A good loud exhaust

Recommended Posts

Nobody really wants to hear your loud exhaust, and you'll be turning the wrong heads for the wrong reasons. With that said, if you're set on annoying everyone with a loud exhaust, Gibson is probably the best you can do.

Now that I'm bordering on curmudgeon I don't like loud exhaust on vehicles. They are deafening when I'm walking my dogs, annoying when I'm driving with my windows down to enjoy the weather and cannot hear my radio any more because the guy next to me has a loud exhaust. But that being said I did want something a little throatier when I was building my XJ and opted for a dynomax. I don't know if they even make them, but it's always had a nice little growl to it, but not so much that I can't hear my radio and I don't feel its obnoxious.

To the OP, less is more, a little growl is sometimes far more interesting than an outright screaming exhaust. Just my .02 but hey, so long as it's legal in your state do what you want. Here in VA its actually illegal to modify your exhaust to make it louder. Of course they don't really enforce it as far as I can tell....

I like a loud exhaust, but for daily use, it just gets annoying. This coming from a guy who used to run open megaphone header exhaust on air cooled VW's. I have a Flowmaster 50 series on my 2.5 with a gutted and sleeved cat. Almost quiet idle, but a nice growl under load. Loud enough to notice, but not loud enough to annoy.

I don't like loud exhausts either!  Totally pointless to me.  Why draw unwanted attention (like cops pulling you over) just because you feel the "need" to be loud and in everybody's face?

Because the OP's a kid. I did the same back in the day, as most of us "older" guys did when they were young. It's part of the learning process. OP, I say go for it with your 2.5. Once you hear how ridiculous it sounds you'll soon grow out of it.

This.  Other than he said he's swapping in a 4.0 I guess.

I remember running around with open header(s) on stuff and thinking it was great.

I'd say just start with a cheap glasspack, a Red Hot is like $25 or so.  When it gets annoying move up to something slightly more expensive, like a $35 multi chamber muffler; I have Raptors on my plow truck.  Don't throw that original glasspack away though, keep it to throw back in WITH the other muffler when you get annoyed again.

Yes, I remember doing a few things as part of the learning process.

Recall the first time I pulled a cylinder head with 2 of my 17 year old cousins.  None of us bothered to drain the radiator before we unbolted the cylinder head.  We all wondered where that water was coming from when we lifted the head.

I have not done the EGR delete. I havent had to yet, but when I do a rebuild it will be going away.

I'm doing it on mine. And I am not sure how the new header and midpipe will affect the sound of the exhaust
