MJ Still Running Cold
oldrusty replied to summerinmaine's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had never seen one fail engaged but apparrently it does happen. We tested my brothers by pulling it off and setting it outside in the cold( temp was about 15 degrees). When we brought it inside the hub was very easy to turn ( fan would basically freewheel if you clamped the hub in the vise). We kept checking the surface temp of the hub with my laser thermometer as it warmed up. When it got up to about 70 degrees it got very hard to turn ( fan was engaged). We tested it like this 3 more times and each time got the same results. He figure might as well replace it ( everything else in the cooling system was new) and afterward the engine temps are within 10 degrees of what they ran before he started having problems.Like I said his gas mileage improved improved noticeably wich would make sense if the fan was engaged basically all the time. -
My 4wd 5 spd mj had 3.07 gears from the factory.

MJ Still Running Cold
oldrusty replied to summerinmaine's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I just went through the same thing with my brothers 2000 ram. Couldnt figure out why the engine wasnt getting up to temp. He had the rad replaced at the dealership where he works and after that it seemed to be over-cooling. After replacing the thermostat )and then that after market thermostst with a new mopar one) I figured out that the clutch fan on the engine was bad. According to dodge the factory fan should come in at engine temp of around 180 degrees. His was kicking in at 65 degrees. We replaced the fan and his engine temps are back to running right about where they should be( gas mileage has improved quite a bit to). -
Ive been contemplating a liberty seat swap to replace the broken down buckets in my mj. I just found out today that a local jeep only salvage yard is having a seat sale and selling liberty ( among other models) seats for $50.00 each. Gonna take a ride out there this weekend.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I am keeping the faith but man its been tough the past few days. I am glad to still be working when so many arent. I'm also thankful that the wife and I have been able to resist the urge to spend the past couple years. Like I said her xj and my z71 are both paid for so I can absorb the pay cut. It just means there won't be as much "play money" as there has been. The wife still has a good job with good benefits and I can make a good bit of money hustling side jobs if I have too. On a positive note I have an interview with a local company that installs data cables and fiber optic on March 16.( boss was leaving this afternoon when I was there for vacation in the bahamas)....... I decided today that I'm going to model myself after my mj.........no matter how much you beat on it or how bad you neglect it it just keeps on plugging along never complaining....

Its been on hell of a week for me.... Found out last Tues that the wife had a miscarriage.(would have been our first child). Had to take a day and a half off work over the weekend to be with her at the hospital. Was looking forward to getting back to work today and trying to get things back to normal. Then I find out at lunchtime that the company is probably eliminating my department and contracting the work out to an outside source. I have the option to bump back down to a lower job but at a $3 an hour pay cut and a loss of 2 weeks vacation.......GREAT....... My boss was really apologetic ( wasnt his call corporate pencil pushers are cutting costs) and told me I could have any shift or days off I wanted.( I would technically be the #1 guy on the senority list).....Its good to know that I still have a job but really sucks to go backward after almost 11 years with the same company.....The wife and I are in better shape than alot of people as all our cars are paid for and we only have 1 mortgage on the house but a cut in pay means alot off summer projects may have to get put off an other  year.....I told the wife today I'm not sure whos testing me with all this crap in my life at once but I hope it ends soon........... .thanks for listening.......rant off

I have a buddy that used to wheel a 77 f250 about the same way. He just absolutely didnt care about breakage or body damage. That poor old truck used to be a local legend. That poor old ford finally had enough and has donated its drivetrain ( 390, 4spd, and dana 60's) to an 89 ranger that hes hoping to have ready to go in the spring.

oldrusty replied to BREEZE1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
you couls also actuate it with some vacume line and a valve run from a source on the engine. I believe jeepcomj did it on one of his trucks using an air valve out of a big truck. You could also use some sort of small ball valve. Just run a vacume line into the valve then out to the actuator on the axle. When the valve is open vacume is allowed to pass to the actuator giving you 4x4. When the valve is closed you would have 2x4. -
went and got an associates degree in aviation electronics right out of high school. Counselors told us we were going to be "in demand" because all the guys who were doing this work now for the airlines were reaching retirement age in a few years. Fast forward 8 years and look at the current state of the airline industry. :( :( However, I can solder like a son of a gun and have no trouble reading electrical schematics..... :clapping: :clapping:

anudder quick update.......Got most of the underhood wiring finished up. Mounted the battery and installed the new cables. Finished bending new transmission lines an got them all hooked up. Still need to plumb up the heater and heater hoses and mount the alternator and shell be ready to fire up. :D :D :D Hoping to get to hear it run for the first time next weekend.....have to wait for alternator brackets I bought off of ebay so I can finish the wiring. On a side note I traded the tj rims and tires I bought off craigslist for $50.00 for a complete set of Eagle Alloy 108's with almost new 235 60 15 uniroyal tiger paw cts's straight up. :clapping: :clapping: They should look pretty good on the old mopar next summer.

Beautiful job. Love the color. I love painting in the driveway...done some of my best work there. Getting harder to do it there though with all the environmental stuff though.

Will 30s look too small with 1-2" lift? Pics?
oldrusty replied to phenryiv1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
30's should look good with that amount of lift in my opinion. This is my truck sporting 235/75 15's with about 5 inches of lift. Planning on switching to 31 10.50's in the summer along with some prettier paint :clapping: -
Drove it to work this morning in some CRAZY wind. Dodging trashcans and tree limbs the whole way. Just found out when I got here that they recorded 73 mph gusts here at the airport  ( had to evacuate the control tower for a while) Weather is calling for sustained winds of over 40mph through 7 pm. Should be an interesting ride home too.

I have also bought a 92 chevy lumina euro 2 door for $150.00 sold it for $1,000. A wrecked 93 s10 blazer for $400.00 sold it for $2,500 after replacing the front clip. A 93 grand prix se 2 door for $150.00 sold for $1,500. I used them all as work cars back before my comanche came along. I used to fix one up and drive it till I sold it to save on gas in my lifted z71 chevy. Its amazing what some people consider junk in the right neighboorhoods.

Back in August of 2008 I was doing some landscaping for a guy my dad worked with. First day I was there I noticed what I thought was an old xj behind his shed. Fast forward a couple days job is done and as hes paying me I ask him "whats up with the old jeep?" He proceeds to tell me that it has a busted rearend and his wife is hounding him to get rid of it. I told him I could haul it out of there for him and he asks how much. He ended up giving me the truck and $50.00 for gas to haul it away    It had 2 bad injectors and a ccouple missing ring gear teeth on the rearend. I wound up swapping my buddy at the junkyard a 2 door 77 ltd that I got 4 free for a derby car for a set of 3.55 geared xj rearends, a complete fuel rail with injectors and an old cross the bed toolbox. So....I got her on the road without spending a dime other than an oil and filters change and tune up.......
-
:agree: I love my 3.55s. By far my most favorite mod so far. With my 235 15's I can cruise around in 5th gear just about all the time. I rarely have to downshift on hills. The best part is she still pulls down an average of about 18 mpg back and forth to work. Never had any problem leaving rubber on the road as I just don't try it. The last time I did was the reason my truck now sports 3.55's instead of 3.07's......Stupid d35

are you sure your using the right procedure? They are different for the manual vs auto trannies. I used the same info from BLHTAZ when I replaced my tps a couple weeks ago and it runs awesome now. Bye the way TAZ thanks again

A buddy o mines brother named his daughters Cheyanne and Sierra. -
The D35 rears will break with 31" tires on them if you are too hard on the throttle, so even if he did "rebuild" it...that means nothing but he rebuilt a weak piece of junk that is going to break easily with those tires when any stress is put on them. :agree: :agree: :agree: :agree: excessive application of throttle with ample available traction will completely destroy a d35 in a matter of seconds even with puny little p235 75 5 15's.......  on a side note old rusty now sports a chrysler 8.25 :clapping: :clapping:
