terrawombat
Mine is 1986 - not because it was the first model year that the MJ was sold, but because you have a better chance of finding the more desirable options in that particular model year (i.e. bucket seats, center console, power windows/door locks). It almost seems as though AMC/Jeep manufactured more "high-end" MJ models to promote the new truck, but then reverted back to mostly base trucks in subsequent years. 1987 is a close second since that year was the first for the Laredo model. What is your favorite model year? That doesn't necessarily mean it's the best model year, although depending on how you rate vehicles, favorite and best may be one in the same to you. 91Pioneer
91/92 due to smoother running, easier starting and more reliable. In my experience anyway.
Minuit
'92. All the benefits of the '91 improvements without the occasional '91 weirdness (like using Renix gauge senders) MJs truly did improve every year, which can't really be said for other Jeep models. Keyav8r
91 - because of the previously mentioned improvements and because that's what I have! Used to be 88 (because that's the first one I had). Regardless of the year, I believe that no matter how "finished" your Comanche is there's always something that needs (or you want) to be done to it. And then another something after that. FrankTheDog
92 for the interchangeability with 92-01 drivetrain parts. 91 has a smaller pilot diameter on the input shaft. Although you can easily swap in a 92-99 drivetrain in place of the 91 4.0 HO.
Pete M
they are like legos. the interchangeability built into the design means any year can be made to have any engine from any XJ with very little work (except for the 86 engine bay issues of course). the shape of the body is all that matter to me. :D (insert way-too-easy sexist joke here)

Minuit
I agree, but why not start with the best kit and build from there?

Guest
'87; partially due to bias and because mine was one of the last true "AMC Built" trucks to roll out of Toledo. . :MJ 1: . Not to mention that 1987 was the last year for the J10's. Infinite sadness. :(

Not to hijack, but how do you like that rear suspension setup? How much lift do you think it amounts to? Pics?It amounts to an inch or so more than a metric ton leaf pack. I mainly built it for load capacity.Although I don't think it has quite as much capacity as the MT packs. Although it's a little sketchy because of the light duty 2wd main leaves. But it suits my purpose and I've been running them like that for almost 5 years. Doesn't ride to bad either.
