To Cruiser54 - tell your friend thank you from me. That exposition stated clearly most, if not all, of the thoughts that have gone through my mind during the past eight years.

Gogmorgo - I'm assuming you developed your characterization of Donald Trump and his policies from mainstream media, whose bias toward the Democratic candidate was so obvious it was a continuing theme in European political commentary cartoons. In fact, the bulk of your first sentence sounds like it was taken directly from a Hillary Clinton speech (with the exception that you left out Islamophobic). I've watched a lot of Trump's press conferences, rallies and speeches and have yet to hear him advocate violence against anyone except Islamic terrorists. He certainly has strongly advocated prosecution of certain people or groups of people because of their criminal activity, not their ethnicity. What, you ask, about his stance on illegal aliens and the wall? Ask yourself what Canada's policy is about the issue of illegal immigration. Donald Trump, and the majority of US citizens, welcome all immigrants who enter the country legally, work toward citizenship and live peacefully with their neighbors.

Ask yourself if you saw any reports of demonstrations or rioting when Obama was elected to his first and second terms. Did you see any media coverage of groups of Republicans marching in the streets, fighting with police and vandalizing personal and public property? Why not? Because, in spite of your un-deserved and unwelcome characterization of US conservative voters, we live by the law of the land and don't throw temper tantrums when we don't get our way.

We in the the US have lived for almost eight years under an administration and political party that has deliberately fostered racial discord, class warfare, unconstitutional policies, and governmental persecution via the IRS of individuals and groups whose personal beliefs clashed with the social engineering and political correctness of the Obama administration All of which was done to push the nation toward socialism. And, if any objected to any of the regal decrees and unconstitutionally supported Presidential orders, they were immediately pilloried and labeled with the whole string of invective spewed out in your opening statement.

So, if you want to criticize someone for creating an atmosphere of pent up frustrationracial tension, and a demand for social change, look at the Socialist Demcrat Party that just lost the election.

I totally agree. BTW, that's me on the far left...

Stop the California bashing, people in Texas have wanted to leave the Union from the day it became a state, there are all kinds in all states.

Hey, flatslug87,

I am with you on the California bashing.  I see it all over the internet from people in other parts of the country who use all kind of pejoritive words.

You have to remember that long before the Gold Rush, California has been a place a huge number of people all over the world have aspired to get to... My parents followed the California dream in the very early 1950's from Scotland.  A long time friend traces her family dream back to a Pio Pico land grant in the 1820's.  (Pio Pico was the last Spanish Govenor of California). My kids can trance their ancestory  on their mothers side directly back to a man who arrived in New France in 1691. His decentants are all over the U.S. and Canada.   How many of us have ever been  been able to attend a 300th wedding anniversary celebration?  Even the first maps of California in the 16th century (yes, the 1500's) were of a paradise off the west coast of the new world.

This brings out envy in some people.  California is the Golden State for so many more reasons that just the 1849 Gold Rush.  California is the the place many people all over the world want to be.  When was the last time you heard somebody who wants to go to Cleveland, Pennsylvania or North Dakaota? soI just got back from 5 week in southern europe and the Mediteranian. When people heard I was from California there was a much different reaction than when they heard Anita was from Montreal and Cleveland.  It was "Wow, California, I have a cousin there, I wish I coud be there.

California is both economically and culturally the richest, most vibrant state in the country.  It simply brings out the envy in some people.

Even the Austraiian  we met undrstood the Californa dream.  They compared Australia  to California. Not better, but very much the same.

It's funny, I know a family that recently retired and moved to North Dakota.  They love it.  I've visited PA several times and enjoyed myself.  I've gone to Ohio many times, primarily for the National Rifle and Pistol Championships held at Camp Perry, Ohio (near Port Clinton).  No complaints.

I've never lived in CA, but I've traveled there several times and know many people who have lived there, almost all active duty Marines.  Some like it, others hate it.  Yep, hate is the word he and his wife use.  CA would be a last choice for me as a place to live, along with New York and New Jersey, or anywhere with restrictive gun laws.  I support and defend the Constitution and it's amendments (all of them, including the 2nd).

I am impressed with the members of CC. On most forums, a political discussion with a wide array of views as presented here would have plunged down the hateful name calling drain :)

I think the election would have had a totally different outcome of it was Trump and Bernie on the ticket. Regardless, I am comfortable with the results and look forward to a prosperous few years.

I didn't vote for either candidate. I checked the Johnson box. Sure he was a little crazy, but I was really hoping the popular vote this year, would give a 3rd party candidate a chance in 4 years. I knew my vote wasn't against Trump since I was 100% confident Kansas was going red, regardless of my vote.

In other news, I was curious about Canada's immigration policy. I filled out the questionnaire and it seems I am not welcome to become a citizen.... apparently my language skills are not up to par.

I agree. It's been a meaningful discussion (not argument) overall and I've learned a few things which is always good. Most everyone expressed their opinions with tact and candor without offending others. We now have an incumbent pres taking office soon unlike anything this country has experienced before. Who knows how it will work out, but I think everyone agrees that we needed a change in leadership and domestic and foreign policy. There are enough checks and balances built into our system of government to keep things stable without getting out of hand. I'm looking forward to sticking around and seeing how this political change works; not even thinking about going to Canada or Australia. Been there - done that many many times. And I do love Cali, especially when their college football teams play Bama. All easy wins.

California bashing? Not me! I really enjoyed my visits there (San Francisco and San Diego) and would like to return to Coronado for a week or so. However, wouldn't want to live there, or NYC, or Chicago, and a few others. I'm a Southern boy through and through and love Sweet Home Alabama! And I feel sure all you other folks love your home states as well.

I live in California East - The Peoples Republic of Maryland.  I am a born-and-raised Marylander.  I have visited other states - mostly east of the Mississippi - but never lived in any of them.

One day, I will proudly say "I am FROM Maryland."

I was in CA this summer. Saw a pretty good chunk of it, down 101 from Oregon to Monterey, up past Sacramento towards Reno, then back across from Vegas to Santa Cruz via Death Valley, Bakersfield, Big Sur. Then back up past Sacramento towards Bend, OR. beautiful place for a visit, but way too hot to live there, can't understand how anyone could put up with it.
