for the XJ/MJ.

I don't know what that is. Can you post a pic? Is it the one in the top picture of the first post?

I have my 1991 bench seat disassembled right now, and I don't see anyway to remove the pieces that hold the headrest. The cushion is molded around the frame and can't be removed to access that area. The plastic inserts that the headrests slide into are hard to remove. In my experience, they usually break the retaining tabs when being removed, unless you cut into the seat (bucket seat) and actually depress the retaining tabs while you work them out. I don't see any way to do that with a bench seat unless you cut into the foam.

Good looking 85 2 door XJ
schardein replied to 89 MJ's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Observations- Beautiful survivor Interesting that it has Selectrac emblems on the rear quarters instead of "Four Wheel Drive" which is usually seen, before they transitioned to the standard "4x4" emblems. But I'm sure it's correct as you can see the switch built into the shifter console for the original Selectrac setup, and you can barely see the "Hi-n-Lo" transfer case shifter indicator. I think that makes this very original survivor even more rare because of the drivetrain. I mean consider - 2door, rarer than 4door. 4cyl, rarer than 6. Selectrac, less prevalent than command trac. And it has a hitch on it (original??)(wonder if it has original trailer wiring?). I'd like to see a picture of the rear axle. No pictures of the undercarriage, which seems like an oversight in a cream puff like this, at this price point. Also curious what the axle gearing is. No mention of the headliner being replaced. I find it unlikely the original has survived this long. But the seller has been upfront about other changes, so perhaps it was replaced earlier, simply overlooked mentioning it, or it is original. I applaud the switch to fixed vent windows, alleviates potential leak issues (although I generally love wing windows, they aren't the best on the early XJ/MJ platform). If I had to nitpick, REALLY reaching here- the negative battery cable has one of the bolt on terminals (CRAP), should be replaced with an original cable. Underhood light is missing the bulb, may have been removed on purpose for photo. Air cleaner wing nut may be replaced with a regular hex nut, photo res isn't good enough to tell. I believe Jeeps are made to be driven, I could never own one like this. Hope someone buys it that can give it a good home in a climate controlled indoor storage. It belongs in a museum. EDIT- PS am I the only one who saves all the pictures from ads like this?
