Amc 20 u-joint straps?
HOrnbrod replied to 88whitemanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That's doable on the D44 as there's barely enough metal to support the larger hole required for the u-bolts, but don't know about the AMC-20 pinion yoke. I did the drill out for the u-bolt mod on my D44, but wasn't comfortable with the amount of metal left surrounding the 5/16" hole on the outer ears. Later on I replaced the the pinion yoke with the beefier Dana u-bolt pinion yoke; it was less than $40. I don't know if a u-bolt pinion yoke is even available for the AMC-20 axle though. :dunno: -
Thanks all for the replies - appreciate it. It'll stay as is. I'm pleasantly surprised.

I'm thinking of removing the red swooshes from the sides of my truck. I tried to make this topic into a poll, but it's not working or I'm too dumb to figure it out. Thanks very much to Jeremy (Minuit) for his graphics magic. A: As it is now - leave it alone. B. Remove swooshes. C. Make it two-tone. What would YOU do? A, B, or C? Any and all comments welcome.

MJ's never had overhead consoles from the factory, so you will have to use a wiring diagram for a 90 XJ. Does your console have keyless entry?

It also suggests the wife is the supreme commander and unless she approves any suggestions they ain't gonna happen. Duals on a 2.5 with an S10 topper. Tastefully done.

Ride height / track bar question
HOrnbrod replied to Paul Bruchal's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
De nada. Most everything I think is important and/or comes up a lot I sticky it in the DIY forum. I'm lazy and don't like searching. -

Metric Ton Leaf question thread
HOrnbrod replied to jpnjim's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I got mine maybe five years ago from National for my LWB. They lifted the rear end almost 3", but did settle down about an inch in the following year. Never maxed out on a load, but did several runs with 1000-1200 lbs. in the back. The truck dropped very little if at all. I purchased them from General Spring because they had the best price at the time, and I was unaware of Hell Creek. If I did it again, I would purchase them from Hell Creek because of their good customer service. -
Agree, and thanks. Saw that and more. Passed.

Yep, picked up a new take-off bumper the next day for $40. Now is a good time to get that custom rear bumper you have always wanted.

Very nice!

I think we've all done that a time or two. I know I have. Just last week in fact to the new JK............

cannot modify CPS, cruiser tip
HOrnbrod replied to dkmcgowan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You can't tell. The reason is that the CPS is fooling the ECU. The timing light measures the pulse fire on #1 cylinder based on TDC. Don't matter what happens before it gets there. So, no one has bothered to do a before and after timing test? -

Even worse. The home of Renault. :ack:

cannot modify CPS, cruiser tip
HOrnbrod replied to dkmcgowan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I know this mod is supposed to advance the timing a few degrees, but why did you feel it necessary to do so? Also, has anyone checked the timing with a light before and after to see how many degrees it actually advances? -
Looks great Ben. It's a similar layout to our downstairs bath including the window in the tub enclosure. I used a rectangular whirlpool tub fitted wall-to-wall to get more footprint for the tub, then tiled it all in. Used the same light fixtures too.

New front brakes, inner and outer pad?
HOrnbrod replied to airspeed's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The XJs & MJs are, but I don't know about all models. I've had a bunch of XJs and a couple of MJs and have changed front rotors and pads many times over the years. I can't believe I've been lucky all those times. I did notice in the parts manual that the brake pad set for the 1990-92-1/2 2WD XJ/MJ vehicles has a different p/n than the 4WD set, so maybe it just applies to those vehicles. :dunno: But Airspeed has an 88, so it applies to the earlier Renix models too. This is the thread when I first discovered the inboard/outboard pad difference: -
Most of the Siemens junk is now made in you-know-where.

I don't know, Don. You planning on tearing the whole thing apart for a repaint? This just doesn't seem up to your standards. I've been talking to the guy Ben. According to him he purchased the truck in Orlando two years ago. The owner before him in CO, the PPO if you will, painted it blue. It was originally yellow. There is no tailgate for some reason. The current owner bought it for Lowes runs, but now has another truck, so he's selling it. Odometer doesn't work so the original mileage - :dunno:. So I don't know if I'll go look now. Looking for something a bit more original. This one has the period correct Buick 350 - they are not known for running hot at all, unlike the AMC V8 equipped J-trucks.

A bad or missing O2 sensor won't cause a no-start. You can disconnect it and it will start, but will stay in open loop mode running on a stored map from the ECU. If you are referring to your 91 HO, I know of no sensors with wires on the left side of the block where the freeze plugs are. Check to make sure the CPS connector near the intake manifold is still plugged in. Also pull the cover off the PDC and check for any blown fuses, especially the 30A Auto Shutdown and 40A IGN SW fuse. Do check for fault codes and let us know.
