Dishwashers

What does everybody use/recommend for a dishwasher? Ours is on its way out. There are 4 of us in the house. And before you get any funny ideas, no, my mother does not want to be the dishwasher, nor does she want my brother or I to do it, she wants a legit dishwasher. Thanks!

But I can say knock on wood our maytag has been good, I believe the brand to stay away from is lg

We installed a GE one with stainless interior a couple years ago (along with matching fridge, stove and microwave/exhaust).  It was a middle-of-the-road unit pricewise, and we haven't had a single problem with it so far.  Darn thing is so quiet you have to actually look at the digital display to make sure it's running.  The tradeoff to the quietness, regardless of brand, is excessive run times.  Even the "quickest" wash setting, which we use and pop the door open to air dry (when we remember to LOL) is like 90 minutes.  Not a problem for us since there's only 2 of us, but those extended run cycles could be an issue for a household with a larger volume.

For me there are two roads of thought. 

1. Buy super cheap, replace as needed. I actually went this route three times in a row, over the course of 7 years. Finally got tired of R&R the borked one for a new cheap one. Not to mention it wouldn't CLEAN the dishes. If my wife and I didn't rinse off each plate/ glass/ fork/ etc, and arrange them in the trays carefully, they would leave all kinds of messes behind.
2. Pay out the nose upfront, but be satisfied in it lasting. Last one we put in was a Bosch. Works great. Quiet. Actually washes the dishes, so we can just scrape off the big chunks and load it up. Large capacity. Feels of quality. Going on two years now and very happy with it. 

The older I get, the more likely I am to drop big bucks on quality upfront to avoid the headache and frustration of crappy tools/ components down the road. And by and large (generalizing here) if a company offers a product for $$$ compared to other companies they usually stand behind it if you have problems. And the warranties tend to extend much further into the future.  YMMV.

 

Oh, last comment from me. For big purchases (like a dishwasher) if the product is sold at box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, etc . . . .run. Run far away and hide. Find a local store where the owner both sells units AND REPAIRS THEM. He will get you the good quality ones if you ask. And he knows which ones are most likely to break because he has to go fix them.

I have a GE. It sucks but it is old... Tries to murder me everytime I open it as the door spring is worn out. 

 

It does still work though.

I'm similar to mjeff87, replaced all of our appliances with matching GE appliances about 4 years ago. Our dishwasher will run shorter than that, maybe down to 75 minutes? We never use the heated dry cycle. We are extremely happy, but I am fairly meticulous in rinsing, loading and rearranging what is loaded incorrectly. We moved into this house in 2011, and it had a cheap dishwasher put in. It worked OK, but it was LOUD! We got matching Slate Appliances, my wife refused to get stainless because she had seen too many with fingerprints all over the front. With grandkids living in the house, it was the right choice for us.

we have a stainless Bosch.  it's so quiet that it has a little light that shines on the floor to tell you it's running.

Fyi a Kenmore Elite is the exact same thing as a Bosch. Built on the same assembly in the plant in my home town. Only difference is the badging.

That’s great advice! I didn’t think about getting one from a smaller store.

I forgot to mention, like JEEP says...all of our white goods purchases have been from a local Indy appliance store, not a big box place.  Yeah, you might pay a couple but more, but it's worth it.
