New DIY projects forum

Recommended Posts

As some of you may have noticed, there is a new forum at the bottom of the main page. But it is locked. Why you ask? Because I'll be adding in completed writeups that include lots of pictures. I ain't doing all the work though. This is for you guys/gals. Here are my thoughts for making it happen:

Step 1: Feel free to post up suggestions right here (you should probably do that even if you're going to take it on yourself).

Step 2: Someone needs to step up and volunteer. Lots and lots of pictures and instructions are required so that even a novice can see what's going on.

Step 3: I will then post that up in the Tech section both to put it into the searchable database and to give the club at large an opportunity to comment or add in suggestions or variations. As similar as all MJs are, there are differences an individual owner may not realize and so I'd like to get all those thoughts together before I put it into a non-respondable forum.

Step 4: After the vetting is over, I'll copy/paste the project and add it to the DIY forum.

I'd like to see if I can host all the photos from a single hosting site, so each member will need to email me all their photos at full resolution and I'll crop/shrink them as needed (but don't send them until I'm ready to post up the final version to the DIY forum). I think I might start a new picturetrail account just to handle this. We'll see.

Sound good?

I just took the coils out of my MJ and will be doing a 9" SOA swap in the rear this weekend if my parts get here. I already have my frontend pulled apart but I can mock it back up and take pictures. I'm doing extended brakelines also and can get pictures of that unless ya'll think that is too simple to make a how-to.

Sounds like a good plan. I can make some write-ups for the DIY section.

Some write-ups will be simple DIY bolt on types.

Other will require a certain skill level that can be written for novice but will require a very detailed write-up for a novice to do.

Some projects are of an advanced level that would be very difficult to write-up for a complete novice to do.

Maybe there could be a few different skill level ratings for DIY write-ups.

Some projects require you to have proper welding skills which should be a higher level skill rating.

Some things are total custom fabrication which will depend on your lift, axles and other variables to properly build it for your rig. This would be the most advanced type of DIY write-up and would be next to impossible to write at a novice level.

I believe there should be a skill level rating of something like 1-5 and the DIY project be written for the people that are capable of each skill level.

In my head I see it containing smaller projects. Not necessarily simple, but projects that are concise and contained that don't go on for pages and pages like an engine swap would. And I'm not certain if we need to cover things that a Haynes manual would have, although I've gotten frustrated with the Haynes or even my FSM when working on stuff so maybe that's futile to try and avoid. After all, who knows how to swap a fuel filter better than those of us that have done it a half-dozen times.

So maybe we should put it this way: there are no set limitations on what can be covered, anything from installing a radiator, to installing an interior overhead light, to changing a fuel pump, to bobbing a bed, to a 4x4 conversion. As long as it's a single project. If you're doing something that's close to a straight 4x2 to 4x4 conversion, that's awesome. But you won't find my 88's "conversion" in there since it's made up of like 50 individual projects (although you might find some of them eventually).

And yeah, we'll probably need to get a difficulty rating system in there. :brows: Maybe:

1- common tools, novice skills.

3- less common tools, some mechanical experience would be nice.

5- Expensive tools, you'd better know what you're doing.

Being a complete novice I think this is a fantastic idea. I betcha between all the members in this furum we can come up with a complete rebuild manual. From experience though I gotta tell you that it would be great if when we did this it would be word for word with pictures for idiots like me. The only thing I ever did to a car myself was change the oil until I bought this truck. After three months now I've changed my plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, O2 sensor, TPS sensor, master cylinder, front u-joints, brake pads, calipers, brake lines. I've rewired evry single harness to the truck and completely exchanged dash and cluster from an xj to my mj. I couldn't have done any of this without the help of the members on this forum. No mechanic in my area would even take a look at my truck. The jeep dealer even laughed when I told them what I had. They were absolutely no help. I'll definetly pitch in my part by doing a write-up with every thing I have left to do. Up next, CPS and MAp sensor.

I already did the CAD fix on my 91 and took pics the entire time. I already added this to my project but I will be more then willing to rewrite it for a write-up in this section. I have also done 2 custom headliners and will be doing a third for my 91, it would be for everyone who has no backer board. I could take pics and do a writeup for it too. And once I rip my carpet up and redo my floorboards then the custom washable floor goes in I can turn that into one too.

Oh, and please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, can everyone take some decent photos? Make sure there's plenty of light and hold the camera steady. And take them on the highest resolution you can. You don't need to give us the biggest photos in the world, but I'd like to see if I can host all of the photos for every project so that means I'd want you all to eventually email me the top quality versions of each photo and I'll shrink them as needed. I'll alter the original post to reflect that.

Since my build will have a ton of things happening at the same time I will make seperate files and write-ups for each part the best I can.

It will be everything from HP D44 front axle swap, a 9" rear axle swap, a 4.0 HO / auto swap, the fender cutting, long door cab using 2dr XJ doors, bob the bed, shorten the front of the box, a complete '95 R-134 A/C swap, power window, door lock, mirror swap, relocating shackles into the frame rails, frame plating, weld in rock rails, an exo cage, and much more.

Are 5.1 meg pics good enough? I have just been using e-mail size so far.

Good stuff Pete. I can contribute with a lot of "creature comfort" mods, like power windows, power mirrors, power seat(s), power rear slider, lighting upgrades, cruise install, etc. Don't know the interest in these mods, but I have saved the procedure pics, and schematics. Be glad to help out if you'd like.

Any and all projects are welcome. :D

Anything above 3 megs is good for our usage. The bigger the better so there's plenty of room to crop and zoom if needed. What I fear most are dark or blurry photos. At least these days the digital cameras allow for instant review. I had only film cameras back when I did the initial buildup of my 88 back in the day. That's why there are so few photos in my early albums (like installing the TJ driveline and adapting the Bronco axles) and plenty of the photos I did have are iffy. Technology is awesome. :D

Dirty just sent me a writeup so we'll use his as the guinea pig to see if my process plan will work.

Lead', you may as well list the stuff you have here. The project titles at least, not the whole shi-bang. After I work out the best way to do this, you'll likely be posting them one at a time in the tech section before you need to send me anything. I want to give the group a chance to comment on them or ask questions before I get too involved with any potential editing.

One of the Audi forums I'm on has the titles set-up with the area it pertains to first, and it's nice:

(Suspension) Installing coil-overs

(Exterior) Clear corner lenses

(Electronics) One-touch rear windows

(Exterior) Painting lower molding

Makes things quick for me to find, and if I'm only, say, working on my exterior appearance, I can tell which ones would apply to me easily.
