DirtyComanche Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 I think I'd be wise to replace my front bumpstops and add a little length to them. Is there much difference between any of the ones out there? I've found the Rubicon Express RE1396 and the Daystar KJ09101BK, they look basically the same. Any other brands? Any issues with installing them, or having them fall out after install? Should I just use a hockey puck?
Pete M Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 I've heard the hockey puck can work. myself, I welded extensions to the stock ones (though I had to angle them out a bit too in order the accommodate the ford perches)
DirtyComanche Posted June 3, 2017 Author Posted June 3, 2017 I used hockey pucks on my XJ, so I know it can work. I was just trying to be 'more right.' I could even just weld a taller pad onto the perch on the axle.
wheelsaz08 Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 i used the daystar's on my 96 xj and 89 mj. fit very tight in the cup and havent ever had one fall out

cody4359 Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 I forget who makes mine. I thought daystar did but I couldn't find them. They just go inside the coil spring. I afe some mounts but never put them in Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

Some of this stuff is a little hard to source in Canada for a decent price, and I can get the later style ones a lot cheaper. Do you like the Prothane progressive bumps? I'd debated trying to find a Timbren product that would work, or some other progressive products and adapting it.
Crash Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 I do like the prothanes better, as they are a progressive stop vs stock replacement. A little more Money but worth it, IMO.
Swampy Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 I was looking at bumpstops for the front of my mj. I saw some that just pop in place of the stock ones but they had 2 different diameters. One was 1.5 inches, the other was 2 inches. How do I know which one to order. I also checked those progressive ones.. they look good
MeanLemons Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 There’s two different diameters to watch out for. Some had 1.25” diameter and the rest had 1.5” diameter
HOrnbrod Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 BUMP STOPS OLD TYPE NEW TYPE How do the new type mount? Have no experience with them. And what are the progressive bump stops?
MeanLemons Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 New type is simply inserted in the metal tube. Basically compressed while being inserted and then expand once fully seated.
HOrnbrod Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 Thanks Mean. So not interchangeable. I have the old screw-ins and would like to extend them an inch or so. Are there ready-made longer screw-in bump stops available?
DesertRat1991 Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 I also have the screw in type and need a longer set. Does anyone know if the MJ uses the same OEM scew-in bumpstop as the TJ? If so, these *might* work: 1997-2006 TJ Extended Bumpstop - Daystar
coolwind57 Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 This is next on my parts dream list once I can budget them. Mine's a 89, and I think I have the old type. Watching this tread intensely.
HOrnbrod Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 I was just looking at those when you posted. If the thread is the same they would... You would think someone would make these for the early front XJ/MJ rigs........ I suppose I could shim them an inch somehow like I did for the rears:
Pete M Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 adding a hockey puck into the bottom of the spring is a common method of bumpstop "extension".
HOrnbrod Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 Yeah, but I also want to do like Dirty says, a little "more right" by using a longer screw-in stop. Surprised nobody ever made these...
MeanLemons Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 I know they make extended bumpstops for the newer styles. No idea if they make it for the older style.
DirtyComanche Posted December 18, 2017 Author Posted December 18, 2017 The problem with the hockey puck is attaching it suitably. I bolted them in on my XJ, but it has totally different coil buckets since it's a Ford axle, I added a captive nut when I put the brackets on for that purpose. I didn't want to use hockey pucks, but I had them and I needed to do something as 37" tires and 3" of lift is a terrible idea without suitable bumpstops. I don't know if it would be easy to bolt something through the stock lower coil buckets. Next time rather than a hockey puck I would just buy some round stock and cut it to the length I wanted, drill through it, countersink/counterbore it, and bolt it on. It's not like you're getting any awesome compressional cushioning properties out of the hockey puck anyways. I never got back to doing anything about this on my MJ. So I'm curious if there is a solution. I need 2" or so more bumpstop than I have, leaving the swaybar on is all that stops me from really mangling things.
crumbscomanche Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 I bought the Daystar rubber bump stops for the 97-01 and it fit fine @DirtyComanche

Anyone have a stock XJ/MJ front screw-in bump stop laying around to measure the threads?

Might be able to drill out and tap the inserts over to the larger SAE size.
