Weird symptoms ... related?
Geonovast replied to bigalpha's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The rear bulbs need to be dual filaments. Both bulbs are tail/brake/blinker. XJs run single filaments for the blinkers. -
Solid cooling system upgrades?
Geonovast replied to cocco78's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You don't want it to stay too cold. Operating temp for these motors is around 200-210. If it stays too cold, especially if you have a Renix system, it'll kill you mileage. -
Very doable. Plenty of people have done it. Just takes a lot of time. This isn't a quick one-weekend deal unless you've done it before. What gearing do you have in your MJ now? What gearing is the donor? I would worry about the axles last. I would strip the MJ clean, get literally everything out of it. This will give you a good opportunity to clean up any rust spots, and maybe re-paint the engine bay and inside of the cab. Then I'd pull the motor and trans out of the donor. Move all the wiring and such into the MJ, then dump the motor and trans back in. I'd give the motor and trans a good look-over, probably throw a gasket set on it at least while it's out. It's just as involved as going from a 2.5 to a 4.0.

Replacing the firewall would be... a lot more trouble than a couple swings of a hammer. They're not quite that different. You'll need more than the motor, trans, and T-case. You need EVERYTHING under the hood and dash. All the wiring, cooling, brackets, RAD support and the stuff behind the header panel. You literally have to move most of the guts over from the donor. Another thing you'd need to take into consideration is gearing. Plus you'll have to have a read driveshaft made if you can't find one.

Solid cooling system upgrades?

I had some overheating problems in my first 88 XJ, so I wired the fan directly to a switch, powered it through the acc(so I couldn't accidentally leave it run with the truck off) spot on the fusebox, and just left it on most of the time. Your radiator may just be dead, not necessarily a problem with it being a closed system. -
Gah ... removing carpet trim

Every one of those I've seen was rusted out and stripped. You might try a screw-out tip. -
The low wiper fluid light is one of the few things I've never had a problem with on any vehicle I've ever had. :dunno: Only problem I've had related to the tank is I switched the wires once on my first XJ. Rear wiper motor didn't work anyway so I left it that way.

Have you bled properly? Bleeding the externals isn't quite the same as doing the internals. You must remove the slave cylinder, and using a special tool(or an old exhaust clamp and some bolts) completely compress the cylinder while you're bleeding. If you don't do this, air will most likely get-or stay-trapped in the system.

Star Trek was awesome. Even if you don't like Star Trek, I'd still recommend seeing the new movie.

:agree: I'd like to see this AC unit too.

Yup, I'm keeping track of two of them since I frequently travel from one to another and am probably moving next year.

I go through Hannibal on my way down/up. Only Golden Corral I've ever eaten at. How far are you from town?

I don't think it's going to be very good. I wasn't impressed by the first one, and the new one looks worse. You can have too many special effects. That's a big reason the 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies sucked.

Simple track bar question
Geonovast replied to ocskipper's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Your problem is probably your drop pitman arm. They are  on XJs/MJxs. -
I saw that before... seems like more work than just fixing that damn leak.

Personally I like the rake. That way it doesn't look like it's sagging when you have something heavyish in the back, and I think it makes it look a little meaner with it. I leveled out my 2.5 when I put the 4.0 springs in, and I'm not really that happy about it. When I get the 4.10 axles in and throw some bigger tires on it, I'm gonna pop the rear up a bit so I can get the rake back.
-
Remember, with 2" bigger diameter tires you only need 1" more clearence, since the other inch will be on the 'bottom' of the tire. Looking even in that pic is a bit of an optical illusion, they look about even, but with the back being farther away, it'll look smaller.

Ya I got some skyjacker disconnects I can use anyways. I haven't seen anyone else play around with this axle, I am hoping I can figure a way to get it to natively run 5x4.5 wheels without adapters. Are the hub assemblies the same as the D30 ones? They look very similar.

clunking in the steering that needs to go

Did you do an alignment after putting on the bigger tires? It's probably not much, but it will need an adjustment. -

I'd watch under the front and have someone else turn the wheel back and forth. If you don't see anything loose under there, take a look through the top and watch the steering shaft and pitman while they turn, that should show you if there's anything wrong in the box itself. -
Growing up all the Jeeps were referred to by their years. The only doubles we have now are at least a different color, and they're the only two Comanches, so that makes it easier. They definitely have their own personalities, and seems like most are referred to female. I know my 2.5 would be, because it certainly has PMS. Runs like crap for a few days every couple of weeks. Still don't know why. I would never trade them in though.

Transfer case linkage Question
Geonovast replied to robfg67's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I know what ya mean, I'm gonna be watching for the fix, since I'll be putting a 242 in the XJ soon. I don't mind having to go back and forth or driving on slippery stuff in 2wd, but I would much prefer the AWD option for the GF.
