Locking Handle for Tailgate

Recommended Posts

Been searching for an aftermarket adapter to secure my tailgate release handle by key.

Anyone know of a manufacturer (looking for a link or product number) that fits an MJ?

Here's one made by Pop & Lock that does not apparently fit, but it's pretty much what I'm looking for.

Open to other solutions, too

Thanks, man. Definitely plan to get one of these as well to prevent tailgate theft.

The handle lock is so that I can keep my bed contents secured with a rolling tonneau cover

Until you get a regulation lock, throw a radiator hose clamp on it. Most tailgate thieves won't risk the time it takes to remove it.

I wonder how hard it would be to use a toolbox or similar style lock by just drilling a hole in the handle and making a slot below. I figure if you do it right it could look pretty clean and would prevent the tailgate handle from being raised when engaged. Maybe I'll put this on the list of mods to try. Of course I'm gonna want a spare handle so if it won't work I can put the old one back on.

Anyone know (off the top of their head since my MJs at home and I'm at work) how much clearance there is behind the handle?

Geez - tailgate thieves? Never heard of this. What is the incentive? For thrills?

I hadn't either until I bought my MJ!   I immediately bought the tailgate lock below ... before someone got a chance to turn it into a bench like the one below.

historically my go-to technique seems to be to just have a tailgate that doesn't work. :roflmao:  can't steal it if you can get it to open :D   but after the MJ trailer is all fixed up, I think I'm going to get that pivot lock and some anti-theft screws for the taillights.  :L:

I use this one too. And have the same problem with that dinky rubber flap not staying closed.

Ha Ha.   Funny you say that.   My flap didn't work right from the minute I took it out of the package.   I have an Excel maintenance chart for each of my vehicles.   On my MJ chart there is a line that reminds me to give that lock a squirt of rustproofing oil at every service interval.

They resell them.  It's super easy to steal them, and they can get $50-200 a pop for them depending what they are.

If you see a CL ad with multiple tailgates in it, phone and ask for one they don't have listed...  See if they say "I"ll have one for you by the weekend" - they're probably stealing them.

Bringing this thread back because it never seems the OP was answered. Anyone actually done a handle lock mod? I know of the electronic mod, but interested in a keyed solution. Just threw my shell back on and plan on camping a bit this summer. Hoping to secure the contents of the bed.

Somebody definitely has.  Not sure if I saw the pictures on here or ZuckerbergBook.
