Experiences w/ Non MJ/XJ owners?

What kind of interactions do yall get with other Jeep owners? I’ve personally felt quite alienated from the ‘greater Jeep community’. The only conversations I’ve had and compliments at gas stations etc. have exclusively been from non-Jeepers and old dudes.

Maybe the demographic in College Station just doesn’t even know what an MJ is. Just another old truck on the road. Even XJ and YJ owners seem to give me the cold shoulder, which is odd.

For me here is another old Jeep. Either my XJ or MJ. I go to the local cruise in on Saturdays to show either or off and I get compliments. 
But out and about, my only instance from a Jeep owner was a JK owner who knew what my MJ was. Otherwise it’s just a cold shoulder.

It seems to be that most people either don’t know or don’t care what an MJ is because I’ve had similar experiences. When a person knows what it is, they get excited, but for the most part, nobody cares.

Lots of questions and appreciative conversations at the gas station when I'm in the MJ.  Never get a wave when I'm in the XJ or MJ (except from an occasional XJ driver I might see).  I daily my XJ and have accumulated (1) duck while at the grocery store one Sunday morning.   

 

I see more women driving JK/JL's and young guys in Gladiators with 35's.  Get no love from either.  Ask me if I care.

 

Most Grand Cherokee and late model Cherokee owners are oblivious.

I think this sums up the MJ life just perfectly, barring that one occasional MJ guy you meet every few years at a convenience store when you're just trying to buy a cup of coffee, and then you end up talking for like 2 hours and at the end you can't even remember the guy's name, but you know damn well every detail about his truck, his dog, his ex-wife, and the spare parts that he's definitely gonna sell you for a super good deal, except you never even got his number, and you're probably never going to see him again, but hey, that guy was a great guy! Amiright?

I’d love to stumble across an interaction like that. Knowing my luck I’m going to run into an MJ the one day I’m not driving mine.

Most new Jeep people (JK owners) like to eat snickers with the veiny part down......I'm fine being excluded from that club. And f their ducks.

The difference in attention is interesting. My Jk has all the waves and ducks - personally I'm not interested in any of it. When I'm playing or cruising in the MJs though its the folks who know what it is that seem to appreciate it. Otherwise its similar to most - oblivious. Whats more surprising to me is how many folks think the only jeep pickup they ever made is the jk-gladiator.

I don't know, I'm pretty sure that the MJ gets more attention than even my 69 Nova. New Jeep owners that you meet on the trail seem to dig it. In contrast, most new Jeep owners that you meet in town that just use their Jeeps for transportation, probably don't even recognize it as a Jeep. 

I've once overheard someone saying "they turned that Cherokee into a truck". My alignment guy said that multiple people thought it was an old Toyota when it was there. 🙄

I haven’t taken my MJ out much since it’s been in and out of shops and my garage. But the mechanics who have seen it always comment on how cool it is. As a random aside, at my local CDJR dealership one of salesmen made a comment on how cool it was that I was restoring one. I find they’re obscure enough that the average person doesn’t know what it is.

I had a group of kids buy an old VW rabbit off me, the trail MJ was in the garage next to it and when I opened the door there was a sudden "Hey man Nice Taco!".

 

I quickly corrected him "Hey man its not a Taco"

 

Kid scoffed at me in doubt even after informing him it was in fact a Comanche. Young and I know what I know attitude.

I primarily drive older cool vehicles.  My Comanche gets considerably more attention than the others.   The attention is mostly from random strangers but there is the occasional Jeep owner that's into it.  I once had a CJ just stop in traffic to stare at my MJ, and another time had a guy hang out of the back window of a newer Cherokee to give me a thumbs up and yell how awesome it was on a 70 mph highway.  Its gets a ton of attention at the hardware and farm stores.

owning a JK/JL does not automatically lead to any interest in older iron.  they are into JK/JLs because that is what is cool to them.  but people into old iron will flock to old iron, usually regardless of brand.  old stuff is cool to people that think old stuff is cool.

Ok speaking of JKs and JLs. Wife and I were in the eagle and the driver pointed to us while trying to get his wife to look at what we were driving. @89 MJ, you are damn right about these cars just getting attention.

I completely agree my Eagle gets more attention than my Comanche does. I only get waves from other XJ owners in my Comanche but I will get waves and comments on my Eagle from just about everyone.
