New to forums and a new mj
dasbulliwagen replied to snowboard3r411's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Your existing computer and harness will not work with the MPI 2.5. You will need the entire engine wiring harness, computer and probably even the dash harness, You may want to search some different forum classifieds for the correct harness From an MPI 2.5 XJ and get it all so you can easilly swap everything over. I'm not sure if the MPI was ever used in the later MJ's otherwise that would work too. Good luck.. you may want to repost this in the tech section as well to get a better response. -
You need to repaint your grille now too. Maybe black out the chrome strips, That would finish off the new front end look.

Ive decided that any Comanche with a wagoneer front end should be coined a Comanche Limited. It is a model that never existed, but should have, and I intend to build mine that way. To a point... I'm not giving up my bench seat black interior yet. Ive been posting on here for almost a year now, and have kept you guys upto date with my progress, but until now have yet to start a build thread. I intend to try to dig up my old pic postings, or to take new pics to try to recreate my progress so far. I will be updating this thread with those as I get to do them, trying to go in some sort of chronological order.

And so we fall futher into the deep dark hole of addiction.

I almost feel sorry enough for you to sell you my rust free 86 parts truck..... ALMOST. It is basically a shell right now, and the bed is in rough shape due to dents, but I think it will be my next project after I'm done palying with my 87. Maybr a bed bob... that will take care of half the dented sheetmetal, and maybe prerunner style 2wd lifted. I hope you find something good when the time comes, you deserve that much for just providing us with this wonderful forum. Good luck Pete! -
I know I need to start a build thread, but here goes anyways. Went into work this morning just to get The MJ finished up so I could drive it back home. Its been sitting up at work for about two weeks now after the water pump went out again. So I figured I would take the initiative and convert to electric cooling fan while I was in there. Ive had a fan out of a WJ laying around for a while and it is about the size of a 2.5/2.8 radiator. I took the fan shroud from my 2.8 donor truck, and the fan shroud from a 2.8 XJ wagoneer and cut them up and epoxied peices of them around the fan to fit the radiator. This will allow me to reinstall the 2.5 fan and shroud later if needed without ruining them. I then wired it all to a fan controller. I had to make a spot in one of the heater hose lines to mount the temp sensor. It probably isnt in the best location right now, but it will work until I can figure something else out later on down the road. And during all this too, the battery went bad in my VW, so I pulled the battery out of the MJ, put it in the bug, which is being sold, and bought myslef a new Delco battery. Here is the fan I made up. Only the round center part is original to the fan. It has the right sides to two different 2.8 fan shrouds epoxied to it to make it fit over the radiator tightly, I then painted it all satin black. The temp sensor for the fan controller needed to be mounted somewhere, and the best spot I could see was in the heater bypass line to the intake manifold. I bought some brass plumbing fittings to mount the sensor in and cut the hose and clamped it in. The fan assembly mounted in place... it has at least a couple inches clearance between it and the water pump. Next was mounting the fan controller, and getting it wired up. It runs the fan by grounding it at the relay. You run the hot wire from the battery directly to the pos side of the fan, then the fan neg to the realy controller, a wire to the AC clutch power wire, a wire to ignition positve, and a ground. Plug in the sensor and it is done. And here it is all done and running! It seems to come on quick because of it being in the bypass hose, but I guess Id rather have it running than not. My next project will be installing the Wagoneer front end! And the the power window and lock doors from the same Wagoneer. What do you guys think about the project name "Comanche Limited"? As I plan to install the Wagoneer's "limited" badges during my build.

What brake mods w/ 8.8??
dasbulliwagen replied to ncgamedog's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I recently bypassed the rear load valve on an 88MJ and there was a noticeable difference under hard braking, the rear wheels would just about lock up on command. If your rear load valve is working alright, there is no reason not to stick with it until you can get an adjustable unit later on, if needed. To test it, you may want to unhook the rod, and tie the arm up in a much higher position, this will give you more braking to the rear wheels, to see what it will feel like for you. If you want to keep it with the 8.8 you could make an adjustable rod to adjust the rear brake proportion till you get it where you like it. -
I too have to say that I'm impressed that this hasnt gone south on us. Everything Ive seen has been civil and I have no complaints as to how its going. It might be too, that there are so many of us godless heathens on here! :brows:

Dual Diaphram Brake Booster
dasbulliwagen replied to HellCreek's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm not sure that there are any that are direct bolt on with no modifications. With minor mods a late model Cherokee system, or a WJ Grand Cherokee 99-04 boosters have been made to work. I even heard a while back that Crown Auto was working on a kit with the WJ booster to bolt into early Cherokees and MJ's, but I have heard nothing about it lately. The mods have been documented here and you should be able to find something with a search. Good Luck. ... Oh yeah.. JP magazine did the WJ swap in the october 08 issue. I Have that in the plans for myself as well. -
Just a few questions.
dasbulliwagen replied to Tri_X_Troll's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Your dome lights working probably has nothing to do with the fuse box. You need to pull the dome light out and clean all the contacts with some fine sandpaper, the roller part in them is also a contact and will need to be cleaned also. Also check the door switches to make sure they are not sticking in the door closed position and that the springs in them are working properly and that they are adjusted properly in relation to the door jamb. I went through all that on mine and they have worked ever since. -
Just a few questions.
dasbulliwagen replied to Tri_X_Troll's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Your rear axle gearing is most likely 4:10 but will need confirmation. My 86 2.8 Ax5 4x4 parts vehicle came with 4:10, the AX4 models usually came with 3:55. And Ive seen for sale performance intakes and carbs for the Chevy 3.4 litre from a camaro, I think they mae headers for it too, but you have to look it up as a 3.4, which willbolt right in with all the 2.8 accesories in place of the 2.8 with minor modifications. -
Another reason that I know that there is no god. I work with an animal rescue group and have specialized in rescuing and adopting cats and kittens. We have not worked with them much lately because we are busy with our little girl, but in the course of 5-6 years, we have put through and adopted 30-40 cats and kittens through our home, no more than 4-6 in the house at a time. And every time one of those sweet kittens gets sick with an incurable disease, and I have to put that kitten to sleep, it just reaffirms to me that there is no god. Why would an all knowing all loving god do such a thing to such a poor innocent cat. And that goes for every bad thing in life. There is just soo much of it, too much to be explained by "the devil made me do it". There are too many supposedly good god fearing people that do so many bad things, it can't all be explained like that. To me there is only one thing cruel enough to make any sense of why all this bad stuff happens....MOTHER NATURE. And the term "mother" is not used to make it out like a higher being. Only nature is cruel enough to allow all the bad stuff to happen, and I accept that, because it makes sense. There is a way of things in nature and killing and whatnot is an integral part of that, and we humans are no different. Its just sad that common sense really has no place in religion... or politics for that matter, but thats another subject I am not getting into.

Youll have to let us all know next time autofair comes around if we want to make a Comanche showing. It wouldnt be a big deal at all for me to drive across 49 down to Charlotte. I may even have all my Wagoneer sheetmetal done by then too, and the 4x4 conv. ! There are a bunch of guys on here from the Charlotte area. We could make a pretty good showing if we all went!

New to forums and a new mj

2.5 litre 4 cylinder with throttle body fuel injection, AX5 5 speed transmission, although my 1987 came with a 5 speed shift knob and a 4 speed transmission, Dana 35 rear axle ( most likely candidate ) Good luck! -
I had a set of 4, gave three of them away, and am keeping the fourth to use as a full size spare. Sorry! And those are supposed to have a stainless steel beauty ring on them too.

That is the stupidest thing Ive ever seen! But Jeep hotties was pretty good!

If you really need god to remind you to be good, how good of a person are you to begin with? And Christmas isnt about religion anymore, it is a commercial holiday with almost no connection to Jesus anymore. Even though I don't beleive, I still celebrate Christmas as a family holiday that brings everyone together, and that in itself can't be bad. The same goes for Easter, Valentines, and St Patricks days and whatever else I may have missed.

I was brought up in a good family values home, but my parents didnt go to church although they beleive, and they never taught me anything about it... so I was left to figure it out on my own. And the only thing that ever made any sense was science and evolution. The thought that there was a higher being that no one has ever seen or could prove the existence of was just another fairy tale with no basis in reality. I know that Jesus was a real person, but did he really do the stuff they said he did? I don't think so. The bible, or any religious text for that matter is a book of fairy tales for the sole purpose of teaching morals, and giving uneducated people a way to explain things they don't understand. And I'm not even going to go into the huge religious money racket that various churches have going. That is one more reason to not beleive. And no one will ever change my mind on the subject. Thats another thing that bugs me... people who convert! If you truly and absolutely beleive in something, there should be no way at all that anyone could change your mind and make you beleive something else. If you can convert from one to another, then how well did you beleive to begin with? I usually keep this to myself in order to keep peace and not be bothered by people who think I am wrong. You don't see atheists going around trying to get more people to be atheists. I just want to live my life knowing I am a good person, and when I die, maybe a tree somewhere will get some good nutrition. I know there are groups out there that have a religious explanation for everything that happens, and when I see it, it just looks like they are grasping at straws trying to prove that everything in their life has not just been one big lie. Its sad really. Think what you want to think about me, but all I want to do is live and let live. I beleive what I want to, and you beleive what you want to, I really don't care as long as you don't try to force your opinion on me. Let the hate mail begin.

Vibration at high speeds
dasbulliwagen replied to jmartinez1228's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Could be a bad U joint too, or bent driveshaft. Check the rear driveshaft and the front for that matter for looseness or play at the U joints and replace the joints as necessary. Set parking brake and put trans in nuetral and reach under and wiggle the shafts back and forth, there should be no visible movement between the shaft, joint and pinion. -
NIIIIIICCCEE!!!! I wouldnt call that Jazz, though. Not sure what to call it except NIIICCCE!

Donor Engine Storage
dasbulliwagen replied to 64 Cheyenne's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have a VW Jetta engine Ive had stored for probably 10 plus years now. I did nothing to it before pulling it. I just go to it every once in a while and roll it over by putting my foot on the flywheel. It has yet to lock up, but anything you can do to lube the cylinders would be good. Like a previous poster said, pour some oil through the carb while running and then more in the spark plug holes after would be great, then roll it over bey hand to make sure it is well dispersed. It will smoke like a mother when you finnally do install it though! -
Another Gear Ratio Question
dasbulliwagen replied to glundblad's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Same amount of torque at the engine, but the amount of torque available at the wheels would be more with the 4:10 due to the gearing difference... it actually should be more torque at the wheels in all gears just given the engine will have to turn more times to make up the same distance... does that make sense? -

I got bit by one of those cops while vacationing in West Virginia. And while writing me the ticket, he then goes into a lecture about how I'm gonna get more tickets buy guys just like him, in other small towns, because (not in so many words) I am a menace to society.... sitting there in my car with my wife and her family, spending our hard earned dollars in his town....never again! I live in a town of maybe 15-20000, and Id bet we don't have many more than 7 cops. Stupid! -
I know that those GM tilt mechanisms are rebuildable, but we don't know if that really is your problem, could have a bent wheel or a bent steering shaft, or all of the above. You might try finding one from a junkyard Cherokee with similar options in similar year range after making sure it doesnt have the same problems your has. I'm sure someone on here could help more about the tilt mech rebuild if thats all you need. Good Luck!

another brake question?
dasbulliwagen replied to 90eliminator's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
We had this problem on the air cooled VWs I worked on before, the caliper/wheel cylinder would be fine, but the rubber brake line going to them would be swollen inside and not release pressure, and I agree on the slide pins, and the also look at the caliper mount at the top and bottom where the caliper rests on it, sometimes you can get wear spots there too that could cause problems, Take a grinder and grind them smooth if you see any indentation there.
