If you do get a 4.7 get a 2004. The later the engine the less trouble it seems. It looks like there are plenty of 03 and 04 HO’s on car-part so that means the engines are outlasting the bodies.

Well bought at $3,700. You got yourself a nice ride.

You can bolt a Dana 300 to an AX15. They are much shorter than a 231 probably 6 inches or so. Trouble is that an AX15 is probably at least 6” longer than a T176 or T150. Can anybody get a measurement of the length of a T176 from the front of the bellhousing to the center of the ujoint in the output yoke. I have both AX15’s and Dana 300’s and give you an overall measurement.

Look up five for fire for using a stock 4.0 HO injection setup. There isn’t that many wires to a 4.0 HO. Or, you could put a Clifford 6=8 2 or 4 barrel manifold on it and run a ford 2100 or 4100 carb and put an hei distributor in it and have even less wires. Use a GM one wire alternator too.

4.0 HO Water pump replacement
FrankTheDog replied to Motorhead X's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The heater hose pipe is NPT thread which is tapered. I did a water pump this past weekend and it had a few threads showing when it was as tight as I felt was right. Don’t force it any more, it will split your pump. The fan shroud is really hard to take out with out breaking it with the fan still in place, it does not want to go past the fan clutch. If you take the radiator support off you may be able to get the shroud past the clutch. At this point I cut a notch in the shroud to clear the clutch. A little wider than the clutch and almost the full depth of the shroud. Remove electric fan. Power steering pump I remove the 2 bolts holding it to the pump and one to the block. Move pump out of the way. While power steering pump is out of the way take time to service the adjuster in the bracket. (This was on a 1999 so yours may be a little different.) Take water pump off clean mounting surface and get it dry. I use permatex tac a gasket in the spray can and spray the block and water pump. Make sure you have the gasket lined up correctly before setting it on the pump. Same with lining up the pump with the block, put two bolt in 180 degrees apart and start them with out drawing pump against block, start remaining two bolts the bring them all up finger tight then torque them down. Connect hoses and reassmble power steering bracket and pump ant put fan and shroud back in. Fill radiator and overflow tank. Here is what I do to make sure the cooling system is full. I drive up a steep bank in my yard and make sure the radiator neck is higher than the rest of the system, this lets all the air out of it.Let the engine get up to temperature on the gauge, you should see where the thermostat opens and the temp drops briefly then starts going up again. Shut it off and let it cool for an hour or more. Once cool top it off again and bring over flow tank to the correct level, take it for a short drive to get it up to temp then park it on level ground and let it cool off again. Check levels once more and add if needed but probably won’t. I have done it this way over a half dozen times all with good results. I have seen way more blown head gaskets and cooked engines with new water pumps on them than I have without. -
Mike, have you received the key yet?

Nice meeting you Mike. My parts are sold.

Yeah, I’m the 2nd, 4th 8th and 10th owner of it. I owned it from 209k until 395k and got it back at 425 and had it to 455 then got it back again at 457. I’m not parting with it again.

Wasn’t mine, daughters boyfriend swiped his grandaddies bus and went to Bonaroo music fest with her and several other knumbskulls and it died in the rain in Knoxville. Garage told him it was a blown motor. His folks told him he couldn’t leave it down there so he had to sell some of his prized possessions and haul it back. Knumbskull me offered to do it for him. (For the adventure) We get to Knoxville and UHaul wouldn’t rent me a dolly because of the weight difference. I had no idea they weighed so much. So we went to a music shop that rented UHauls and told the dude we were towing an 81 Rabbit and went on our merry way. All the bus needed was a cap and rotor and plugs and wires. Blown motor, nope. It cost him $1000 to get it back with storage and my cost. I just hauled it to our local VW expert and his cost was under $500. I still have that XJ, it has 457K on it now with the original engine.

Proof of my insanity. Do not try this at home folks.4500 lb VW + 500? Lb dolly behind 3600? Lbs of 1998 XJ. The 4.10 gears and manual trans plus the load range E tires helped. Knoxville TN to Winsted CT. Never went over 50 mph stayed mostly just above 45 minimum speed on the interstate. 30 mph up the hill on I-81 between Pine Grove and Rausch Creek. Good thing that was around 1:00 am.This one jackknifed me going around a downhill corner in the rain. I managed to drive out of it without any damage or ending up in the ditch. The vehicles were nearly 90 degrees to each other. Dragged this one from Dale City Virginia to Winsted CT with no engine or transmission in it so it death wobbled at anything over 41 mph. Imagine driving up I-95 at a max speed of 40 mph on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. 7.5 hour trip became 14 hours. I never got pulled over on these or several other hauls.

I like the startled look of the one with the big round headlights.

CJ 5 weighs a lot more than a CJ2. MJ weighs a lot less than a K20. No comparison. I’ve flat towed a lot with to light of vehicle and you have to be very careful.
-
If it rains slow down or even better stop because it’ll push the rear of that MJ right around like nothing on a turn. There is no weight in the back of an MJ.

I have two manual doors with good manual mirrors. The door cards are a little funky from storage but everything is there and in decent shape. They are dark green and off a 96 XJ so they will work without modifications. I also have a decent tailgate too. $150 I’ll pm you pictures tomorrow, no time today. I’m in northwest CT near the Mass and NY borders. You can pick them up or I’ll meet you half way. I’m 35 minutes from I-90 in Lee exit 2. $100 picked up. $150 halfway. $400 for tailgate and doors delivered to you in Glens Falls this weekend.

It’s funny, big furry spiders don’t bother me, but I can’t stand the non furry kind.

XJ and MJ jacks and wrench are the same, the jack handle for MJ’s is shorter but you can still use an XJ handle. The strap is just a rubber strap with D rings on the ends.
-
You do need the YJ/ZJ/TJ pulley to use that pump. Belt position will be the same with the ZJ pulley as on an XJ. I don’t know how close the pulley/ fan mount will be to the radiator.
-
93-98 ZJ pump is same as 91-98 Wrangler pump, it has a longer shaft so that the bearings can be farther apart to support the shaft because of the fan being mounted on it. I don’t know if the 99-04 WJ is the same as the 99-06 TJ.

75 FT lbs seems awefully light. If I remember correctly fsm says 120. My local flatr8er tightens them to 140 with a torque wrench in 3 stages. Last stage they go around 3-4 times. They’ve never had a wheel come off. Lol
-
These all said 3.55 on the rears. The 96 and 98 with abs had D35’s. The 98 without had a C8.25.
-
These were all stock geared automatics.

91 HO has same pilot bushing size as renix. 92 and up have all the same size. If you want to use later model transmissions you need 92 and up. 96-98 seemed the most powerful by the seat of my pants than all others. But not all of them. I had 2 98’s and 1 96 that felt like they had 15 or more hp than identically equipped 92-00 XJ’s.
