  1. Here are all the links I have been able to find for this topic. Some are better than others. Hope this helps any and all who are currently doing this swap. new title: 2.5 -> 4.0 swap - Your project MJs - Comanche Club Forums 1986 cherokee 4.0 swap - JeepsUnlimited.com Forums 2.5 to 4.0 motor swap on comanche - Jeep Cherokee Forum 2.5 to 4.0 swap - MJ Tech - Comanche Club Forums 4.0 Into An '86 - MJ Tech - Comanche Club Forums 4.0 Swap ? - MJ Tech - Comanche Club Forums 4.0 swap into 2.5 comanche....how much fun? - Jeepin.com Forums 86' 2.5 to 87' 4.0 swap? - MJ Tech - Comanche Club Forums 86 mj - Your project MJs - Comanche Club Forums BIG Swap Help - MJ Tech - Comanche Club Forums Dash removal - Jeep Cherokee Forum Dash Swap In An '86 Mj - MJ Tech - Comanche Club Forums Need Some Clarification On Some Things... 2. I know this thread is a few months old, but have you gotten any further with this? If so, I'd like to see some pictures as is may aid me in my swap.
  3. Ok, I looked at some previous threads covering this topic. I see where the difference lies. Not sure why I didn't quite catch it the first time. http://comancheclub.com/topic/31039-big-swap-help/?p=314518
  4. Ok, so you're saying that the dipped front cross member is only found in the MJ's with the non-depressed area next to the oval? The reason I'm asking is because I heard from some users here that some late '86s had the revision for the 4.0 firewall but I didn't know if the front crossmember would be like the '87+ or still like the '86-, ie, both go hand in hand.
  5. No, I HAD a BA-10...I put in an AW4....but all the swapping of wiring...88 to 94 has been a little problematic. Brackets, cables etc. It would have been a lot easier just finding an AX-15 and done it properly. If I ever get another MJ (or XJ) with the same configuration that's exactly what I'll do. So... I misread your previous post... But I could imagine the wiring could get a little hairy, especially since you are using a later model AW4 and TCM.
  6. Can anyone tell me by looking at these pictures if this is the typical pre-'87 firewall or if this is the one with the revision for the 4.0? It's hard to tell just by looking.
  7. Got the engine and drivetrain out today and did a little cleaning in the engine bay. Super Clean (in the big purple bottle) is my newest all time favorite degreaser. It cleaned all the grease, oil and crude (and some paint) off of the axle and steering components. Ripping out the engine was a breeze. I had everything unhooked and disconnected from previous nights, so all I had to do today was remove the crossmember and pull the bolts out in the motor mounts and viola! Did it all by myself within 45 minutes. Now the real work begins...
  8. You went to a BA-10? Ouch lol.
  9. Yep, it all depends on what you want to do. The only thing I can say about the manual is that it yields slightly better gas mileage over the automatic. The automatic also sucks down more power from the engine since it's needed in part to shift the transmission automatically. But, it's strictly preferential. My trail rig XJ is an auto, and my MJ (which will be my street rig) is a 5-speed.
  10. I thought about that after I email him, but still. If you're going to take the time do lift and drive a Jeep like that, you had better know enough about it not to make stupid mistakes like that. Just like people calling the 4.0 a "V6" on their ads. Last time I checked, we didn't drive a Ford. I emailed someone yesterday via craigslist who put "V6" in their ad and told them to correct it. That bugs me so bad lol. Evidently, he got my email too, because I just checked out his ad again and now it says "Inline 6".
  11. Yea, I agree with cruiser, gauge is garbage. AZ has a habit of renting out garbage tools. They're nice if you're one of the first 5 people to use it when it's brand new, but after a few uses and the people before not giving two $#!&s about messing up the tool, they wind up being garbage that the next renter has to deal with. Try another loaner tool, preferably not from the same AZ.
  12. What a moron. I emailed him with the following message: "I'm calling bull$#!& on the 1.5" body lift... How the hell do you put a body lift on a Jeep that has a unibody?" I'll be awaiting a response just for schits and gigglez.
  13. '86 with the 2.8 V6 if it's the one in his signature.
  14. Poor doggie... I hope he feels better soon.
  15. A little progress the past couple of days. The engine and drivetrain is pretty much ready to be yanked out. Spent a couple hours tonight modifying the front to accommodate the 4.0 radiator. Started with a Sharpie marker and a tape measure, and ended up with a lot of cut off scrap metal and a place to put the radiator. Only thing left to do for this part is to mock up and weld/bolt on some brackets at the bottom to hold the radiator in place. Once I get the engine out, I'm going to see what kind of modifications I need to do to the firewall (hoping I luck out there but we'll see). Earlier in the day, I busted out the Super Clean and engine degreaser, and cleaned up the bellhousing and flywheel real good. Now they're mostly clean. Next thing to clean thoroughly is the transmission... She's not bad, but I want it to shine.
  16. I haven't started a build thread here yet, but I figured now is as good a time as any. My MJ started its life out as typical base model Comanche Custom with the 2.5L TBI, AX4, NP207. It is now undergoing some major surgery as I am taking on the infamous 4.0L swap. When it's all said and done, it will have a Renix 4.0 from a '90 XJ, an external slaved AX15 from a '96 XJ and either a NP231 or NP242. I have a build thread over on CherokeeForum ('86 Comanche DD) and I will continue to update it there, but as of right now, this thread will start where that one left off. Also, to aid fellow members here in potential swaps of similar nature, here's my photobucket album: Comanche. More in the next post...
  17. If I ever come across a large sum of money, this is the first thing I'm getting. http://www.thisiswhyimbroke.com/amphibious-jeep http://www.watercar.com/matrix.php
  18. Thanks buddy! I'll check it out later and see what I can find.

  20. How do you tell if the flywheel has been resurfaced? I just bought a used flywheel from a '89 4.0/5 speed and it doesn't look as though anything has been done to it... Is the "cone" very noticable? Anyone have a before and after shots? Here's what mine looks like:
  21. Yea, I know it's an old thread.. Just wasn't sure if you had some relevant pictures to aid in my "4.0 in an '86" swap lol. I've become the dead thread revival king lately.
  22. Have another question for you... When I get a transfer case to mate to the AX-15, I'm going to opt for a 231 or 242 from a later model (for the sealed output shaft). The thing that I have a question about is the speedometer gear and cable. The later model uses an electronic speed sensor with shorter speedo gear. Obviously the early Jeeps use the cable driven style with longer shaft. Can I use the cable driven speedometer on the later model transfer case? Also, would I use the shorter shaft speedo gear or the longer shaft one?
  23. I've been wondering about that too since it was mentioned.
