front end shaking....I give up....update 10/15
oldrusty replied to oldrusty's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I wasnt there when they balanced the tires so I'm not sure. My brother manages the detail shop at a local ford dealership and he took them to work and had them balanced. Ive had other tires done there and never had a problem. I did tell him to make sure they checked the rims and he said they were good. What confuses me is Ive had 2 different sets of tires on two different sets of aluminum wheels on the truck and both had the same result. But when I stepped up to the 31's on a third set of wheels the shake went away. I'm just kinda frustrated with the whole thing right now as I was sure balancing the tires was going to solve my problem. -
front end shaking....I give up....update 10/15
oldrusty replied to oldrusty's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
thanks for all the advice. Like I said I have checked and rechecked the front end on this truck and I can't find any loose or worn parts. I was leaning twords the control arm bushings might have to look into some new control arms. I did have the alignment done after the lift and all was well. One thing I forot to mention this problem started last winter (havent driven the mj all summer because of it). It would shake just like it does now but, If I put the snowplow on and drove it the shake was gone. I don't have a problem replacing parts on a 20 year old suspension system just don't want to replace pasrts that arent bad. -

I thought about that......is there any way to really tell if there good or bad? Control arms do seem to twist on the bushings by hand fairly easy. -
I have a piece of real thin lexan that I cut for the drivers window on mine. I broke it plowing snow last winter and really couldnt stand the trash bag flapping in my ear. I cut the lexan the same size as a stock window but its thin enough I can bend it and snap it into the window channels. I was going to toss it when I put the window in but figured it just might come in handy again....lol

front end shaking....I give up....update 10/15

Track bar is as tight as I can physically get it......I really don't get what the heck is wrong with this thing and hate to start throwing parts at it. -
got my winter tires spin balanced today. All were between .75 and 1.50 ounces out. Took them home and put them back on the truck.....and......it still shakes. As soon as you get it up to about 60 mph it starts to shake. WTF? :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

ok....here's my problem....I have a 89 pioneer 4x4 longbed that is driving me nuts. The old girl has developed a nasty case of front end shake. At speeds below 60 mph it drives fine. But as soon as you get above 60 mph the frontend begins to shake violently. The only way to make it stop is to slow down below 35 mph. I had ben told that since to shake was speed related I should have the tires balanced. To test this theory I took the factory aluminum wheels with 235/75r15's off and bolted on a set of 31x10.50's on aluminum wheels that I knew were balanced. With the bigger tires the truck drove great no shake or wobble at all. So....I sent the smaller tires off to be spin balanced. I got them back today and they were all between .75 and 1.50 ounces out of balance. I put the small tires back on today and took the truck for a drive and guess what.......IT STILL SHAKES !!!!!!!! :fs1: :headpop: :grrrr:  :hmm: :fs1: :headpop:  :grrrr: :wall: :wall: I have checked everything under the front end and all the ball joints, tie rod ends, drag link, wheel bearings, check out ok. The track bar is a new napa stock replacement that has less than 10,000 miles on it. all the shocks are relatively new and good. The truck does have a 2" budget lift on the front ( spring spacers). It drove fine after the lift and has developed the shake since then. Does anyone have any ideas what I should be looking at here? I really don't want to run the 31's for winter treads and can't understand why it drives worse with smaller diameter skinnier tires......thanks

my wifes ol xj (2000) wouls scream compared to my 89 mj...I think the biggest difference is just the powerband. The ho in the xj seemed to like the higher rpms. The old mj however loves to lug along at low rpms.....both the xj and my mj have 3:55 gears and p235 75 r 15's so there was no difference there. The xj always felt like is would blow the doors off the mj.....but......no matter how hard I tried I couldnt fit an atv in the xj....so ended up trading it in on the new liberty she bought.I couldnt bear to part with the mj. ..........I think I may have the sickness......lol.

So i have been chasing a case of death wobble on my 89 for about 8 months now. I replaced a broken sway bar link, steering stabilizer, and checked, and double checked everytrhing under the front of my truck. I just couldnt find the problem. A couple people on here told me to have the tires balanced but I promptly dismissed that idea ( i changed from 1 set of wheels and tires to another and the truck still shook.) I finally gave in this evening and had a set of tires balanced and low and behold she drives great again. so to all of you that suggeated I have the tires balanced last spring.......I bow to you oh holders of the knowledge.......

We use kroil at the shop at work as well as pb blaster. I have found on a few occasions now that the kroil will loosen things that blaster won't. They just bought a case of some new stuff called torque cb that is supposedly better than blaster or kroil....I hate to use the new stuff though. It smells like bubble gum and keeps making me hungry......lol

Sorry for your loss. Its amazing how much our pets become part of the family. We had to have our buddy "Jake" put down last summer after 12 years. I still find myself calling for him once in a while when I walk in the door.

Had a productive day yesterday. Started out by putting the trim and seats back in the mj and taking it for a little spin. Felt great to drive it again. Still need to put new brakes on it and replace a broken swaybar link and shes ready to push some snow. :D Then moved on to the cj. Finished up repairing the harness....Went back and forth a couple times on wether to change the distributor or not ( I got a new gm hei style with it). Figured Id give the original one a shot. After a little shot of gas down the carb she fired right up. Disnt want to idle till I figured out the manifold bolts werent there. After I put them in and tightened them she starts right up and purrs like a kitten........Next up brakes.

Thanks for the compliment. The mopar is far from a show piece but I'm pretty proud of it. Its come a long way from the rolling dented shell I drug home a few years ago. Still needs some trim parts and bumpers along with the seats redone.

Ive seen some sheet metal locally on craigslist....Kinda holding off on that as I need to get my z71 painted before I start on this one...Plans for now are to just get it to run so I can move it around. Spent the last few nights putting the front clip back on and repairing the cut up harness. Hopefully Ill get to hear it run this weekend.

I forgot to mention I happened to run into the guy who originally bought it from the towing company a couple weeks ago. He asked me if my bud had ever done anything with the cj. I kinda chuckled and said I had ended up with it. Guys laughs and says " here I guess your the one who needs this then". Reaches into the console on his truck and hands me a clear pa title for the cj!!!!! Turns out the towing company had filed a mechanics lean against it and once the title came back they had mailed it to him........Plans are to try to straighten it out and paint it... The wife has always wanted a wrangler. I figure maybe this will be close enough.

Since the big block mopar is up and running I figured might as well drag this one in...... the patient 1982 CJ7 Renegade.......the story.....the original owner drove it to pennsylvania from mississippi to visit relatives last summer(2008). While he was here he wound up getting into an accident and the jeep had to be towed. The poor kid had no cash and no way to get the jeep home so he left it with the towing company.....Fast forward to last winter.... A friend of a friend buys the cj from the towing company with the plan to pull the engine to replace the one in his wrangler.....Fast forward a couple more months...the new owner calls me to ask if Id be interested in swapping the engines. After going over to look at both jeeps I convinced the owner the wrangler just needs a head gasket. We do the job and the wrangler runs great......Fast forward a few more weeks.....The cj gets bought by my best friend to be built up into a "woods buggy"..... Fast forward till last month.....my bestest buddy decides he'd rather go drag racing and buys a 5.0 mustang instead. He offers me the cj for $800.00.....The good.....virtually rust free tub, 4 almost new 33x12.50's on aluminum rims, Jeep specialty equipment winch ( looks identicle to a warn 8274), brand new moser rear axle shafts, brand new billet hei distributor, new high lift jack......The bad.....needs a hood, both front fenders, Body looks to have shifted on the frame, The first friend of mine cut all the engine wiring in preperation for pulling it.........so here she is ....so what does everyone think.....did I get a decent buy?

Currently my dd is a 94 mercury sable. Bought it off a neighbor with 116,000 miles for $300.00. The comanche has been semi retired since I got it in april (ac in the sable works great, mj doesnt..lol). However, the manche is in the garage now for a few hiccups. Winter isnt that far away. :ack: And I don't think I can fit the plow on yhe sable. :D

my 93 z71 has 228,000 on it now and still sports the factory riveted in ball joints. The only parts ive replaced were 1 front wheel bearing and 1 pitman arm. Ive owned the truck 10 years and shes been a good one. Its going under the knife this winter for a little cosmetic surgery. Hopefully ....lol

Have you thought about trading your Comanche for a new Jeep?
oldrusty replied to mknherhappy's topic in The Pub
my rusty old mj will be with me for a long...long time. The old girl still averages about 20 mpg back and forth to work even with the added weight of the snow plow mount and bracketry. Plus she earns her keep all winter long( at least when it snows). I have started tearing her down for a front end bushing rebuild.....stoopid death wobble..  ......and a paint job....but she aint goin anywhere.........here she is in all her glory last winter -
mine is the second in from the left. can't believe I don't have a better pic....Ill have to get one tomorrow.

wound up with a deep river cystal blue one. There will be no lift....mama says no way....The libby seems bigger inside than the xj had. Definately has more leg room and the cd mp3 satelitte radio is pretty cool.....even has its own hard drive you can download pics or video into.

I was really upset with idea of seeing it done in. I just kept thinking that it would make somebody a good ride. I was really happy when they said it was gonna live........On a side note I have to say the new liberty is really nice.

Just went this morning to see about trading the wifes 2000 xj on a new suv. Went to the local dodge dealer first because the wife liked the nitro. Really didnt want to see the old xj killed body is rust free and the 4.0 still runs great at 133,000. When we got there we found out the nitro didnt get good enough gas mileage compared to the xj to qualify. Wife ho hummed a bit then decided that she wanted to deal on a jeep patriot.( definately not my choice but shes the one buying and driving it.) To make a long story short the sales manager comes over and tells us he really hates to see the xj killed as he thinks he could sell it no problem. Ended up giving us $3,800.00 trade in plus $3,500.00 cash incentive from chrysler on a 2009 liberty rocky mountain edition.
