  1. The black plastic is probably a protective cover for the connection to the master. I imagine it pops right off. The other one is a bleeder.
  2. Have you tried the two-wrench trick? That's what I've always done on the top 2.5 trans bolts.
  3. I could have sworn I read a few articles back in the day that said it was, but it appears I was incorrect.
  4. Wobble extension works best, or a U-joint.
  5. What year is your AX-15 from? Original in your 1990? If it's a 92+ AX-15, you'll need the bushing/bearing for a 92+ XJ with a 4.0. If it's an 89-91, I'm not sure. I know the newer trans behind the older 4.0 gets the 74 CJ 304 bearing, but not sure about the older trans behind a newer 4.0.
  6. AX-15 and BA 10/5 use the same clutch. A bearing for the BA 10/5 is going to be hard to find, and expensive. By the time you're done pulling the trans, ripping it apart, doing all the labor for a trans bearing, mixed with the cost, you'll be better off putting the AX-15 in, especially if you already have one. Does your AX-15 have a T-case on it already?
  7. They do, but I was just curious if it was caused by a dead tensioner or not. The 2.5 has one, the 4.0 does not.
  8. Last AX-5 I installed, I got it up under the truck with a standard 3 ton floor jack, then bolted on the crossmember without the trans mount. This let me use the jack to adjust the bell while lining everything up from behind, without the chance of it dropping on me. Once it was bolted to the motor, I popped the crossmember back off, and reinstalled with the mount.

    Alternator

I've always found the alternators to be on the easier side. Last one I did took me an hour and 20 minutes, that was from when it died on the side of the road to being jumped and driven again.
  10. Not true, I've seen people do it. Of course, one of the guys had a tongue so long he could literally lick his eyeball...
  11. My guess is that your leak is your slave cylinder, not the motor. The symptoms you described are that of a problem with the clutch hydraulics.
  12. I've never had a problem with photobucket. I hate their interface, but they've always worked for me.
  13. And it would demolish that poor AX-4/5 in about 10 seconds. He'd need a new trans anyway, so that would negate the bolt pattern.
  14. Glad it was something simple.
  15. Pat's got a 3800 in an MJ. The bellhousing bolt pattern's the same(90 deg V6, but still uses the 60 deg pattern), but he had to modify a bellhousing for the starter. He's also toasted a couple transmissions and D35s.
  16. As long as you got it going fast enough, don't see why not. It doesn't know the difference of what's spinning it.
  17. There shouldn't be any need for thread sealer, they don't thread into anywhere where there's oil. If you don't have RTV all the way around them though, it could be seeping out from there - but I doubt it would be a noticeable amount if they're tight. Plus, I think there would be evidence of it. Either there's a crack somewhere, or it's coming out of the shaft on the retainer, and just thin enough to not get thrown around by the input shaft. You may have to pop the retainer off and check that seal.

    New Guy

Pictures would help quite a bit. Look for rust, body/frame damage is one of the biggest considerations on these, everything else is relatively easy to replace. Some people would pay $1500 for an empty shell with no engine/trans/axles or wiring, if it was 100% rust free, but wouldn't pay $1500 for a rust bucket with a perfectly running drivetrain. Welcome to the club! (Also giving us your location may help)
  19. This is mostly right. While it's pretty safe to say the distinction is Renix/HO, it's off by a year. 1991 uses the Renix setup. Just an FYI.
  20. Contribution sent. And no, I don't need anymore yet. Not a lot of MJs around here... and I don't think anyone I've given them to has joined yet.
  21. Pull your inspection cover and make sure all 4 TC bolts are tight. I had 2 loosen up on me once, and had a metallic noise from them rubbing on the inspection plate.
