  1. But how strong is that? Because the problem I see with that over actual sliders is that it isn't going to take much to still damage the truck, and for the OP and quite a few others I'm sure, it doesn't actually protect the rockers since they would be hacked out. One solid smack to a rock would cause the sheet metal to pucker, bend, or rip since it isn't very strong stuff. They should have supports attached to the frame to be used for much hard stuff. The best looking sliders I've seen are on H3RESQ's rig, if I ever worry about needing any I'd rather find a shop and have some like these made rather than aftermarket stuff since it can normally be done for less than companies ask for their product.
  2. I've bought four over the years. The first was an '88 Eliminator (4.0L, 2WD, Automatic, complete bucket interior) that had some bad rust in the floors and the spots on the body were bondo filled then it was painted - $2000 locally Second was an '86 X (2.8L, 4x4 Selec-Trac, Auto, buckets) solid body but the 2.8 ended up leaking oil like nothing else - $1400 from NJ Third was my '91 Eliminator I bought from Automan on here and is in my signature - $2500 delivered from Chicago area with a trailer full of parts Forth is my current: '86 X or XLS (rebuilt 2.8L with Holley 2D fuel injection, Edelbrock intake manifold and other stuff, rebuilt AX5, 4x4 Command-Trac, black interior with bench, factory rollbar, factory marchal fog and roll bar lights, new BFG AT KO tires, other odds n ends) mostly solid body, cancer is only just starting in spots - $1800 locally My recent one I feel has been my best purchase, though the '91 was a great truck I wish I had kept. I've seen ones that should be priced higher go for less or absolute trashed ones go for more. Some people just think they are sitting on gold with these. I feel they are only worth what you're willing to pay. For reference I bought my '74 J10 for $3000 and it came with a whole lot of extra new parts, rebuilt 3spd w/RAM clutch, new 33" BFG AT KOs on Pacer Daytona steelies, solid body with only minor cancer starting and floor boards already replaced, 4" lift, Dolphin gauges, and some other stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting. Went to Madison, IN to get it and drove it home.
  3. Getting ready to order all new shocks for my rig and I'm going to run these on the rear, but not sure what to run up front. Not looking to spend a lot, $62 for the pair was one reason I like these as well as them being black. The rig is mostly just driven on the road and is stock height. So what is everyone here using up front?
  4. Yea, I love how the no people aren't saying why.
  5. That's them.
  6. Full cluster and vent windows, I'm jealous. Everything else is the same as the one I just bought, except mine is a 5spd. That's a good price, even if you plan to yank out the drive train to replace that 2.8L.
  7. I've used it in vehicles with less that that on the clock. With how much corn is in the fuel today I figure every little thing you can do has got to help. I know when I got my J10 it was running really rough and kept hesitating on acceleration from sitting for quite awhile, and I had a 6 hour drive home (in the J10). So I ran some seafoam and premium fuel and everything got cleared up and it started to run like a beast.
  8. Jeep trucks were never anything except regular cabs. There was a crew cab J-Truck prototype that never went into production though. The Dakota had a convertible though I think. Never thought they looked right.
  9. That's rough man, good thing Brett was there. Hope you're doing well. On the plus side, cage and soft top MJ.
  10. Would of course be much cheaper than $20 if you went the nuts and bolts route if you go with regular steel. Stainless I can't remember the cost but I will be buying enough to do all four flares on my new '86 shortly so could let you know. And in the rust belt myself I always go stainless when I can.
  11. Maybe this has been brought up in the past, but I was wondering what y'all would think about something like this. I'm sure we all have things we're working on outside of our prized MJs, and I'd be interested in seeing them. Whether that be restoring, building, modifying; cars, boats, trains, planes, kites, birdhouses, clay figures, whatever. I know some people have posted topics showing things they have done in the pub now-and-then, but having an actual section would be great I think. Especially if it is another car or something that is on-going. I know there are forums/clubs for basically every hobby out there, but I've yet to find a group as awesome as everyone here (and the FSJ guys but I kind of consider MJ and FSJ owners of the same crazy breed). The DSM club I was a part of when I had my Eagle Talon was mostly just helpful for tech info, no real club type interactions like we have around here. idk Maybe the room isn't there to expand with something like this, but I think it sounds enjoyable.
  12. Waste of some perfectly good turbines, with center caps no less. :fs1:
  13. Explain a full "frame off" restoration of a Comanche to me? :hmm: ;) uh... maybe half frame-off resto is more fitting? It's not a full unibody since the bed comes off, so that's what I was getting at. The cab obviously would have to be turned and just sprayed and whatnot from underneath. Both Eliminators I had came with a center console. More than likely though it could have been a check box option the original owner wanted. The '86 I just bought is only an X I think (need to check for sure with the VIN) but looks like an XLS with all the chrome and everything on it that my other X I had didn't have. The key reason I think it was just check boxes ticked off is that it has steel wheels and not turbines like a true XLS.
  14. No no no, we use completely non-related obscure titles when we talk things about you Pete. If it was a full frame-off resto it would cost quite a bit, but that would mostly be on his own dime and unless you get extremely lucky you can't expect to make even half that back. For an old '51 IH pickup, full frame-off resto, we were recently quoted at least 20k on top of a 5k very good condition truck. Seems pretty pointless on an MJ though when I've seen near mint original ones go for 2k, just depends who owns it and how crazy they are I guess.
  15. Got ya, same reason I didn't buy a 4dr JK a few years back basically. I'd probably still take one though if the price was right, just so that I wouldn't have to drive the MJ when I visit my family since they live in a town that has become rampant with break-ins and such. Either way still a good looking TJ, love the half doors.
  16. Gotta ask, what's so bad about the 2.5 in a TJ? I would think it would get better mileage? I know I'd jump on it if I had that kind of funds, always wanted a TJ to cruise around in.
  17. After some digging through pics I have, I take that back about the 4x4 badges. Seems the few 86's I have pics of without the giant 4x4 door decals have them on the bed. Stupid parts book, separates 86/87 differences from all the other years on everything but that it seems. Guess it's because they are the same part just in a different location, which is why the book needs an emblem section rather than listing them under the body panel they are stuck too IMO.
  18. Nope, unless my parts book is wrong, the 4x4 emblem was only ever on the cab from the factory. I've only seen it on the bed when they have been replaced or moved, 99% of the time though if the truck has factory paint they have been on the cab no matter the year. 86, 88, 89, 91, 92... I've seen all of these in person with factory paint and they were on the cab. Minor point of course since they could be moved, but I was just saying since it was meant to be a restoration.
  19. I would think it should have turbines as well. The grille is being 10 slot is correct, it's just upside down. The 4x4 emblems are in the wrong spot and there isn't a selec/command-trac badge on the tailgate. He just thinks he is sitting on gold, I mean look at the antique plates and the fact that he just hosed it down to make it look extra good for the pics. IF it truly was restored, he is also trying to get back quite a bit of the money that was put into doing so. No underside pics to see just how "restored" it is. And a side note, 84-90 grilles will fit on a 91-96 if you cut down the metal trim bars above and below the grille and keep the 91+ headlight doors. Did it on my old 91, can see pics in my thread on the last page.
  20. That's what was on my 91, along with a k&n cone. Worked fairly well and looked decent. Always wanted to rig up a heat shield around it though to shield it from the engine.
  21. Can anyone tell me what tools I'm going to need to do this? The truck I'm getting needs this done and I'm not having much luck getting anyone I know with a truck to help me out by towing it home on a uhaul for an hour or so in a week or two. So it is looking like I'll have to fix it were it sits and drive it home.
  22. I thought about that, or the cowl hoods, but I'm someone who just can't bring myself from straying too far from stock look. Plus, with it being the 2.8L I don't feel like spending too much to "improve" it. Previous owner stuck a Holley 2D injection system on it and some Edelbrock stuff, I never would have done that, though it is nice.
  23. @ftpiercecracker1 lol Yea, I figured you had both with that avatar of yours. Excellent taste indeed, and they both match (your pie plates are sideways though) .
  24. :agree: Though I'm not going to wait. I'm going to be ordering one soon and store it for when I have another 4.0L rig. It also has me thinking about if there is enough room to rig something up for the 2.8L in a similar fashion, I kind of doubt it since the edelbrock open sided round filter gets crushed by the hood already.
  25. I see those things all the time in the local auto trader mag. Even saw one in the parking lot of Menards a few years back (looked to be in good shape but every inch of it was painted red :wall: ). Always liked how they looked, hopefully Wilber goes to a good home that can get that eye of his and any other aliments fixed up for him.
