1997 cherokee windshield in a comanche?

Recommended Posts

Yes it will. The earlier windshields had the trim that went around the windshield as to where the later ones had a rubber gasket . If you go with the newer windshield make sure you use the rubber gasket as well . And I believe the rear view mirror tab is different so you'll have to use the newer mirror.

The 97+ windshield and gasket will fit without issue, as long as the installer gets it centered. If the windshield is not centered, the gasket will not fit around the existing trim tabs/nubs found on MJs. My glass installer had no issue installing a windshield and gasket intended for a 99 XJ into my 92 MJ.

Does anybody know if you can buy just the 97+ "gasket/trim" anywhere? When I had my new windshield installed they used a rubber piece but it was massive. Like 1.5" wide or more (the original is about 1") and it looked horrible. My windshield isn't any good any more so I was wondering if I could find the right rubber trim I'd give it to the glass company when they install my new glass.

Local auto Glass shop , they should have both types of gaskets .

It will work.... it has been done.... the glass shop ( if competent ) should be able to get the right gasket.

This one...taken from a late model XJ...by me... had local installer (used by my work) install.  No issues.... ( truck has since been sold).

The corners looked a little funky at first...but once it heated up good they looked better.  GO FOR IT!

I too have the 97+ glass and Rubber Trim installed on my 89 and it will work either way...

The main difference is in the Rear view mirror clip so you have a 50/50 shot that your old mirror will slide on as I changed up to the newer mirror (auto tint)

so I didn't care that the old 89 Mirror wouldn't fit anymore...

Y'all got me curious, so I decided to check the factory part numbers. They are NOT all the same -- but there are three different part numbers (excluding differences for tinted and non-tinted) just for the early body style, so a different part number doesn't mean it won't fit -- it may only be a difference in the tint color.

In other words, my research was inconclusive. For whatever it's worth, here it is:

Windshield Part Numbers (By the numbers):

XJ 1984 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted)

XJ 1986 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted)

MJ 1986 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted)

XJ 1987 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted)

MJ 1987 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted)

XJ 1988 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted)

Har, I did the same thing, and am sure it's just differences in tint. When I first got my MJ in 03, one of the first things I did was have the cracked windshield replaced by Safelite. They used a 2001 XJ windshield because I liked the tint and also kept the original chrome moldings and clips.
