Another choice is to go with a grand wagoneer front 44 (drivers side diff) and mate that with the rear Dana 44 from a ~95 Isuzu Rodeo or Honda Passport. the Isuzu axle comes with disk brakes and 4.30 gears. Then you just need to regear the waggy axle to match and swap the Isuzu pinion flange to a U-joint flange. The Waggy axle is already leaf sprung, so it's a simple task to slice the mounts off for a clean slate. If I were in your shoes, I'd avoid the 78 Ford front axle. Those cast-in mounts are not fun to deal with, although leaf spring mount will be a bit easier to attach than a 4-link. And leafspring frontend conversions are no picnic either. How much of a project are you looking for? Plan on custom steering links no matter which axle you go with.

last time my 86 wouldn't start it turned out to be corrosion build up at the power wire leading into the coil. :( but fuel issues are more common after sitting.

many of our members are posting from a cell phone. :D be sure to grab the little bracket that holds down the rear of the center console. And the 99 seats don't exactly bolt right in. You'll need to fab some stuff up. Depending on what got smashed, I'd also try to grab the mirrors, the door seals, seat belts, front axle shafts, obviously the front grille, and maybe even the t-case.

first gen Cherokee? Are you referring to the fullsize Cherokee/grand Waggy? Yes, you will still need custom steering rods. You are swapping in a completely different axle here, everything will need to be custom.
