painting alum turbine rims
glundblad replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't understand why so many Jeep owners ruin stuff. Then call it an improvement. -
I doubt it is a dns issue. DNS servers either resolve or they don't regardless of the load at the desktop. Your problem sounds like they are occurring on your desktop. I tried googling your model and it doesn't show up on gateway's web site. Google lists an article posted in 2009 which makes your computer at minimum 5 years old. I am not familiar with AMD processors which your laptop apparently has so I can't comment on performance but I suspect you are running too much stuff on it. Your photos have nothing to do with it at least not directly. This is all conjecture but your virus scanner could be the culprit. Sometimes, they are set up to batch scan the entire system on a boot up. Or, they are configured to update virus signatures, then perform a full system scan after the updates are performed. On smaller systems, that can be frustrating. Another problem is perhaps your virus scanner hasn't been updated for years and you are running old signatures. Now you are running batch scans upon reboot that produce no valid results and (theoretically) you have Trojans and/or spyware running sucking up resources. You could also have worthless crap software running such as the goggle task bar. Probably the best thing you can do, other than taking it in to someone is to perform some basic troubleshooting on your own. Trend Micro has a tool called house call . I suspect they still do. It is a web based virus scanner that you can use as a one time application to check things. You can run that and see what happens. You can also uninstall Norton and see how it acts (be prepared to install something else right away). Finally, you can look at performance monitor and see what processes are eating up CPU.

What you describe doesn't make sense (I am not saying I don't believe you though) Windows 7 is a good thing. It is the most reliable OS Microsoft has so far. Make sure you have 4gb at minimum. Unfortunately, if your computer has started acting up (been infected etc), no matter what anyone tells you, there are no cures for that other than a clean wipe and reload of the os. "Computer experts" will tell you that if you install "bs software xyz", it will fix it. But you have no way of knowing other than it doesn't crash in the same spot like it did. One thing I always make sure I get when I buy a new computer is a restore disk. Most of the crappy pcs you get from Best Buy/dell,etc come with a "restore partition" which is very helpful in all situations except those times when you actually need to use them. Get the cd's. If you can't, get the computer from CDW. They cater to business rather than us home users that don't know crap. I would consider taking it to a computer shop and showing them what it is doing. Lean toward wipe/reload if it is acting up. And tell them so. Tell them you don't want to pay for an Easter egg hunt. But make sure you tell them you want the windows cd's if you don't have them along with the virus scanner. Of course, remember, you will loose everything on your hard drive if you wipe/reload so copy your files to a usb drive first. I assume you are infected with a virus but I don't have any way of knowing for sure. While I don't fully understand why, unfortunately, it is still very easy to get infected. A way to minimize it is to create a separate account on your computer that has minimal rights to do anything. If it doenst have the ability to install software, it can't plant a virus on your computer (at least it is a bit for difficult that is). Hope this helps. Gary

I also really like the factory knob. But it is very frustrating that it doesn't last. A couple years ago, mine worked loose and I needed to tighten it up but I didn't. I took it in for repairs and the tech turned the knob to tighten it. Big mistake. That busted the plastic inside. The main thing to remember is if it gets loose, tighten it at the bolt. Never turn the knob. That advice alone will double the life from 6 months to 12. Until then, someone please offer advice on a factory look?

Every time I see a new post in it, I feel like I must be more important than a typical post. I don't know why I feel that way. It never is.

I have an '87 with the manual ba10 and 235 tires. I have the factory 3.07 gearing which I always planned to convert to 3.73. 3.07 is way too high so I frequently need to treat it like a 4 speed on the highway. I often wondered if an automatic would have hidden that sin a little better or made it worse. But I am a poor judge too. My daily driver is a ford raptor and it has 400+hp so the experience is a little different between the two trucks. I love the manual transmission in the MJ. I wish the raptor had it.

Fog Light Question for the older folks
glundblad replied to glundblad's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If this is directed toward me, I am absolutely interested. Let me know what you want for them. As a side note, since the comanche site was moved to a new platform a couple of years ago, I have found little incompatibilies along the way. I have found the best way to fix them is to use google chrome rather than IE. Email address is garylundblad@hotmail.com Hope that helps. -
Fog Light Question for the older folks
glundblad replied to glundblad's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Where are you seeing "ROL"? In 1987 through February of 1988 AMC/Jeep was in partnership with Renault, a French company. Marchal is/was a French company. AMC used ONLY Marchal for fog lights on all their vehicles during that time period. The off-road lights on the rollbar of my '87 MJ are KC Daylighters, and I'm certain they are factory equipment. I'm only the second owner, and the original owner was an older gentleman who just drove it, he didn't modify anything. Wow just sitting here drinking my morning coffee and saw this post and thought hmm. This looked familiar. Very old post. Yes my fogs (installed on the bumper) were ROL. The glass lens had ROL embossed on them. My truck was bought in the summer of '87 off the lot. It is possible it was built before the Marchal agreement. My comanche of the month photos show the ROL lights with the familiar Jeep caps. I see those caps quite regularly and always assumed they would also work with Marchal 750s or the later "Blazer type" but I don't know for sure. On the ROL lights, the chrome metal behind the bulbs turn to ashes just by the sound of rain in the forecast. I am sure the Marchals are better lights by a factor of 10. I have had them turned on a few times but I don't want the bug splat to wear out the cat stickers so I tend to leave the caps on. -
MJOTM - August, 2014 - 1989 Eliminator's Eliminator
glundblad replied to neohic's topic in Comanche of the Month (MJOTM)
That is nice. I agree with Don. Maybe a minor lift but that is all. These trucks in stock condition are becoming very rare. BTW, Factory fog lights? They look like ROLs. Dang I have been looking for those for years. Do you park in dark areas at night? -
I am sorry Pete but I love the gasoline approach. As far as entertainment value, it beats a bug light any day. :rotfl2:

$3000 for a non driving 4 cyl? I don't think a drivable 4 cyl is worth that.
-
Paul, Just think. If you can get it running, you could actually drive it to the car wash. Without a tow rope.

Full Size Temporary Spare Tire
glundblad replied to Strokermjcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't know how helpful this is but I bought my '87 new. It came with a full size spare and rim. Both were exactly the same as what was installed on the truck. 225 wranglers. I wanted the factory look too so in order to stick with wrangler RWL tires, I went with Wrangler Silent Armor but It had to be 235. The unrestored photo in the link below shows what 225's looked like. Those are not the factory tires but they are factory size. The factory spare tire and rim are visible on the floor toward the front. I don't recall personally if all trucks were like that but mine had LSD/D44 which was referred to as "Optional heavy duty axle". I assume it required a full size spare. 235 still looks factory to me. 225 looked a little undersized IMO. Also on that same link is the factory window sticker. It doesnt list anything about a full size spare as an option. It mentions something about 5 rims. BTW, Kudos for keeping it stock. http://comancheclub.com/topic/20543-comanche-of-the-month-mar-2010-glundblads-1987/ -
Coating Under Truck. What Is It?
glundblad replied to 350MJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I couldn't tell exactly what you were scraping on but they sprayed some undercoating stuff on the frame when new. They didn't do a very good job of applying it. I would say 40% coverage was the best they did. That is even a little optimistic. Personally, I thought they sprayed it simply to subdue the bright frame. I remember looking at new comanches and thinking how unusual it was that the frame was painted the same color as the body. The undercoating sort of toned it down a bit. -
When I was young, there was one car brand that stood out among all brands as being the worst, most unreliable on earth. Fiat. I just don't know.

Not me. I don't have television.

Ok Paul. I have been spying on you. I see that you haven't logged in since June 30. Did we loose you again? BTW, thanks for the black console and black seats.

Comanche Cab Corners Question

I think I paid $40 and they cut them. -
I wondered what ever happened to you. Welcome back.

If you really want to get them acclimated (or indoctrinated), Who's Next by The Who is a sure bet. If they like that, make them listen to Quadraphenia. It may take them 2 states to like it but once they are used to it, I am sure they will love it. It's probably one of the best classic rock albums of all time. Great Lyrics, great bass and probably Keith Moon's greatest work.

I don't know if this would help future paypal purchasers but I have taken my checking account out of my paypal account and use a credit card only. Then when I pay via paypal, it draws from my credit card. Then (presumably), if someone sticks me, I can contact my credit card company and withdraw payment.
