Yup, I would say TPS. Of course after playing boat it could be something like a vac leak from a line popping off or there are a few other sensors that could have gone screwy that can cause similar symptoms. I'd try the TPS first though, you can actually test it with a multimeter rather than jump straight to replacing it. How to prevent it from happening? Moar lift and some nice big boggers!

Why Are The 2.8's So Bad?
GirsMJ86 replied to comanche1989's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The 2.5L is a great little 4-banger IMO. It sure puts the 2.8L to shame. Good mileage and good power in a nice little package, and it kept getting better over the years. -
There is a truck down there we are looking at and was wondering if anyone was close that could take a look at it for us and maybe snap some pics? It is a 1951 International, and we are interested in it because we have a 1950 Farmall H tractor that has been restored. Been looking for one of these trucks to haul the tractor with to shows. Depending on condition it would be worth the drive once the engine in our Power Stroke is fixed. http://www.mautofied.com/1951-International-L-110_Classic-Cars/listing/100556702/

Those look good, and the lift/ride sounds good. Adding these to my list of things for my next MJ. -
Why Are The 2.8's So Bad?
GirsMJ86 replied to comanche1989's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I would say it is because of that lack of power. They only netted you something like 7 more hp but had less torque than the inline 4. The one I had accelerated slower than my moms current yaris. I would not want one in a rig I would be planning on off roading with and it wasn't much fun on the highway. Just because there are a lot of them out there doesn't make them any better. Most people just don't care enough to swap drive trains or just live with it because the car was cheap and they just want to get from A to B. Any engine can get over 200k with normal maintenance. -
Where To Mount A Cb In A Mj
GirsMJ86 replied to TheDirtyJeep401's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When I got my first MJ it had a cb that was attached to the back of the floor console and the mic hung on a metal bracket that stuck through the carpet on the back wall of the cab in the middle. Hope that makes sense, don't have any pics or I would post them. -
Would you look at that... I got an officially posted write-up. Good thing I didn't delete those pics when I cleaned up my photobucket account awhile ago. Glad to see it has come in handy for others.

Anyone Upgrade Their 2.8L Coil/ignition?
GirsMJ86 replied to GirsMJ86's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Roger that guys. I'll just toss on some better wires with new plugs if I get it and call it good unless there are other issues. I found out the thing has been sitting since last fall without being started at all, so kind of hesitant now since those engines are junk to begin with. -
Going to be checking out an '86 with the dreaded 2.8L and if I were to get it I will be wanting to do all I can to improve how it runs. Had one before and that was just awful, will be a huge hit in performance compared to my P71 I currently drive (dropping over 100hp and I can only imagine torque). It already has a Holley fuel injection with Edelbrock intake manifold. Not sure what Holley setup, but I would guess the 3210 two barrel TBI 400 cfm direct replacement. I'll find out for sure once I go look at it hopefully later today or tomorrow. Just wanting to hear your experience on the improvement if you have these. I know the Mallory coil and MSD wires I had in my J10 made a difference in it firing right up and helping it purr. I just want to get back into an MJ and from the pics it looks like I found one with a good body, and supposedly a rebuilt engine (which I don't believe unless he has papers). I may be completely wrong after seeing it in person, but for now I like what I see. A drivetrain swap just will not be in the budget anytime soon and I'm not finding much in the way of 4.0L rigs around me in decent enough shape. So don't go suggesting I do that, looking at you Pat. :P

Yea, any tach should work fine. Do some googling and you can find plenty of the S-10 guys have installed aftermarket tachs. Just gotta find the right wire on the MJ and you should be good. If you do this, be sure to take pics. Might be getting an '86 again and I would like to have full cluster as well.

Easier to just use stainless bolts and washers. Did that on all three MJs I had, paint them black and you never see them.

1987 Metric Ton - Manchester, Nh
GirsMJ86 replied to NHMJXJ's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
If only it were closer, cheaper, and I had a way to bring it home. Don't think I'd get away with hauling it from NH to OH with a Vic. Hard to say for sure with that sloppy paint job and no underside pics, but looks like a good starting point. If anything it has a black interior. -
Rubber Bump Stops On Tailgate?
GirsMJ86 replied to Biotex's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sure thing, they help quite a bit at quieting things down for sure. Another trick that works well is wrapping some duct tape or electrical tape around the support arms if they rattle too much. Just need a strip or two of it about two times around in a spot, not the entire arms. -
Rubber Bump Stops On Tailgate?
GirsMJ86 replied to Biotex's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You could try doing what a lot of us did on the J-Trucks, use CJ hood bumps since the factory ones can't be found anymore. http://www.crownautomotive.net/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CA&Product_Code=J5761372&Category_Code You can find things like these at some auto parts stores too, think I may have even seen them at Lowes before. -
so I figured I would pop in and say hi to everyone. :waving: I may not have a Jeep anymore but boy are they still nice to look at. Would love to get my hands on another, but with my crap part time job I would have to find an even trade for my P71. I think I'd have more luck finding the holy grail. Love the new look of the site Pete, just needs a dark theme to be perfect for these late night stalkings. Quite a few good looking rigs still floating around these parts, and some nice new ones from the last time I was here. Jeep on everybody.

Well I may not have an MJ anymore but I still love the little things. So count me in for a... tan logo (since there is talk of a red one I'd prefer that if offered) medium size heavy hoodie in black

Eliminator Sticker Measurement?
GirsMJ86 replied to over2land's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here ya go Don, just did this kind of quick so its not the best but might give you an idea. Couldn't find a very clear/hi quality pic of a truck with the stripes so cleaned em up the best I could without making a project out of this. If I come across some better stripes I could redo it. Went with Charcoal/Silver because I think that would look the best out of the two base kits he offers unless you order custom. And that's what I would want if I had a silver truck I think. If you want to see Black/Silver or whatever let me know. Image Not Found Looking at it though I would think the silver might be too close to what yours is. Maybe if you custom ordered some Black/Metallic Charcoal... or maybe some Metallic Black/Metallic Charcoal. Yea, that second combo might look pretty slick. :chillin:
