jpnjake
Lately I’ve been taking after my father jpnjim and learning all I can about Comanches, I’ve been to this forum multiple times over the past few years and just recently decided to join and post. If you are not familiar with this truck I’ll tell you about it. Its a 1989 pioneer short bed 2wd and column shift auto and the bulletproof 4.0 it is a manual window, no ac, low option low mileage truck currently having about 53k miles. The interior is nearly perfect and the exterior just needs a little work to be spot on. It’s a great truck. My dad had put on 97+ mirrors, a bed liner, and a tonneau cover along with the non idiot light gauge pack. Also adding a metric ton leaf setup in the back and some sagged 3” coils on the front and some 29” snow tires to make it movable in the snow up here. I proceeded to sometime around last year bring the truck out of its parking spot where it was for a few years, and get it ready for when I got my license. I washed, polished, and cleaned it up just in time to get my license. And recently I’ve started modifying by removing the bed liner and putting on the oldstyle mirrors along with painting the inside of the bed. Below I’ll post some before and after shots. jpnjake
By no means is it a great paint job, but it’s better than it was and will get me until I learn how to paint good in the summer

jpnjake
Just put a cb in the truck yesterday, worked great out by the highway. But I still need to tune it. Mounted the cb antenna right behind the passengers cab corner on the bed and cut the cb into the heater under the dash as I had a spare
jpnjake
Just put on my summer wheels and tires. I also put in a fire extinguisher just in case on the passenger side. This weekend I'm going to dig out the bed toolboxes and pick either a drivers side box or the middle box. I am also in the process of polishing the tail gait protector.update with more pictures when the box is on and the protector is finished. as you can see i also need to paint my roof and get a door that isn't dented. jpnjake
I just started experimenting with grilles to decide on a chrome one so far the contenders are 84-87 87-89 and the wacky one 1997-2001 I’ve never seen anyone put the modern grille on a 84-96 without the rest of the grill so I experimented by taking the one off my xj and trying them on the mj it is too small in one dimension and too tall in the other. I didn’t know they changed the grille so much for the new one
Pete M
they changes a lot of things in 91, but kept the overall feel. in 97 they did a complete redesign. apparently right down to the grille dimensions. good to know.

jpnjake
A Little while back I Decided I was sick of all the tools and spare parts being jammed behind the seat and I decided to put on a toolbox. I started looking online at school one day and when I came home I was Reminded That we already had some Weatherguard box's. I decided on the side mount box and mounted it up in the MJ without drilling any holes. The toolbox sits behind the divers side and is very easily accessible. and as for the stability of it, You can use the toolbox as a seat when its closed with the non bolted in brackets we made to securely hold it. In all its the upgrade I always needed as i have plenty of room behind the seat again. Ill add some pictures of the brackets and the inside organization of the box soon. jpnjake
Quick update. Yesterday I was washing The MJ and discovered some paint marks where a White vehicle traded paint with me. I ended up compound and polishing the drivers side bed, cab corner, and door as that was where the paint was. Ill end up polishing the rest of the truck sometime this week as the polished panels are significantly shinier. as usual you can't tell the difference much in the picture but its much more noticeable in the sun. Pete M
stand closer to snap the pic. rotate the phone and fill the frame with the truck. it's a dark color and the camera can't capture it when there's so much bright sky and ground in the frame. jpnjake
Went through gauge packs a few weeks ago to get a tach. Started with the 3/4 pack w/o tach and tried to put in the 87 only full pack but the gas gauge wasn’t working on that one so I ended up going with the more common red one but I swapped on the black bezel to match the rest. The only thing missing from the pack now is a shift indicator I haven’t cut in yet
jpnjake
Got some more chrome on the truck Friday with the door handles and mirrors. when i took the door handle off on the passenger side i confirmed my suspicion of a new passenger door as under the handles the door was burgundy. The combo really go together with the bumper, toolbox, and wheels. at this rate I'm gonna need to come up with a new thread name, it gets less grandpa by the day. but until i think of a better name it stays.
