bleeding an external slave AX15
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
that's what I like about you Eagle......your eternal optimism  Something about holding the slave in a downward position while engaging the pushrod, the air in it collects at the rear and you have to force it back upward. Dunno, it's worth a shot anyway. I can drive it as is, but I don't like where the disengagement point is, and there's a bit of pedal free travel from the resting position. We'll see what happens. Can't make it any worse :D Jeff -
bleeding an external slave AX15
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I dunno......it fit both ways, so I decided that it being on the top was better than being on the bottom :dunce: Guy on NAXJA says to reverse-bleed it (remove the slave and keep pumping the rod until there's no more air bubbles in the master. Sounds good to me. I'll give it a shot tonight and see what happens. Jeff -
(also posted on NAXJA.....) Long story short, I swapped AX15's in my MJ to an external slave setup. Sourced a sealed, prebled master/hydraulic line/slave assembly from the junkyard but awhile ago, I seperated the slave and hydraulic line from the master because Pat needed the slave. He ended up not using it and I got it back, reattached the master and put it all in my heep. There's a small allen head setscrew in the top of the slave that I cracked open to bleed the assembly (and got showered with brake fluid in the process), and I've got a somewhat good pedal but I know there's still air in the system. Anyone ever successfully bled one of these "sealed, pre-bled" assemblies? I was thinking about replacing the setscrew with a conventional bleed screw....anyone happen to know the thread/pitch of it? TIA, Jeff

There's two different versions of the 4.0L waterpump, one for the XJ/MJ which has offset front end components and one for the YJ/TJ with centered componenets. There's about a 1/2" difference in the length of the "snout" that the pulley bolts too (the YJ/TJ one is shorter). Sounds to me like your PO installed a YJ pump and the washers you added to it, while now preventing the pulley from rubbing, are causing the pulley to be out of line with the rest of the pulleys. Jeff

I'm smelling a rat here.......how long has that dealership been sitting on that XJ? Most likely awhile, I'd imagine. Then they bait a customer (you) who gives them some hand money and signs a "contract" and mysteriously pulls it all out from under you. Hmmmm. They're probably expecting you to raise a ruckus, at which point they'll up the ante to get you to pay more for it. I'd bet there was no sale made, nor three other parties interested in the vehicle. I'd say get your deposit back and move along. It all just doesn't sound right to me as you described it. Jeff

Thrush full welded (same design as a FM40, but half the cost). Turndown tip off the back FTW. Jeff edit: see page 2 viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20546&hilit=thrush&start=15

transmission change question
mjeff87 replied to jeepaholic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
dragging up an old post because I decided to swap a late model AX15 into my MJ over Easter weekend  Got the 14674 bushing hammered into the crank, but NOONE has a late model clutch alignment tool for sale around here (except as part of the whole matched clutch kit). What the @#%*&! happened to parts stores anymore??? It's not like I'm working on a '37 Ford or something......all I need is a clutch tool for a friggin' mid-90's XJ fer chrissakes. Bleah............ :headpop: Jeff -
the front of the crank snout is keyed, and the HB is secured in position by a woodruff key (plus the bolt).....you won't screw the timing up any by removing it. I'd suggest an impact wrench (air powered, but a good quality electric will break it loose also). You'll need a puller to remove it once you get the bolt out, and will most likely have to pull the radiator to do this properly. Jeff

Either the hydraulic line is balooning like Bob said, or perhaps the PO had the flywheel machined when the "almost new" clutch was installed prior to you acquiring it. Jeff

I've had two hard-part failures on the internal slave, with brand new parts when I converted to 4.0L. The first was two days after the conversion as I was driving the MJ home from the garage I did the swap in......one of the stupid little U-clips that hold the hydraulic lines into it fell out and rendered me clutchless. Had to limp it back to the garage and drop the tranny to repair it (replaced the clips with cotter pins, FYI). And, just as recently as two weekends ago, I noticed something metallic sticking partially out of the bottom of the bellhousing (as the clutch had been becoming more and more chattery, and worse by the day). Pulled the inspection plate and what remained of the steel washer that secures the internal unit to the tiny little roll pin driven into the bearing retainer (reference Genovast's post above) fell out. I am officially done with the internal slave POS. I have a spare external AX15 I've been keeping in storage as a backup.....it's going in on Saturday morning. Jeff

bet she could swap out a CPS in about 20 seconds flat.......

if this is the rig in your sig line, with the 2.5, go 4.88's. I ran my 2.5 on 33's with 4.56's for awhile and all was good, then I stepped up to 35's. The 2.5 did "ok" with it for the time I ran it, but it just wasn't a good setup on the highway (offroad was good, though). Just not enough engine, combined with heavy MT tires (on steel 15X10's) and increased wind resistance the 6" lift created......I was pushing the four little squirrels to the limit. I ended up swapping a 4.0 in it to solve that problem ;) My old 2.5 is still pulling faithful DD duty in pingpong's street MJ, too, 200K+ miles and counting. Jeff

Wheel rotates hard after changing front brake pads

Eagle, I'm no help on your current quest but I'll keep my eyes out for ya. If in your search you happen to run across a 99-01 XJ Sport, 2-door BLACK 5-speed though, and you pass on it, let me know. I want one of those (specifically), but that's not something you can order up at a used car lot/dealership, ya know? Jeff

As I recall all of those C4C vehicles have to be moved out of junkyard inventory within a certain time period (6 months or something similar). There was a huge glut of all makes/models in my local yards when it first started but they're all gone now. Idiots (that designed the stupid C4C program), every last one of them..... Jeff

WIfe and I are taking a long weekend and heading up to NYC. A couple of friends of ours from PA are driving up, we're flying up and meeting them, staying in midtown. Don't really have anything on the agenda other than making it down to ground zero (I've got pictures from up inside the towers from the last time we were there). If anyone local wants to meet up for lunch and/or beers shoot me a PM and I'll give ya my cell #. The only meal that is set in stone is tomorrow night, a little Italian place called Ralph's that is always the mandatory first-night-in-the-city dinner. Little hole in the wall place at 56th and 9th, but they have THE tenderest veal I've ever eaten  . Jeff

ballpark, to do it right, I'd say minimum of $500 for the front end. If you buy all new shiny stuff even more. Shop around the classifieds and see what folks are selling off either moving up or out of the sport....take your time and don't half azz it. You'll be happier in the end. Figure out what it is you want out of your rig. You may end up better off with a smaller lift staying spring under and only going 2-3 inches. With that, you can get by passibly still using stock front end components and not spend as much. From your sig line, you say you want to go to 31" tires...you can do that easily with a simple AAL in the rear and some coil spacers in the front. I wouldn't consider going SOA unless you were considering 33-35" tires, and even those can work with less lift and a judicious application of a sawzall and proper wheel backspacing.
