dirtyoldjeeper Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I'm new to the group. I'm In the beginning stages of using a 1997 cherokee to fix up a 1986 comanche 2wd. I was wondering if anyone knew if the cherokee windshield would fit the comanche. Thanks for any input.
cruiser54 Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 First off, welcome. Secondly, you stumped me with your first post!!
jimoshel Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 No. Will not fit. Could be made to fit with some extensive body work. Or a roll of duct tape.
Jeep Driver Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 The answer is yes. I already have a quote of $175 local to me with new gasket. I cannot imagine wasting my time and effort on an 18 year old windshield. But........your truck.
Jeep Driver Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 No. Will not fit. Could be made to fit with some extensive body work. Why?
Strokermjcomanche Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Yes it will. The earlier windshields had the trim that went around the windshield as to where the later ones had a rubber gasket . If you go with the newer windshield make sure you use the rubber gasket as well . And I believe the rear view mirror tab is different so you'll have to use the newer mirror.
jimoshel Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 It's been a couple years so my memory is hazy but if I remember right the windshield is both an inch taller and wider with more of a curve to it.
Strokermjcomanche Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 It is a different size Jim , because the rubber holds around the glass vs on the older ones the window is urethaned directly to the metal .
Jeep Driver Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 When I asked the autoglass people here in town and told them what I wanted........he said "no problem......$175 installed".
TheDude Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Most places will charge you damn near the cost of a new windshield to swap an old one. Too much effort removing, cleaning, and reinstalling I guess.
87Warrior Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 The 97+ windshield and gasket will fit without issue, as long as the installer gets it centered. If the windshield is not centered, the gasket will not fit around the existing trim tabs/nubs found on MJs. My glass installer had no issue installing a windshield and gasket intended for a 99 XJ into my 92 MJ.
Dillithium Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I have a 97 and up windshield installed with the rubber gasket.
Eagle Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 The glass shop I deal with also says the glass is the same. In the 97+ XJ, the glass is NOT held in by the gasket. It's glued in, just like the older ones. The rubber "gasket" is just trim.
krustyballer16 Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Does anybody know if you can buy just the 97+ "gasket/trim" anywhere? When I had my new windshield installed they used a rubber piece but it was massive. Like 1.5" wide or more (the original is about 1") and it looked horrible. My windshield isn't any good any more so I was wondering if I could find the right rubber trim I'd give it to the glass company when they install my new glass.
dirtyoldjeeper Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 This is getting interesting. I'm getting answers both ways. I still appreciate the help. I'll measure tonight and see how they compare. Thanks.

Local auto Glass shop , they should have both types of gaskets .
ScottJeep Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 It will work.... it has been done.... the glass shop ( if competent ) should be able to get the right gasket. This one...taken from a late model XJ...by me... had local installer (used by my work) install. No issues.... ( truck has since been sold). The corners looked a little funky at first...but once it heated up good they looked better. GO FOR IT!

Jeepman Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I too have the 97+ glass and Rubber Trim installed on my 89 and it will work either way... The main difference is in the Rear view mirror clip so you have a 50/50 shot that your old mirror will slide on as I changed up to the newer mirror (auto tint) so I didn't care that the old 89 Mirror wouldn't fit anymore...
dirtyoldjeeper Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 The last couple replies sound like good news. My luck I'll probably bust the glass taking it out.
Eagle Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Y'all got me curious, so I decided to check the factory part numbers. They are NOT all the same -- but there are three different part numbers (excluding differences for tinted and non-tinted) just for the early body style, so a different part number doesn't mean it won't fit -- it may only be a difference in the tint color. In other words, my research was inconclusive. For whatever it's worth, here it is: Windshield Part Numbers (By the numbers): XJ 1984 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) XJ 1985 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) XJ 1986 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) MJ 1986 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) XJ 1987 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) MJ 1987 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) XJ 1988 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) MJ 1988 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) XJ 1989 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) MJ 1989 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) XJ 1990 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) MJ 1990 - 5500 0552 (Clear) / 5500 0553 (Tinted) XJ 1991 - 5500 0553 (Tinted) MJ 1991 - 5500 0553 (Tinted) XJ 1992 - 5513 4793 (Tinted) MJ 1992 - 5513 4793 (Tinted) XJ 1993 - 5513 4793 (Tinted) XJ 1994 - 5513 4793 (Tinted) XJ 1995 - 5517 5090 (Tinted) XJ 1996 - 5517 5090 (Tinted) XJ 1997 - 5515 4994 (Tinted) XJ 1998 - 5515 4994 (Tinted) XJ 1999 - 5515 4994 (Tinted) XJ 2000 - 5515 4994AB (Tinted) XJ 2001 - 5515 4994AB (Tinted)
HOrnbrod Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Har, I did the same thing, and am sure it's just differences in tint. When I first got my MJ in 03, one of the first things I did was have the cracked windshield replaced by Safelite. They used a 2001 XJ windshield because I liked the tint and also kept the original chrome moldings and clips..

HOrnbrod Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Most assuredly. I don’t need no steenkin’ rubber.......
