  1. Some guys just like to be different. :D
  2. My 90 has a 4.0/AX-15 with 31" tires and I had a 3.55 Dana 44 sitting in the garage so I found a matching 3.55 front and went with it. 3.55s should be close enough to work just fine. Truck still needs a floor so I haven't exactly done any road testing yet. But back in the day (when it was just a lowly 2wd) my 88 had 30s with 3.07s and it sucked, then I swapped in the 3.55 Dana 44 and the truck drove great. :D
  3. There are others out there making an attempt, like the Nissan Xterra (rear locker, Bilstein shocks, 32" tires, etc) and if you can resist clicking on the chrome mirrors, grille and recovery loops, you can get the H3 with some impressive gear. To me, IFS is not unto itself a deal breaker if it can be bandaided with gears, lockers, cool engines or bigger tires. :D
  4. Yeah, fuel economy standards and crash worthiness have a way of changing what companies can produce. Out of curiosity, in you guys' humble opinion, where does the new Rubicon rate in that list of classics? Or the new Power Wagon? Or how about the newer SuperDutys with high-pinion coil-over Dana 60s up front? How about Dodge's equivalent? What about the new diesels pushing 700 ft-lbs of torque? It's fun making fun of the Compass, but don't live too much in the past. It's not always all it's cracked up to be. Front drum brakes suck, 260 U-joints suck, and most of the really tough rigs from back in the day were indestructible because they had anemic engines and/or tiny tires. Don't kid yourselves, the best examples of today's engineering could walk all over the old-school technology of yesteryear. There are just too few examples of it, and more and more of the wussy 4x4s.
  5. The 5.9L was only available with an auto in Dakotas (as part of the R/T package). And only as 2wd too. Durangos could get a 5.9/auto with 4wd (also R/T).
  6. AX-15 ain't going to survive behind a Hemi. :brows:
  7. One more reason why leasing can actually be better than buying. :D After 2 or 3 years it's their problem. :brows:
  8. Off the top of my head I think the firing order is 1,5,3,6,2,4
  9. It can be rough trying to organize all the different schedules (both work and project status). Trust me on that. If anyone wants to try and organize a run, I say go for it! :D Research the location you want to go see (types of trails available, places to sleep) and then make your thoughts known to the community. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. But you'll never know until you try. :brows:
  10. Also, there's nothing that says those sequences were shot in the order you saw them in the film. If you burn your driving rig, you can't exactly re-shoot an earlier scene. I have a feeling that this type of "swap" happens far more than we know. We just happened to pick up on this one. :D
  11. I saw a couple zooks at the badlands a couple years ago. Mild lift with maybe 31s and very little sheetmetal left. I wish I could find the pics of the craziness they were attempting (and they were usually succeeding).
  12. AFAIK it was standard in 89. Only 86 has the baby tank available.
  13. Could be a leaky injector dumping too much fuel into the engine.
  14. The 5.0 from a mustang cobra would make for a sweet speedster. :D
  15. If you're keeping the same engine and trans, you'll just need to pick up your truck's year pilot bearing. Since you're dropping the tranny anyway, it's a good idea to replace the pilot bearing. You may need a pilot bearing removal tool (the auto parts stores around me loan them out).
  16. Been there, done that. It's on the to-do list. :( I was thinking of adapting the older-older style with the push-button switch (like my 86 has).
  17. I think he's trying to mate a H.O 4.0L with the older Peugeot transmission. Yes? Guys, did anyone ever figure that one out? :hmm:
  18. And some Jeep guys are too. A-holes are everywhere and drive all sorts of different rigs.
  19. Just to mix it up a bit to show how much the variables matter, I absolutely HATED the 31" BFG AT KAs that were under my Dakota. The rubber seemed to be way too hard and provided little traction in slippery conditions on pavement. Loved the older generation BFGs that used to be under my MJ though.
  20. That would limit flex and drop the rear all of 1/2". Using 2wd MJ leaf packs would net 1" less lift (depending on the condition of the leaf packs in question). Or you could make a bastard pack from the 4wd leafs and Explorer leafs to lessen the overall lift.
  21. That's an unfair statement. As if all Toyota fans are like that.
  22. Tack-weld the perches on with your welder and seek out a friend or business to burn them on with a more powerful unit. It's about as easy a weld as anything and really, really hard to screw it up. :D And this is just my opinion, but an extra inch or two of ground clearance probably won't keep you from high-centering. At least that's been my experience. :(
  23. Just checking. :D Don't want to hear about you winning the darwin award or anything.
