halnelmar Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 does anyone know the axle ratio for this truck? cannot find the info for the v6 anywhere
Green Mesa XJ Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 1984-85 v6 5 speed 4x4 had 3.73. Not sure if it continued in to 1986 when Chrysler started to become a factor. I think it may have been 3.55 in 1986 for the v6, and 4.10 for the 4cylSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Pete M Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 it could be anything. they hadn't yet standardized the ratios for each drivetrain combo. easiest way is to jack up one rear tire, put it in neutral, and spin the tire around exactly twice while counting the number of times the driveshaft spins. 3 and a half is 3.55, a tic over 4 is 4.10, etc.
dasbulliwagen Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 My 86 V6 4x4 with a 5 speed had 4:10's. Those axles and trans got put into my 87. I also have an 86 XJ Waggy V6 4x4 NP229 auto, but I don't know what gears are in it yet.
Eagle Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 I have a hulk of an '86 XJ V6 auto. It has 3.73 gears.
DirtyComanche Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 I'd look for the tag(s), or spin it as Pete suggested.
yxmj Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 Why Guess.....drop the cover....read the stamped numbers....replace the cover and top up with new diff lube....that way you are 100% positive of what the ratio is ....and you gave the truck some new lube ( that was probably needed anyway)

And while you're in there check the condition of the R & P, check to see if it's Posi or not, etc. Good to know info.
omega_rugal Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 is it a dana 35? what if you have a amc 20
Pete M Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 if you are lucky to have an amc-20, they should be 4.10s

Pete M Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 well, 20 years ago some random guy stopped by the house one day while I was puttering with my MJ and asked if I wanted to buy his for a dirt cheap. turned out to be a metric ton 86 with the AMC-20.

I can't believe that this didn't generate a "you suck!" comment. I mean...I know we're nice guys and all, but still.
HOrnbrod Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Hey Pete - you suck. There - someone generated it. happy now? I searched HARD for years and years for an MJ AMC-20 rear so I could junk my POS c-clip D35 - couldn't find. I had to settle for an MJ D44 finally, but I still want an AMC-20 just because of it's uniqueness. And I'm still looking...

Well, according to the internet...I will replace my 4.10 geared AMC 20 for an 8.8, so I think it will be up for grabs...
Pete M Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 the CJ version had 2-piece axles that liked to fail at the connections and that gives them a bad wrap. MJs have one-piece shafts.
