High Fuel Economy Engine Swap Options?
Crash replied to Oyaji's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you can find one, a slightly modded Cummins diesel 4A.. not B is lighter and with similar mods as the 4bt/isb can put out really decent power and awesome fuel economy. There are a couple members over @ the naxja forums that have done the Benz 6-cyl diesel swap. 1 or 2 which have done the VW TDI swap as well. -
Not sure if you got this figured out, but I believe that I have my stock set still, bushings have probably seen better days but the arms are straight.
-
Nice find, but as one said before. Since these were built by AMC, the columns are basically typical GM style columns.

Thank you. As it sits, it has the 2wd beam in it. I kinda like the idea of a prerunner. There are a couple companies that make 4.27/4.30 gears for lpD30. I know that hp is more desirable. Maybe I can find a front 44 to match. That would help with the wheel bolt pattern as well. When I get closer to getting it on the road I'll put more thought into it. I've even thought about running a wj 30. Then I would have better brakes and steering. Depending on the casting of the head some had issues.

Of course, money is always a necessity when it comes to purchasing items. So, right meow, anything that happens with the MJ will be in late Oct. Picking up a 1995 Isuzu Rodeo D44 complete with disc's, stock 4.30 thick cut gears Have a few options for low-er cost on drivetrain parts. 4.0L/NV3550/NP231 from a 2002 TJ complete with harness for about 1500$ 89-91 (not sure which) 4.0/AW4/231 (I think) wrecked/rolled XJ, complete -minus rear end for about 750$ - need to find out if front axle is straight and the gearing. At this point I want it running and driving sooner than later. Otherwise, I would just wait til I find a deal on an LS engine. Who knows, maybe I will by the time I can afford anything.

It is the same engine, with different accessories. You should be able to swap oil pan, whether from existing engine or ordering one. Most likely based on oil capacity.
-
With a manual, you can use whatever you want. If you were to get an electrically controlled auto is where you would have issues.

While it's running, pull one plug wire at a time, see if anything changes. I also recommend some seafoam and maybe some MMO.

Closed Cooling System On A 1991 4.0 Ho
Crash replied to FrankTheDog's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Maybe someone didn't know any better and installed the closed cooling system in it? -
Steering Conversions. . .
Crash replied to ftpiercecracker1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The draglink is the same But the V8 tie rod is solid. If you can pick one up for cheap enough including repalceming the TRE's go for it. Otherwise I would say spend 100$ and get an aftermarket tie rod with ends. If you are looking for better braking as well. Then a WJ swap would be good. There is some work involved tho. It is not just plug n pray. -
Power Doors From 94 Cherokee To 91 Comanche
Crash replied to Virginia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Up to 96 body was the same. So the doors will bolt in. As far as wiring, you would need to pull the kick panels and see. -
I am going to go the ls motor route. And at the very least, buy the novak engine mounts and headers. Frank Z and John D as well as a few other people have done the swap in xj's mostly. Same principal tho, since the engine bay is the same.
-
The drag link is the same between the XJ and ZJ. Not better/improved like the V8 ZJ tie rod. WJ axle is wider, so will not work. It seems like a common upgrade is the WJ steering/brakes. You will modded or custom steering links and a modded trackbar/mount. But you get bigger and better braking and cross over steering. And it is not a direct bolt-in.

How Do I Air Bag My New Mj Comanche ?
Crash replied to Burntoast914's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not sure how it would work lowered, but an IFS D30 frame from an AMC eagle would be your ticket to IFS in the front. -
99 Brake Booster Swap Questions!
Crash replied to Dirteatr717's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I got parts from a 96, I think dual dia. bosoter/master and also got the matching brake pedal. So no trial and error grinding and fitting the new rod, etc. As far as the lines, you could probably do some sort of adapter/union. I work at carquest so I figure I can test fit and figure all that out before I swap in mine. -
For aftermarket gauges, Frank Z and I believe also John D on Naxja did a full set of autometer gauges in a custom plate of sorts setup the way the stock gauges are. I will probably go that route with my MJ.

8.8 Axle Swap Into A 90 Comanche
Crash replied to Biotex's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
Did you by chance change/swap out the stock prop valve for a ZJ/WJ valve? It is supposed to change the front/rear amounts applied. -
Transmission Coolant Line Disconnect
Crash replied to jimoshel's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
In my XJ, and possibly in my MJ, if I end up installing a 4.0L/AW4 I am going to adapt to AN fittings on the trans, and either AN or barbs on an aftermarket cooler. Just a thought. -
So, if all goes well I will be picking up a complete running/driving Renix XJ for a low price. If all goes well the MJ will be running/driving sooner than later. Debating on what to do about the HVAC system since it's not there meow. I know I can pull it from an XJ, but it seems like a lot more work.

Just found this while browsing my old dakota forum.. Decent amount of money, but more power than you will ever need. http://www.dakota-durango.com/forum/showthread.php?t=197378 It's in the first post.

I believe that there are some Delco style CS-130's with 130+amp output that will fit directly. If you AC doesn't work/ you want to ditch it, I recommend an alt relocation. Not sure if he is on here. But a member over at Naxja, 5-90 makes awesome upgraded cables. Yes, if you have the know how, they are easy to make, but he does not charge much more than what it costs to DIY.

Since the engine bay/front frame is essentially the same, I would consider checking out some LSx swap on the naxja.org forums. Frank Z and John D come to mind for this. I as well, plan on doing some sort of LSx swap. Unless I end up building something, which may happen down the road anyways, I really would like to start with a 6.0/6.2L truck engine, LSx car style intake (stock, or FAST if I can afford, there's a vendor on pirate that has some awesome, high clearance oil pans), 6L80 6 spd auto would be awesome as well, novak headers, engine mounts, possibly rad, etc.
-
Lots of people recommend the Synergy suspension ball joints. Cost around 200$ for the full set. Some of the Jeepspeed teams run these with zero issues.

I personally, never been a big fan of Chryco powertrains. I do, however, like me some XJ/MJ, ZJ and WJ's. Yes, the 242-I6 is super reliable, but was in existence before Chryco owned AMC/Jeep. My plan for both my XJ and MJ is GM LSx style engines. If I can make it happen, use the 6L80E, 6 spd trans as well. These GM engines are super reliable, plentuful, and powerful. Novak makes pretty much everything you need to drop in an go, from motor mounts, to headers/rad etc. Other than diesel, you will say to yourself "Could have had a V8"
