  1. I started off with an XJ and got hooked to the Jeep world. Never knew the MJ existed until I saw someone rolling by on one in the parking lot where I worked at the time. I initially thought someone had hacked up a Cherokee and thought it looked really nifty. A few google searches later (I think I googled Jeep Cherokee Truck) and I found the Comanche and this forum. Been in love with them ever since. They're particularly special to me because they're basically a Cherokee from the front seats forward, making parts much easier to obtain. I'm currently adapting my MJ to fit a 4.0 from a donor XJ and going to build her up nice for a DD. That's my reasoning for wanting/owning an MJ. My next option would have been a Toyota or Nissan truck.
  2. I agree. The only problem is, my welding skills are very sub par at the moment. But, I suppose I can practice.
  3. That will be a very unique setup. Do you have any pictures?
  4. Really? I just learned something new. Why is that, though? And does that hold true with C8.25's?
  5. All factory D35's are 27 spline IIRC, but c-clip vs. non c-clip will matter as mnkyboy just alluded to.
  6. I was thinking that too. It started to fold where you see that crooked diagonal seam that formed, putting it in a bind of sorts. I'll have to bust out the maul or scrap that idea and do what jonb8 did above. Thank you for the additional pictures mpace6a! Thank for the pictures jonb8. Did you weld that new section in or is it screwed/riveted? I ask because I notice a lot of holes are drilled around the edge, but it looks like you've got it clamped into place where you might be getting ready to weld it.
  7. Today, I gave the firewall a heavy dose of the BFH of Thor. I beat on that thing for 30+ minutes. Wire wheeled it and bed lined it. I think I knocked it back in the correct area to fit the 4.0, judging by pictures on the interwebz and loose measurements anyway. If it's not right, then I'll just go with my original plan of cutting and rewelding. Phase 2 will begin as soon as I get my donor XJ from my parent's house to mine. I am also planning on picking up a NP242 transfercase on Thursday from a '92 XJ to mate to my AX-15.
  8. :agree: If you're going to replace the diff. oil, full synthetic is the way to go IMO. 75W-90 is the appropriate weight for normal everyday driving. If you do a lot of heavy pulling/towing/wheeling, put in 75W-140. Mobil 1 makes some good synthetic for around $12 a quart. Also, if you have a limited slip, don't forget you need the oil additive or buy some diff. oil with the additive already mixed in. Going back to the original question though, like Don said, you likely have 3.55 ratio with that given setup unless for some reason the PO changed it.
  9. Awesome! Do you have any pictures and details on how and what you did to get the tranny mount and firewall modified? The rear prop valve was removed when I did my WJ booster/MC upgrade. Haven't even gotten a chance to really test out the new braking system since I started the tear down right after install of the booster. But yea, any pictures you'd be willing to share would be fantastic.
  10. You guys just sparked an idea. Been looking for MJ parts on CL. I do believe I'm going to enter "Commanche" and "Comanchee" in all of my further searches haha.
  11. Sooo... what did you do to fix it? It could aid me in fixing mine since I have the same problem in my '88 XJ.
  12. You're right Alex. I do believe that the base/customs only came with that steering wheel. But, like you said, AMC just kind of put in whatever they felt like putting in. I've seen some pre-'87 XJs with that wheel but I didn't really pay attention to the difference in trim levels. Perhaps early '86s used the wheel in question and later '86s and so on used the 3-spoke? :dunno: But anyway, you did not come off as rude, so no worries there. I was merely speaking based on what I had observed but like you, I too am learning the vast differences with these Jeeps. I think '87 is where AMC really started finessing their choices in what actually went into this trucks (maybe). '86s seem to be all over the place. You can't even get Jeep to pull up any detailed information about the '86s because records were poorly logged if at all. I had my local dealer run the VIN and all they could tell me was that it was a 2WD Comanche with the 2.5 and a 4-speed (but it's actually 4WD). Nothing about the trim, or specifically which 4-speed tranny, what gear ratios, etc.
  13. That is the earlier model steering wheel. That came with all '86s to the best of my knowledge. Mine's an '86 Custom and has that very wheel. The 3-spoke sport wheel came later.
  14. what is the selec-trac? i tried googlin it but can't find anything, Redwolf Gives an additional 4WD option, ie, "Full-Time" 4WD. The options would be 2H - 4H (PT) - 4H (FT) - N - 4L.
  15. Both are very good. I've used both. You can use MM in the gas too, similar to Seafoam.
  16. This looks awesome! Very professional job. Come to NC with that thing, I'd love to see it up close.
  17. Even better, instead of Comanche, it could be called Coslantche. That's right...
  18. Yea, I have a Renix remanned engine available to me, which is why I'm using that. If I had an HO, I would've used that. The work needed to make all this work is pretty much the same. Like you, I'm not so much interested in top end power. This is going to turn into my DD whenever everything is said and done. My XJ is getting about 250 miles out of a tank, so I'm trying to make this MJ something with good power and acceptable MPG.
  19. Made some more progress the past few days, most of which was made tonight. I tackled the dash and HVAC system (in my case, just HV lol). Dash removal was pretty straight forward actually. This write-up helped a lot: Dash removal - Jeep Cherokee Forum. I also opted to remove my steering column/wheel. I'm going to clean up the firewall a tad from where the MJ had a leaking clutch master cylinder at one point. Removing the steering column helps. I also pulled out all the internal wiring harnesses minus the two plugs that go to the B-pillar dome lights, fuel sender and tail lights. Next course of action is seeing whether or not I can get that donor XJ to fire up. Last time I know, it would turn over but failed to start. Think the fuel pump may be shot but we'll know soon. Anyway, the other bit I got done was welding in some bottom radiator supports that I cut out of some 3/16" steel plate. Overkill, I know, but its the only flat steel I had around. But enough of that, it's picture time!
  20. Depends on what kind of abuse he's put on it and the maintenance he's done. I got mine built for $1800 brand new, but after everything was said and done, I tied up about $3200 total into it between intake mani, header, HO power steering pump, HO fuel rail, Hesco FPR, 24lb fuel injectors (which I got free), 62mm throttle body, etc. etc. But... I was putting into my '88 XJ which is Renix. Could have reused a lot of my old stuff despite the intake mani ports not lining up right but I chose not to do that. Anyway, bottom like is, if all is well with the engine in question, $1000 is probably fair, assuming it's just the block with no accessories.
  21. It's the metal can looking thing in the middle of the square on the left side show here. And here's how it should look when it's connected right.
  22. Yes, you could have potentially pulled the cable out from the back of the speedometer gauge.
  23. It came in three different sizes, with the 225 cid being the most notable since it was the best one. I'd love to do a swap like this, convert it to MPFI and use the Renix ECM to run the whole set up. Only problem that I have seen in my little research finding a suitable transmission to run behind it... AX15 is out of the question without heavy modification/custom adapters and anything 4x4 would be a ton of work. But, with a 2bbl carb, I've heard people were getting 30 mpg back 40 years ago on some of these. I imagine with some level of EFI, you could get at least the upper 20's for mpg for sure.
